connected to the receiver, be sure the antenna system is

grounded so as to provide some protection against voltage

surges and built up static charges.

Section 810 of the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA

No. 70-1984, provides information with respect to proper

grounding of the mast and supporting structure grounding

of the lead-in wire to an antenna discharge unit, size of

grounding connectors, location of antenna discharge unit,

connection to grounding electrodes and requirements for

the grounding electrode. See Figure below.

10. Protect the power cord from being walked on or pinched,

particularly at plugs, convenience receptacles, and the

point where they exit from the apparatus.

11. Only use attachments/accessories specified by the

manufacturer.

DVD Disc Menus

Some explanations in this manual describe the DVD Disc Menus, which vary

among DVDs. DVD Disc Menus allow you to choose different playback fea-

tures from those available on the DVD. If the DVD has a menu, access it by

pressing DISC MENU on the remote control. Details are on page 20.

Player’s System Menu or Setup Menu

Some instructions explain how to use the Player’s System Menu to set up fea-

tures of the Player or the Disc. Access the Player’s System Menu by pressing

SYSTEM MENU on the remote control. Even if a feature is set up in the

System Menu, it will not be available if the current Disc does not include that

feature. The Player also refers to the System Menu as the Setup Menu. These

are the same.

Available Disc Features

Features described in this manual may not be available on every Disc. If

the feature is not on the Disc, you cannot use the Player to make the

feature available. The will appear in the top left corner of the TV

screen if you try to access a feature that is not on the Disc.

Playable Discs

This Player will play Digital Video Discs (DVDs), Video Compact Discs

(VCDs), Super Video CDs, Audio CDs, and the Audio CD layer of Super

Audio CDs. This Player also plays MP3 files recorded onto a Compact Disc

Recordable (CD-R) or a Compact Disc Rewritable (CD-RW).

Discs having the following logos should play on this Player. DVDs must also

meet the Region Code and Color System requirements described below.

Region Codes

DVDs must be labeled for ALL regions or for Region 1 in order to play on

this Player. You cannot play Discs that are labeled for other regions.

Look for the symbols below on your DVDs. If these region symbols do not

appear on your DVD, you cannot play the DVD in this Player.

The number inside the globe refers to a region of the world. Region 1 repre-

sents the United States of America, Canada, upper regions of North America,

Bermuda, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and small regions near Australia.

A Disc encoded in a specific region format can play only on DVD Players that

have the same region code. So, if a Disc is labeled for Region 2, you cannot

play that DVD on this Player (because this is a Region 1 Player).

Color Systems

Different color systems are available throughout the world. DVD makers

record DVDs in a certain Color System. The Color System of the DVD may

appear on the DVD or its case. The most common color systems are NTSC,

which is used primarily in the United States and North America, PAL, and

SECAM.

The Player’s Color System must be the same as your DVDs and your TV. Set

the Player’s Color System to NTSC or PAL by repeatedly pressing VIDEO

SYS on the remote while playback is stopped. Details are on page 33.

Cleaning Discs

G Clean Discs with a cleaning cloth. Wipe from the center to the edge in

a straight line.

Helpful Hints

• If you are having trouble playing

a certain Disc, remove the Disc

and try a different one.

Improperly formatted Discs will

not play on this Player.

• This Player supports only the

first session of multi-session

Discs.

G Do not use solvents such as benzine, thinner, commercially-available

cleaners, or anti-static spray intended for analog discs.

G If the Player cannot read Discs correctly, use a commonly available

cleaning CD/DVD to clean the lens. Other cleaning methods may

destroy the lens. Always keep the tray closed to avoid dust on the lens.

G The lens may cloud over if you suddenly move the Player from cold to

warm surroundings. Playing a Disc is not possible then. Leave the power

on for about one hour with no Disc in the unit until playback is possible.

Determining the best possible connection...

Your existing equipment, especially your TV, will determine your connection possibilities. However, the

following guidelines describe which options provide the best picture and sound quality.

Component Video provides the best picture quality. Details are on page 11.

S-Video provides excellent picture quality. Details are on page 10.

Composite Video (a yellow Video jack) provides good picture quality.

Details are on page nine.

Your TV may have only an RF-style jack, usually labeled Antenna In or 75 ohm

or RF In. You will need an RF modulator in order to view the Player’s materi-

als at your TV. See your electronics retailer or contact Philips for details on

RF modulator availability and operations.

