tion m essage that the port is in use along with the nam e of the current DS
user(s). At this point, you m ay request to share access to the port with the cur-
rent DS user(s). The DS users that are currently active will receive a request
to allow sharing. If they confirm , the new DS user will gain access to the port.
When sharing access to a port, all DS users m ay m onitor the port and m ay take
control if no other DS user is currently active.
When you attem pt to connect to a port, the DSView Connection Sharing dialog
box displays. If you select the Stealth Connection checkbox and then click
Share, the DS user that is currently active will not receive notification that
access is being shared and no request to authorize sharing will be m ade.
NOTE: The only way to prevent a stealth connection to a port is by enabling Privacy mode.
Up to 12 DS users m ay share a single port at one tim e. If a 13th DS user
attem pts to connect, an error m essage will inform the DS user that no sessions
are available. Adm inistrators will be given the option of term inating a DS
user session.
At any tim e, DS users m ay select View - List of Shared Users to view a list of
DS users sharing their port or channel. DS users in Stealth m ode are excluded

out, select the Enable checkbox, then enter the desired inactivity period within
the provided field. You m ay also disable this feature by unselecting the
Enable checkbox.
Limiting DS user port information
When a DS user attem pts to select a channel that is in use, DSAdm in will
report who is currently using that channel and offer DS users with adm inis-
trative rights the option to log the current user out. If the Administrators only
box is selected, this m essage will be lim ited to Adm inistrators; DS users with-
out Adm inistrator access will only receive a m essage that the port is in use.
Connection sharing
By default, the DS Managem ent Software is set to prom pt connected users to
allow sharing of their session. When the box m arked Allow Shared Connec-
tions Automatically is checked, sharing will be initiated without
a prom pt.
Automatic creation and deletion of audit logs

To change the default window resolution:
1. From the Node Manager select File - Default Session Window Resolution.
2. Choose your default window size. Choosing None disables this feature.
Once a DS user with a default window size has connected to a port, additional
DS users will have their default displays overridden to m atch the first DS user.
This will prevent the first DS user’s display from being affected.
If the target device’s resolution changes any tim e during a session, the display
will be adjusted autom atically.
Creating and Using Keyboard Macros
Since DSView is running on a PC, certain com m ands m ust be sent to the
controlled target device via keyboard m acros. For exam ple, pressing
Ctrl+Alt+Delete on your keyboard would reset the PC running DSView rather
than resetting the target device. To reset the target device, a m acro is needed.
Your software com es with num erous sequences pre-configured for ease
of operation.
Local and Global Macros
Two kinds of m acros are available:
•
Local Macros - Local m acros are created on the local com puter by select-
ing Tools - Keyboard -Macros in the DSView Client Node Manager window.
Local m acros m ay be custom ized and grouped in any m anner
you wish.
•
Global Macros - Global m acros are created and m aintained by DS users
with Adm inistrator privileges by selecting Options - Keyboard Macros in
the DSAdm in window and are stored on the DSAuth Server. They cannot
be m odified by non-adm inistrative DS users. Global m acros are also
stored on any backup servers that you have specified.
When a session is started, you m ay choose to use either local m acros or global
m acros and switch between using them at any tim e during the session. If you
choose to use local m acros, the m acros stored on the local com puter will be

Adjusting Video Parameters
In som e situations, DS users m ay wish to view several target devices at the
sam e tim e on the sam e screen.
In m ost cases, you will not need to alter the Video Settings from the default.
The system will autom atically adjust and use the optim al video param eters.
DSView perform s best when the video param eters are set such that no (zero)
video packets are transm itted for a static screen.
To automatically adjust video parameters:
You m ay easily adjust your video param eters by clicking on the Auto Adjust
Video button, which instructs the DS/DSR appliance to optim ize the video to
ideal settings.

Modified video settings are written to the target device. Settings are also stored
per port/channel session on a system when they are m ade and saved so they
m ay be used during a non-shared session as follows:
•
If sharing is not enabled, the video settings m ade on the local DS/DSR
appliance during the session are used.
•
If sharing is enabled, video settings are read from the target device.
See Sharing a Device Session in Chapter 3 for m ore inform ation on
session sharing.
Users m ay verify the level of packets per second required to support a static
screen by observing the packet rate which is located in the lower right-hand
corner of the dialog box.
The following sections describe the effects of the video adjustm ents. Clicking
OK after m odifying any adjustm ent saves the changes.
Image position
If DSView and target device m ouse cursors do not align exactly when you select
the Mouse - Align function, video centering m ay be needed using the Im age
Position settings. Generally, only a few increm ents are required.

