is u sed for player maintenance and management. This mode is u sed primarily
by Au thorized Service Company (ASC) personnel to determine key part
nu mbers of the player and to service the player. Generally, the player is not
controlled in this mode.
2.1.2 Active States
CLD-V2800 processing is performed within several distinct Active Sta tes. When a
command is execu ted, the Active Sta te changes inside the player. If you consider
player processing as a series of events within the Active Sta tes listed below, it is
easier to u nderstand the effects of variou s commands. The player’s five main Active
Sta tes are:
• Door Open
• Pa rk
• Spin Up
• Ra ndom Access
• Spin Down

3 External Computer Control — Level III
This chapter describes the compu ter control protocol and specific commands u sed
for Level III control of the CLD-V2800 player. To attach a compu ter to the player via
the RS-232 port, refer to Appen d ix C, In ter fa ce Ca ble Specifica tion s. See
Section 2 .4 On -Scr een Fu n ction Switch es, page 2-6, to select Bau d Rate.
3.1 Command and Status
In th e CLD-V2800 extern al com pu ter con trol protocol, th e com pu ter tran sm its a
command; when the player completes execu tion of the command, it retu rns an “R”.
ASCII ch aracter codes are u sed for th e actu al com m an ds an d statu s respon ses.
Th e com m an d m n em on ic is expressed as two ASCII ch aracters. In m ost cases,
th ere is n o distin ction between th e u se of u ppercase or lowercase letters, an d th e
u se of u ppercase letters is recom m en ded.

Argu m en ts m ay be set to specify th e fram e n u m ber, speed or oth er valu es for a
com m an d. Th e argu m en t is always placed before th e com m an d. Th e com m an d is
also u sed as th e term in ator of th e argu m en t. In th e sim plest protocol, th e player
im m ediately execu tes on e com m an d as soon as th e term in ator of th e com m an d
lin e, a <CR> (carriage retu rn ), is received.
Exa m p le: 1000SE<CR> : Search to fram e 1000.
Th e player h as a com m an d bu ffer th at allows m u ltiple com m an ds to be sen t from

In th is exam ple, wh en th e <CR> is received, com m an ds are execu ted sequ en tially
from th e first com m an d of th e bu ffer. Th e “R” is retu rn ed to th e com pu ter after th e
play segm en t is com pleted. If a <CR> is sen t before a com m an d or com m an d strin g

In th e com m an d lin e, codes su ch as <SPACE> or <LF> (lin e feed) th at do n ot affect
player operation are ign ored. Th e len gth of th e com m an d lin e is lim ited to th e
bu ffer size. For th e CLD-V2800 th e len gth of a com m an d strin g is lim ited to 20
ch aracters. Th e <CR> or <LF> are n ot in clu ded in th e bu ffer size.
When all the commands in a string are completely execu ted, the player transmits the
“completion” message. (It sends an “R” <CR>.) If an error occu rs, an error m essage
su ch as E04 <CR> is retu rn ed by th e player. Th is in dicates th e error occu rren ce,
alon g with th e error code. See Sec. 3 .2 Er r or Mes s a ges, page 3-3.
The au tomatic retu rn of an “R” following command execu tion is called Automa tic
Sta tus. Automa tic Sta tus is very u sefu l when working with some compu ter
programs, becau se it allows the program to know the appropriate time to send the
next command. If this fu nction is not u sed, the command processing time mu st be
taken into consideration before the next command is sent. (To set Au tomatic Statu s
ON or OFF, see the Level III command for Com m u n ica tion Con tr ol on page 3-38.)
3.1.1 Request Status
Wh en an error m essage is received, it m ay be n ecessary to determ in e th e player’s
cu rren t statu s in order to con tin u e a program . A variety of con dition s can occu r
wh ich m ay cau se an error code to be sen t. Sin ce actu al h ardware failu re in th e
player is a relatively rare even t, oth er con dition s m ay be detected wh ich wou ld
allow a program to recover an d con tin u e operation . Even wh en th ere is n o error,
th ere are occasion s wh en player statu s or disc in form ation is u sefu l. In su ch a
case, th e Reques t Sta tus fu n ction can be u sed.
Th e u ser m ay wan t to fin d ou t th e cu rren t fram e n u m ber even if th ere is n o error.
Reques t Sta tus com m an ds can be u sefu l u n der th ese con dition s. On th e
CLD-V2800 players, som e of th e m ain Reques t Sta tus com m an ds in Level III are as
follows:
1) To kn ow th e active m ode of th e player: ?P
2) To kn ow th e cu rren t fram e, tim e, or ch apter n u m ber for LDs: ?F, ?T, ?C
3) To kn ow th e cu rren t track, tim e, block in dex or p-block n u m bers

3.5 Command Formats
Level III commands on the CLD-V2800 are expressed as “Command Mnemonics”, so
they are easy to remember. “Command Mnemonics” are also u sed for Level III control
of the CLD-V2600, CLD-V2400, LD-V8000, LD-V4400, the LD-V2200, & LD-V4200
(a discontinu ed models), the LC-V330 Au tochanger, as well as for the LD-V4100 (PAL
player), CLD-V2300 (NTSC/ PAL) and the LD-V4300D (NTSC/ PAL player). Some
commands are preceded by an “argu ment” expressed as an integer. These may
indicate a specific “address” location on the disc or set fu nction parameters.
Command Mnemonic — Each Level III com m an d is expressed as two ASCII
alph abetic ch aracters, represen tin g th e com m an d m n em on ic. Th ere is n o
distin ction between u ppercase letters an d lowercase letters. Exa m p le: PL (Play);
Pl (Play); pl (Play).
Argument —An argu m en t is expressed in ASCII digits an d it is placed before th e
com m an d. Wh en a com m an d requ irin g an argu m en t h as n o argu m en t, an error
(E06) is retu rn ed. An argu m en t con sists of eith er an address or an in teger:
1) An Address — The address can be a frame, time, or chapter nu mber (LDs) or time,
block, track or index nu mber (CDs) depending how the address flag is set. When an
address larger than the maximu m allowable valu e is inpu t, correct evalu ation cannot
be made. Addresses may be expressed as nu mbers indicated below:

A Search command can accept u p to the last frame, chapter or time nu mber encoded
on a LaserDisc. Maximu m nu mber of frames on one side of a LaserVision standard
videodisc is 54,000 (CAV), Chapters, 0-79 (CAV or CLV), time nu mbers 59.59 (CLV).
(One side of CLV disc holds one-hou r of fu ll motion video, time nu mbers can be
encoded that describe running time of a program taking u p several sides of several discs
u p to 9:59.59.) If a frame, chapter or time nu mber larger than the last one encoded on
a LaserDisc is entered, the player will search to the highest nu mber encoded on the disc
and then enter Still (CAV) or Pause Mode (CLV). If a block, index or time nu mber larger
than the last one encoded on a CD is entered, the player will not execu te the search.
3) (Address) or (Integer) — Wh en an argu m en t, an address or an in teger, is

• When an error occu rs, su bsequ ent commands in a string will not be execu ted.
• If a new command string is inpu t before execu tion of a cu rrent string has been