Digital audio connections provide the clearest sound, but you must have a digital Stereo.

Connect either the COAXIAL or OPTICAL Digital Audio Out jack of the Player to your

Stereo’s Coaxial or Optical Digital Audio In jack for the best sound quality.

Details are on page 13.

If you have a Multichannel Receiver, connect the Player’s FL, FR, SL, SR, CENTER, and

SUBW. jacks to the corresponding In jacks on the Receiver. (A Multichannel Receiver is

connected to six speakers: Front Left, Front Right, Surround/Rear Left, Surround/Rear

Right, Center, and Subwoofer.) Details are on page 14.

If you have a Philips Multichannel Receiver, it may have a Multichannel 5.1 Audio In jack. If

so, connect the Player’s MULTI-5.1 (Out) jack to the appropriate Multichannel 5.1 Audio

In jack on the Philips Receiver.

If digital connections or multichannel connections are not possible, connect the Player’s

FL (front left, white) and FR (front right, red) jacks to the left and right Audio In jacks of

your Stereo or TV. Details are on pages 9-12.

If your TV has a single Audio In jack instead of separate left/right Audio In jacks, you will

need a different audio cable than the one supplied. You need a “splitter” audio cable to go

from the FL (front left, white) and FR (front right, red) jacks of the Player to the single

Audio In jack on your TV. See an electronics retailer or contact Philips for details.

Before you begin...

Refer to the manuals of your TV, Stereo, Receiver, or other equipment as necessary. Note the

style of jacks and connectors on the other equipment. Determine how to choose different Audio

and Video In channels on your other equipment so you can see and hear the Player’s materials on

the TV, Stereo, etc. Some equipment may let you choose the channels using a remote control or

by adjusting a TV/VIDEO/AUXILIARY/SOURCE switch.

Disconnect all equipment from the power outlets. Connect the equipment to the power outlets

only after you have finished hooking up everything. Never make or change connections with

equipment connected to the power outlet.

Remember...

Connect the Player directly to the TV. For example, do not connect the Player to a VCR, then

connect the VCR to a TV. This type of connection may distort the picture and sound. Also, your

VCR may have a copy protection system that may distort the picture or prevent playback of some

Discs.

Set the TV to the correct Video In channel. Such channels may be called AUX or AUXILIARY IN,

AUDIO/VIDEO or A/V IN, EXT1 or EXT2 or External In, etc. These channels are often near

channel 00. Your TV or its remote control may have a Video or Auxiliary switch/button that

allows you to choose the correct Video In channel. See your TV manual for details. Or, change TV

channels until you see the Player’s blue background screen on the TV.

Set the Stereo or Receiver to the correct channel or “source” mode.

Do not connect any of the Player’s Audio Out jacks (FL, FR, etc.) to the PHONO IN jack of your

Stereo.

You only need one audio connection and one video connection between the Player and your TV

and/or Stereo. So, you will not use all the jacks on the Player.

Set TV TYPE (page 33), VIDEO OUT (page 35), and AUDIO OUT (page 36) accordingly.

Once you determine the best option, find your choice on pages 9-14. Follow the

steps for the hookup you choose.

low VIDEO jack and to the corresponding VIDEO IN jack

on your TV.

Connect the supplied red and white audio cables to the

Player’s FR (front right, red) and FL (front left, white) jacks

and to the right/left AUDIO IN jacks on the TV. Match the

cable colors to the jack colors.

Connect the supplied power adaptor to the 12V jack on the

rear of the Player.

Connect the power plugs of the Player’s adaptor and the

TV to a power outlet.

Press POWER y or DVD y to turn on the Player.

Turn on the TV and set the TV to the correct Audio/Video

In channel. Such channels may be called AUX or AUXILIARY

IN, AUDIO/VIDEO or A/V IN, EXT1 or EXT2, etc. These chan-

nels often are near channel 00. See your TV owner’s manual for

details. Or, change channels at the TV until you see the Player’s

blue background screen on the TV.

to the corresponding Pr/Cr Pb/Cb Y VIDEO IN jacks on the

TV. Use component video cable (not supplied). Match the cable col-

ors to the jack colors if your cables are color-coded.

Connect the supplied red and white audio cables to the

Player’s FR (front right, red) and FL (front left, white) jacks

and to the right/left AUDIO IN jacks on the TV. Match the

cable colors to the jack colors.