To m ove the screen to the right, click the Up Arrow on the Left/Right setting.
Clicking the Down Arrow m oves the im age to the left. Sim ilarly, the im age m ay
be m oved up and down. Moving the m ouse into the rem ote session window
will show if the correction is com plete. The point (hot spot) of both DSView
and the target device should be superim posed.
Image clarity
If the im age in the rem ote session window is not clear, select Tools - Video
- Auto Adjust first. This com m and is also available in the Video Adjustm ents
dialog box. In m ost cases, this will correct video problem s. In those cases
where clicking on Auto Adjust several tim es does not clear up a m ottled
screen, adjusting the contrast and brightness m ay help.
First increase the brightness. Do not go m ore that 10 increm ents before
m oving the contrast. Generally the contrast should not be m oved m uch.
When the packet count gets close to zero, refresh the screen. If the packet
count stays at zero, the video adjustm ent is com pleted.
Detection thresholds
In som e cases, noise in the video transm ission keeps the packets/sec count
up. This m ay be seen when little dots change in the area of the cursor when
it is m oved. Varying the threshold values m ay result in “quieter” screens and
im proved cursor tracking.
Noise Threshold and Priority Threshold values m ay be m odified if you are
using standard video com pression. Block Noise Threshold and Pixel Noise
Threshold values m ay be m odified if you are using the DSR DVC upgrade.
Default threshold values can be restored by clicking Auto Adjust Video.

Noise Threshold and Priority Threshold (Standard Video
Compression)
The Noise Threshold and Priority Threshold values set the m inim um levels in
term s of changed pixels per thousand that are allowed without updating the
video block. The thresholds are described below:
•
Raising the Noise Threshold will usually m ake the packets/sec count
decrease. The result will be larger cursor im age artifacts rem aining on the
screen. Decreasing the value will m ake the size of these artifacts sm aller.
•
The Priority Threshold sets the level where a significant change is noted,
such as a new cursor position. Increasing the value will m ake the m ouse
m ovem ents m ore sluggish. The Priority Threshold setting should always
be greater than the Noise Threshold setting, and usually two to three tim es
its value. Setting these thresholds to zero will cause a constant refresh of
the screen, which will m ake cursor tracking very difficult and m ay m ake
it difficult for other network users. The goal is to reduce the packet rate
to zero.
Block Noise Threshold and Pixel Noise Threshold
(DSR DVC Upgrade)
The Block Noise Threshold and Pixel Noise Threshold values set the m inim um
color levels in term s of changed video blocks and pixels per thousand that are
allowed. See Setting the color depth in Chapter 3 for inform ation on changing
the color depth of a rem ote session window. The thresholds are
described below:
•
The Block Noise Threshold sets the m inim um color change that will occur
in a single video block. Increasing the value will reduce the network band-
width. Decreasing the value will m ake the size of these artifacts sm aller.
•
The Pixel Noise Threshold sets the m inim um color change in a single
pixel. Decreasing the value will reduce the number of low-contrast arti-
facts, but will increase network bandwidth.
Image capture
The Width and Fine adjustm ents pertain to how the target video is captured
and digitized and are seldom changed.
The Width param eter is autom atically changed by the Autom atic Adjustm ent
function. A special im age is required on the target in order to m ake accurate
adjustm ents independently.
The Fine setting m ay be adjusted up or down in eight unit increm ents.

If a user wishes to display the host system ’s entire screen, it m ay be scaled to
fit within the current resolution with the scaling tools.
Mouse alignment
Because DSView cannot get constant feedback from the m ouse, there are tim es
when the m ouse on the DS appliance system m ay lose sync with the m ouse on
the host system . When this occurs, users m ay resync the m ouse by clicking on
the Mouse Align button. In m ost cases, this will correct the problem .