Connect the supplied yellow video cable to the Player’s yel-

low VIDEO jack and to the corresponding VIDEO IN jack

on your TV.

Connect either the COAXIAL or OPTICAL jack of the

Player to the corresponding COAXIAL or OPTICAL Digital

Audio In jack on your Stereo. You only need one connection, so

you will not use both jacks. Use a digital audio cable (not supplied).

Connect the supplied power adaptor to the 12V jack on the

rear of the Player.

Connect the power plugs of the Player’s adaptor, the TV,

and the Stereo to a power outlet.

Press POWER y or DVD y to turn on the Player.

Turn on the TV and set it to the correct Video In channel.

Such channels may be called AUX or AUXILIARY IN,

AUDIO/VIDEO or A/V IN, EXT1 or EXT2, etc. These channels

often are near channel 00. See your TV owner’s manual for

details. Or, change channels at the TV until you see the Player’s

blue background screen on the TV.

Connect the Player’s SUBW. (subwoofer) jack to the

Connect the Player’s FR (front right, red) and FL (front left,

white) jacks to the Receiver’s right and left FRONT AUDIO

IN jacks. You may use the supplied red and white audio cables.

Connect the Player’s SR (surround right) and SL (surround

left) jacks to the right/left SURROUND IN jacks on your

Receiver. Your Receiver may refer to Surround as Rear. These are

the same.

Connect the supplied power adaptor to the 12V jack on the

rear of the Player.

Connect the power plugs of the Player’s adaptor, the TV,

the Receiver, and its Speakers to a power outlet.

Putting Batteries in the Remote Control

Remove the battery compartment lid on the back of the

remote control by pressing in the tab, then lifting off the lid.

Place two AA batteries inside the battery compartment

with their and ends aligned as indicated. Do not mix old

–

and new batteries or different types of batteries (standard, alkaline,

etc.).

Replace the battery compartment lid as shown at right.

Using the Remote Control

Always point the remote control directly at the remote sensor (IR or

infrared) on the front of the Player, not the TV. Details are on page 18.

Make sure there are no barriers between the remote control and the

Player.

Connecting the Base

A base is provided with the Player to add stability and to allow you to posi-

tion the Player horizontally or vertically, whichever fits your setup situation

best. To connect the base, follow these steps.

Use a coin to loosen the screw on the base.

Decide whether you want to attach the Player to the base

vertically or horizontally. Turn the Player vertically or hori-

zontally, then find the screw hole in the Player that you

need to use.

If you want to attach the Player to the base horizontally, use the

screw hole that is just below the COAXIAL and OPTICAL jacks.

If you want to attach the Player to the base vertically, use the screw

hole that is to the right of the MULTI-5.1 jack.

Vertical Attachment

Place the Player on the base so the screw aligns with the

hole on the Player. Insert and tighten the screw to secure

the Player to the base. Use a coin to tighten the screw.

16 Quick Disc Playback

There are many playback features and options available on Discs. After

familiarizing yourself with the Player and its remote control as described

on pages 17-19, see pages 20 and following to try additional playback fea-

tures.

Press POWER

to turn on the Player.

Turn on your TV. Set it to the correct Video In channel.

You should see the blue background screen on the TV (if no Disc is

in the Player).

Gently insert a Disc into the Disc Slot so that about one-

third of the Disc is in the slot. From that point, the Player

will take the Disc and load it automatically.

Do not force a Disc into the Disc Slot. If the Player does not

immediately accept the Disc, take away the Disc. Press EJECT c

on the front of the Player to make sure there is not another disc

in the Player already.

Load Discs with the label facing up and the shiny side facing down.

If a Disc is two-sided, make sure the side you want to play is fac-

ing up when you put it in the Disc slot.

After the Player loads the Disc, playback may begin auto-

matically. If not, press PLAY/PAUSE M. Playback will stop

at the end of the Title or after the last Track.

If DVD playback does not start automatically, a Disc menu

may appear. If the Title or Chapter selections are numbered,

press a Number button to select an item. Or, press 98 ;

: to select an item, then press OK.

To stop playback at any time, press STOP/RETURN

once. To resume playing the Disc later from the same point,

press PLAY/PAUSE M.

If you press STOP/RETURN C twice to stop playing the Disc, play

will start at the beginning of the Disc the next time you resume

playback.

• DVDs have a region code. This

Player only plays DVDs that are

Press to remove a Disc from the Player.

Disc Slot

Insert a Disc here. Insert about one-third of the Disc,

then the Player will accept the Disc automatically.

Do not press the Disc or force the Disc into the

Player. If the Player does not automatically accept the

Disc, press EJECT c to make sure there is not a

Disc already in the Player. Load the Disc with the

label facing up (shiny side facing down). If the Disc is

two-sided, the side you want to play must face up.

STANDBY light

This light is green when the Player is on. The light is orange

when the Player is off.

Display

Current Disc information appears here. Such information

may include the elapsed playing time or messages regarding

current Player activity.

Remote Sensor (IR or infrared)

Point the Player’s remote control here when using the

remote to operate the Player.

STOP C Button

Press once to stop playback. Play can resume from the same

point the next time you start playback.

If you press STOP C twice to stop playback, play will

resume from the beginning of the Disc the next time you

start playback.

PREV (Previous) H Button

Press to go to previous Chapters or Tracks.

jacks of a TV or Stereo.

FL is Front Left; FR is Front Right; SL is Surround/Rear Left;

SR is Surround/Rear Right; and SUBW. represents Subwoofer.

MULTI-5.1 jack

If you have a Philips Multichannel Receiver, it may have a

Multichannel 5.1 Audio In jack. If so, connect the Player’s

MULTI-5.1 (Out) jack to the appropriate Multichannel 5.1

Audio In jack on the Philips Receiver. Otherwise, you will not

use this jack.

Title/Disc Menus

Press DISC MENU to access the main DVD Disc menu.

(ROOT MENU may appear in the top left corner of the TV screen

briefly.) The menu may list camera angles, spoken language and

subtitle options, Chapters for the Title, or other Disc features.

Or, press TITLE if the current Title of the current DVD has a

Title menu. The Title menu will appear on the screen.

Press 9 8 ; : to select items in the menu, then press

OK. Continue until you set up all the features you want or until

you start Disc playback.

Although some Disc menus may list a “Play” option, select “Play”

and press OK on the Player’s remote - not PLAY/PAUSE M - to

start playback.

Chapter/Track Selection

Press NEXT ∑ during playback to go to the next

Track/Chapter.

Press PREV w, repeatedly if necessary, to return to the

beginning of a previous Track/Chapter.

To skip to a specific DVD Chapter during playback, press

SEARCH. While the space beside CHAPTER is highlight-

ed and within 10 seconds, press the Number buttons to

enter the Chapter number you want. Then, press OK. The

Chapter will start to play immediately.

If the desired Chapter is 10 or greater, use the +10 button. For

example, to select Chapter 15, press +10, then press 5, then press

OK.

Forward and Reverse Searching

Press FWD D to fast forward during playback. Press

FWD D repeatedly to choose FF 1, FF 2, FF 3, or FF 4.

FF 1 plays the Disc one time as fast; FF 2 plays the Disc twice as

fast; FF 3 plays the Disc three times as fast; and FF 4 plays the

Disc four times as fast.

Or, press REV h for a reverse search during playback.

Press REV h repeatedly to choose FR 1, FR 2, FR 3, or

FR 4.

To resume normal playback, either press PLAY/PAUSE

M or press FWD D or REV h repeatedly until regu-

lar play resumes. PLAY will appear briefly in the top left corner

of the TV screen.

Slow Motion

During playback, press SLOW FWD to play the Disc for-

ward in slow motion. Press SLOW FWD repeatedly to choose

the speed of slow motion you prefer. SF 1 (slow), SF 2 (slower),

or SF 3 (slowest) will appear in the top left corner of the TV

screen. SF represents Slow Forward.

Or, press SLOW REV to play the Disc in reverse in slow

motion. Press SLOW REV repeatedly to choose the speed of

slow motion you prefer. SR 1 (slow), SR 2 (slower), or SR 3

(slowest) will appear in the top left corner of the TV screen. SR

represents Slow Reverse.

Slow Reverse is not available on all Discs.

To resume normal playback speed, either press

PLAY/PAUSE M or press SLOW FWD or SLOW REV

repeatedly until regular play resumes. PLAY will appear

Time Search lets you choose a specific elapsed playing time at which you

want to resume Disc playback.

Press SEARCH twice during DVD playback. On a DVD, the

current Title number and the total number of Titles available will

appear to the left of an empty TIME area.