Appendix C: Telnet Operations
DSView ships bundled with a built-in proprietary Telnet application that
provides features unavailable in m any other Telnet program s. These features
include configurable session properties tailored for each device, and configu-
rable user preferences for all sessions.
Additionally, DSView Telnet offers a separate history m ode to review session
data, a choice of connection m odes to a DS appliance, a scripting function for
autom atic device login and a logging function for saving session data to a file.
You m ay use DSView Telnet to access any DSView device that supports Telnet
connections, as well as DS appliance ports.
If you do not specify a com m u n ications application for a device, DSView
u ses the DSView Telnet application by defau lt. See the installer/user gu ide
for you r DS appliance for in for m ation about setting and changing the
defau lt application.
DSView Telnet screen
The title bar at the top of the screen displays the nam e of the device to which
you are connected. If you are connected to a port on a device, the title bar dis-
plays the device nam e followed by the port num ber and port nam e.
The status bar at the lower left corner of the screen indicates Connected when
you are operating in norm al term inal em ulation m ode during a Telnet session.
When you are in the history m ode, the status bar indicates ESC to return to
terminal mode. When you are logging, the status bar indicates Logging or Log-
ging Paused as appropriate.
The lower right corner of the status bar contains an icon that, when clicked,
activates the console application, bringing it to the foreground. With this fea-
ture, you m ay access the console tree view without having to close the
Telnet session.
Each toolbar icon has a tooltip that appears when you rest the m ouse pointer on
the icon without clicking.
Security property
The Telnet security property specifies whether Telnet sessions to a DS appli-
ance will be in Plain Text m ode or SSL m ode.
Download from Www.Somanuals.com. All Manuals Search And Download.
6 6
DSView Installer/User Guide
In Plain Text m ode, all data is sent unencrypted to the DS appliance. When
Plain Text m ode is used, any Telnet application that supports VT52, VT100,
VT100+, VT102, VT220, VT320 or ASCII term inal em ulation m ay be used to
access the DS appliance.
In SSL m ode, all data sent to the device during the DSView Telnet session is
DES encrypted. The DS appliance supports anonym ous Diffie-Hellm an key
exchange. The exchange of certificates for authentication is not supported.
When SSL m ode is used, only the built-in DSView Telnet application m ay be
used to access the DS appliance. The ports on a DS appliance have the sam e
security property as the device.
The security property is set in DSView and in the DS appliance from the Com -
m and Line Interface (CLI). When you initiate access to a DS appliance or port
via Telnet from DSView, DSView attem pts to read the security property directly
from the DS appliance.
If the SSL property has not been enabled on the DS appliance, and DSView
receives confirm ation from the DS appliance, DSView will autom atically open
its built-in Telnet application and you will be prom pted for a DS appliance
usernam e and password.
After that inform ation has been entered, an SSL connection to the DS appliance
is established over TCP port 8192. When that connection is established, the DS
appliance validates the user’s access privileges and port availability. In this case,
the Telnet property screen in DSView for that DS appliance will autom atically be
set to SSL values, even if they previously held Plain Text m ode values. The
property screen will be disabled, and you will not be allowed to change any of its
values. The DSView database will be updated with the inform ation read from
the DS appliance.
If DSView does not receive a reply from the DS appliance, it will use the secu-
rity m ode settings in the DSView database. In this case, the Telnet property
screen in DSView for that DS appliance will show the database values, and you
will be able to change them .
Setting the security property
The security property that is set when a DS appliance is added to the DSView
database depends on the m ethod being used to add the device.
If the Run New Device Install wizard m ethod is used, you are prom pted to
select the security m ode. It should m atch the DS appliance Server Security
Mode value that was set via the DS appliance CLI.

Appendix E: Setting SNMP Traps (Windows NT/
2000/ XP Only)
An SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) trap is a notification sent by a
DS appliance to a host system indicating that an event has occurred in the DS
appliance that m ay require further attention.
SNMP is a protocol used to communicate management information between
network management applications and DS appliances using TCP/IP and IPX pro-
tocols. Other SNMP managers (such as Tivoli and HP OpenView) may communi-
cate with your DS appliance by accessing MIB-II (Management Information Base)
and the public portion of the enterprise MIB. MIB-II is a standard MIB that many
SNMP target devices support. When you access a DS appliance for the first time,
DSAuth will retrieve the SNMP parameters from the DS appliance.
DS appliances are defined on the host by criteria such as system inform ation,
which stations m ay m anage the DS appliance, which stations m ay receive
SNMP traps from the switch and the com m unity to which they belong. If you
select Options - System Settings from the DSAuth window and then check Enable
SNMP trap log in the System Settings dialog box, the appliance will log SNMP
received m essages over UDP (User Datagram Protocol) port 162.
The traps m ust be configured on each DS appliance using the CLI interface.
The address of the server running DSAuth m ust be configured as a trap recipi-
ent, the proper com m unity m ust be set, and each desired trap m ust be enabled.
To use SNMP trap logging:
1. Install and configure TCP/IP on the DSAuth Server.
2. Install the SNMP service on the DSAuth Server, configure the host as trap
recipient and enable the traps.
3. Enable the SNMP service on the DSAuth Server.