Or, for a Video CD or Audio CD, press SEARCH once.

Within 10 seconds, press the Number buttons to enter

the elapsed playing time at which you want to resume

For a DVD, enter the amount of time in hours, minutes, and sec-

onds. The time must be available within the current Title.

For an Audio CD or Video CD, enter a time in minutes and sec-

onds that is within the current Track.

Press OK to start DVD playback. Playback will start at the

elapsed playing time you selected.

On an Audio CD or Video CD, you do not have to press OK.

The Disc will start playing automatically at the time you specified

after you enter the time.

Zooming lets you enlarge the video image during playback.

Press ZOOM

repeatedly during playback to select

ZOOM X1.5, ZOOM X2, or ZOOM X4. Play will continue as

usual, but the picture will be one-and-a-half (ZOOM X1.5), twice

(ZOOM X2), or four times (ZOOM X4) as large as usual.

To return the picture to its normal size, press ZOOM

again so ZOOM OFF appears briefly in the top left corner of the

TV screen.

Camera Angle

Some DVDs include scenes recorded from different angles. To watch seg-

ments from a different angle, follow these steps.

During DVD playback, press ANGLE } repeatedly to

choose the angle you want. In a few seconds, playback will

change to the selected angle. If different angles are not available dur-

ing the current scent, may appear in the top left corner of the TV

screen.

If ANGLE MARK is ON, the Angle Mark appears in the top right

corner of the TV screen during playback if multiple angles are avail-

able. Press the Number buttons to select a different angle. Or, press

ANGLE } repeatedly as described earlier. Angle Mark details are on

page 39.

You can set the Player to play only a specific portion of a Chapter or

Track repeatedly. Follow these steps.

Press PLAY/PAUSE M to start Disc playback.

When the Disc reaches the point at which you want

repeated playback to begin, press REPEAT A-B. This sets

Point A, or the point at which repeated playback will begin. A TO

B SET A will appear in the top left corner of the TV screen.

When the Disc reaches the point at which you want to

end the segment, press REPEAT A-B again. This sets Point

B, or the point at which repeated playback will end. The segment

will begin playing repeatedly. A TO B SET B will appear in the top

left corner of the TV screen.

To resume regular playback, press REPEAT A-B again.

Regular playback will resume. A TO B CANCELLED will appear in

the top left corner of the TV screen.

Audio Language

Some DVDs are recorded in different languages. You may be able to

watch the same movie in French, Spanish, etc. The movie may have spe-

cial audio features, such as a director’s commentary or music soundtrack.

If these are available on the DVD, access the different languages or fea-

tured soundtracks by following these steps.

Subtitles

26 Disc Menu Language

Most DVDs have a Disc menu that appears when you insert the DVD in

the Player or when you press DISC MENU on the Player’s remote to

access the Disc menu. The Player also refers to this as the ROOT MENU

of the DVD.

If the DVD maker recorded the Disc menu in different languages, you

may be able to see the menu in the other languages by adjusting DISC

MENU in the Player’s PREFERENCES menu as described below.

select PREFERENCES only if you completely stopped playback as

directed in step 1.

CHINESE, or JAPANESE, then press OK. The Disc menu

will appear in the language you selected only if that language is

recorded on the DVD. Some DVDs will allow you to change the

its case for details.

Favorite Track Selection (FTS) lets you play Tracks in an order you set

up. The order in which you set the Tracks is called a Program.

While playback is stopped, press PROGRAM FTS.

Press the Number buttons to enter the number of the

Track you want to play first. The Track number will appear to

the right of the Program position in which you stored the Track.

To enter Track numbers above nine, use the +10 button. For

example, to enter Track 18, press +10, then 8. To enter Track 24,

press +10 twice, then press 4.

DVD VIDEO CD

Parental Control limits viewing of Discs that exceed the limits you set.

This feature will not limit viewing if the Disc manufacturer did not code

the Disc. Philips cannot guarantee the availability of Parental Control

with all Discs, and therefore denies any liability associated with

unintended watching of Discs. Make sure your Discs play according

to your Parental Control settings before you allow children access to

the Player or Discs.

play according to the level you set at the Player. The Parental Control level

may apply to the complete Disc or to certain scenes on the Disc. Follow the

steps below to set the Parental Level at which you want Discs to play.

30 Preview, Playback Control

VIDEO CD

Preview

Some Video CDs or Super Video CDs may contain preview or introducto-

ry information. Preview will be useful when you want to go directly to a

Track but cannot remember the Track number of the segment you are

seeking.

While playback is stopped, press PREVIEW.

A small picture representing the beginning of each Track will appear

on the TV screen. A maximum of nine Track pictures can appear on

the screen at once.

When you see the Track you want to play, press the

Number button for that Track. That Track will start playing

immediately.

VIDEO CD

Playback Control (PBC)

This feature is available only on Video CDs. The Video CD must be

compatible with Playback Control. Check the Video CD case for details.

Load a Video CD with PBC and press PLAY/PAUSE M.

The Video CD will show instructions or options on the TV

screen. Use the Player’s remote control buttons as directed by

the Video CD.

Press PBC ON/OFF to turn Playback Control on or off.

MP3 Playback 31

MP3 is a compression method that makes digital music files up to 10

times smaller without losing significant sound quality. MP3 is common on

the Internet, letting you transfer Tracks to your computer and onto a

CD Recordable or CD Rewritable disc. Materials and equipment with

which to make MP3 recordings are not supplied with this Player.

MP3 Tracks are recorded at a certain bit rate or speed. Slower bit rates

(32 kbps or 64 kbps) let you record more using less Disc space, but have

the lowest sound quality. Faster bit rates (256 kbps or 320 kbps) provide

better sound quality but use a lot of Disc space. The average bit rates (96

kbps or 128 kbps) provide CD-like quality and are most recommended.

Keep these characteristics in mind when making Discs that you intend to

play on this Player.

This Player supports the following characteristics of MP3 files:

G File or Track names ending in .mp3

G Names of Albums, Artists, etc., with a maximum of 30 characters

G Maximum nested directory of eight levels

G Sampling frequencies: 32 kHz, 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz

G Bit-rates: 32-256 kbps

G The first session of multisession discs

The following characteristics are not supported:

G File or Track names ending in .wma, .aac, .dlf, .m3u, and .pls

G Chinese file names

G Non-session closed discs

G Discs recorded in UDF format

MP3 Features

When you insert a Disc with MP3 files, the Tracks and

Albums (or Folders) available for playback will appear on

the screen. It may take the Player several seconds to recognize

the Disc.

During playback, press NEXT ∑ or PREV w to move to

different Tracks. MP3 will appear on the Player’s display panel

during playback.

When playback is stopped, press 9 or 8 to select a Track

or Folder. Press OK to open a Folder or to start playing a

Track.

GSelect FOLDER to play Tracks in normal order. Leave PLAY

32 JPEG Playback

Some CD-Rs may contain pictures in a JPEG format. For example, you may

have photographic film developed by a retailer that places the pictures on a

CD-R for you. These pictures may be in JPEG format. You cannot make or

record such CD-Rs using this Player. See your computer manual for details

on making CD-R recordings.

If you are playing a CD-R on this Player and the CD-R contains JPEG files,

you may want to use some of the JPEG features described below.

When you insert a Disc with JPEG files, the files or pic-

tures available for playback will be listed on the screen.

Or, during playback, press NEXT ∑ or PREV w to move

to different JPEG images.

After you open one JPEG picture, each subsequent file will appear

automatically for five seconds. To keep the JPEG image on the

Press PREVIEW during JPEG file playback to see up to

nine miniature pictures, each representing a JPEG image.

The file you were viewing when you pressed PREVIEW will appear

in the first box. To play a specific JPEG file from the Preview

screen, press 9 8 ; : to select a file, then press OK.

Press 9 8 ; : to rotate or flip an image during playback

(if Zoom is off).

Press ZOOM a to enlarge an image during playback.

Press REV h to reduce the picture’s size or press FWD g to

enlarge the image. Press ZOOM a again to turn off Zoom.

TV Type (NTSC/PAL)

DVDs are recorded according to a Color System, the most common of

which are NTSC and PAL. NTSC is the most common in the United

States. Your TV also operates according to a Color System.

This Player is compatible with NTSC and PAL. However, in order for a

DVD to play on this Player, the Color System of the DVD, the TV, and

the Player should match. If all three are not the same, the DVD may play

in only black and white, the picture may roll continuously, or the picture

may appear distorted.

The TV TYPE feature allows you to set the Player to match the Color

Systems of your DVD and your TV.

The simplest way to change the TV Type or Color System is to press

VIDEO SYS repeatedly while playback is stopped until MULTI, NTSC,

or PAL appears on the TV screen.

Letterbox, Pan & Scan, or Wide. The TV Display you select must be

available on the DVD. If not, the TV Display setting will not affect the

picture.

Stereo that has a Dolby Pro Logic decoder.

G CNTR DELAY (center delay): Choose a delay time for the

Center speaker in milliseconds (1-5 milliseconds), or select OFF

for no speaker delay.

G REAR DELAY: Choose a delay time for the Rear/Surround

speakers in milliseconds (3-15 milliseconds in three second incre-

ments), or select OFF for no speaker delay.

G TEST TONE: Select ON to check your speakers. If all the

speakers are connected correctly, you should hear a “hissing”

sound from each speaker during the test. Choose OFF when you

want to stop testing the speakers. (Make sure the volume is not

muted at the Receiver. If the volume is muted, you will not hear

the test tone through the speakers.)

remote. The screen saver prevents damage to your TV screen caused by

leaving a still image on the TV too long.

If you are having problems with your product, check this list of problems and possible solutions before

requesting service. You may be able to solve the problem yourself.

If you need to call a customer service representative, please know the model number and serial num-

ber of your product before you call. This information is on the rear of the product. Also, please take a

moment to identify the problem you are having, and be prepared to explain this to the representative.

If you believe the representative will need to help you with operations, please stay near the product.

Our representatives will be happy to assist you.

No power

• Press POWER

on the front of the Player or DVD

on the remote to turn on the Player.

• Make sure you connected the power adaptor properly. Connect the adaptor to the 12V jack on the

rear of the Player and to an active power outlet. Use only the supplied adaptor.

• Make sure the power outlet has power by trying another appliance in the same outlet.

No picture

• Make sure the TV power is on.

• Check the video cable(s). Make sure the cable(s) are fastened securely to the Player and to the TV.

• Set your TV to the correct Video In channel. These channels are usually near channel 00. Or, you

may have a button on the TV remote control that selects an Auxiliary, Video, or A/V IN channel. See

your TV owner’s manual for details. Or, just change channels at the TV until you see the DVD logo

in the blue background screen on the TV.

• You only need one video connection. Refer to page eight to see what connection best suits your sit-

uation.

• If you used S-Video connections as described on page 10, set VIDEO OUT to (S-) VIDEO. If you

used Component Video connections as described on page 11, set VIDEO OUT to YCBCR. Details

are on page 35.

Distorted picture

• Check the Disc for fingerprints. Clean the Disc with a soft cloth, wiping from the center to the edge

in a straight line.

• Sometimes a small amount of picture distortion may appear. This is not a malfunction.

• Set TV TYPE correctly. If your TV uses NTSC, set the Player to NTSC. Likewise, the DVDs you play

must be in NTSC format. Details are on page 33. You can set the Player to NTSC or PAL simply by

pressing VIDEO SYS repeatedly when playback is stopped.

The picture is distorted or the picture is only black and white.

• TVs meet NTSC or PAL Color System standards. If the Disc’s or Player’s Color System is different

than your TV’s Color System, the picture will be distorted or colorless.

However, you can change the Color System of the Player by adjusting TV TYPE. Details are on pages

7 and 33. Choose NTSC, PAL, or MULTI, depending on your TV and your Disc. You can set the

Player to NTSC or PAL simply by pressing VIDEO SYS repeatedly when playback is stopped.

The sound is distorted during Disc playback through a Stereo.

• Make sure you did not connect any cables from the Player to the Stereo’s “PHONO IN” jack.

• Check your AUDIO OUT setting. Details are on page 36.

No sound

• Check the audio connections. Details are on pages 9-14. Remember, you only need one audio connec-

tion. Refer to page eight to see what connection best suits your situation.

• Make sure cables are connected firmly to all equipment.

• Select another sound source or Auxiliary station at your Stereo or Receiver. See your

Stereo/Receiver manual for details. Or, just continue selecting the different sound sources or modes

on the Stereo/Receiver until you hear sound from the Disc that is in the Player.

Disc will not play.

• Make sure the Disc label is facing up when you put the Disc in the Player. If you are playing a two-

sided Disc, make sure the side you want to play is facing up. Details are on page 16.

• Check the Parental Control settings. Select NO_PARENTAL to turn off Parental Control and play all

Discs. Details are on pages 28-29.

• Check the NTSC/PAL settings of the Disc, your TV, and the Player. Details are on page 33.

• Check the Region Code of the Disc. The Disc must be coded for All regions or Region 1 in order to

play on this Player. Details are on page seven.

• See if the Disc is defective by trying another Disc. Make sure the Disc is not scratched or warped.

Carefully clean the Disc. Details are on page seven.

• Use a commonly available cleaning CD/DVD to clean the lens of the Player.

• Discs that are copy-protected or incorrectly coded by the manufacturer may not play on this Player.

Contact your retailer or the Disc manufacturer to obtain a compatible, playable Disc.

The Player does not respond to the remote control.

• Aim the remote control directly at the sensor (IR or infrared) on the front of the Player. Details are

on page 18.

• Remove any obstacles between the Player and the remote control.

• Inspect or replace the batteries in the remote control.

• Stand or sit directly in front of the Player when using the remote. Using the remote at an angle to

the Player (or from the side of the Player) may not work as efficiently.

The buttons on the Player or remote control do not work.

• To reset the Player, disconnect the adaptor’s power plug from the power outlet for several minutes.

Then reconnect the Player to power again.

The Player will not select some features, such as Angles, Subtitles, or multi-language

Audio.

• The feature may not be available on the Disc. If it is not,

will appear on the TV screen. Check the

Disc case to see if the Disc has the feature. If the Disc does not have the feature, the Player cannot

create the feature. This is not a malfunction of the Player.

• Some features can be changed only during playback. Other features can be changed only if playback is

stopped. Stop or start playback, then try the feature again.

The Player turns itself off.

• The Player will turn itself off automatically if you do not use the Player or its remote or if a Disc is

not playing. This is part of the Screen Saver feature. Details are on page 41.

44 Glossary

Analog: Sound that has not been turned into numbers. Analog sound varies, while digital sound has

specific numerical values. Analog sound is available when you use the red and white, left and right audio

jacks on your equipment. These jacks send audio through two channels, the left and right.

Bit Rate: The amount of data used to hold a given length of music; measured in kilobits per seconds,

or kbps. Or, the speed at which you record. Generally, the higher the bit rate, or the higher the

recording speed, the better the sound quality. However, higher bit rates use more space on a disc.

For example, an MP3 music file recorded at 32 kbps will record slowly, use the least Disc space, and

have the poorest sound quality. But, an MP3 music file recorded at 96 kbps will record quicker, use

more Disc space, and have significantly better sound quality.

CD: Compact Disc (audio).

COAXIAL jack: Sends digital audio to a Stereo, allowing you to adjust the volume at the Stereo.

The Stereo must have a Coaxial In jack. This connection provides the 5.1 channel surround sound as

heard in movie theaters.

Component Video: Use the Pr Pb Y jacks on the rear of the Player to send high-quality video to a

TV that has Component Video In jacks.

Digital: Sound that has been converted into numerical values. Digital sound is available when you use

the COAXIAL or OPTICAL Digital Audio jacks. These jacks send audio through multiple channels,

instead of just two channels as analog does.

Direct Stream Digital (DSD): New technology used to record Super Audio CDs. DSD uses a 1-

bit system with a digital sampling frequency 64 times higher than a regular Audio CD, resulting in a fre-

quency response of over 50 kHz and a 120 dB dynamic range.

Dolby Digital: A surround sound system that provides 5.1 channel sound as used in movie theaters.

DTS: Digital Theater Systems. This is a surround sound system, but it is different from Dolby Digital.

The formats were developed by different companies.

DVD: Digital Video Disc.

Letterbox: A TV aspect ratio setting (4:3). Displays the video in full-width, with black bars at the top

and bottom of the TV screen. This format is similar to seeing a movie in a theater. If the Disc does not

include a letterbox format , selecting Letterbox may have no effect. (For example, some DVDs are

two-sided, with one side playing in Letterbox and the other side playing in a normal format.) DVDs

may refer to Letterbox as the Widescreen format.

Multichannel sound: Available when you connect the Player to a six-channel Receiver. The Receiver

sends sound to six speakers: front left and right, rear or surround left and right, center, and sub-

woofer.

OPTICAL Jack: Converts electrical signals into optical signals before sending the audio to the

Stereo. Optical audio is not prone to external electrical influences and has less noise, which reduces

adverse effects on external equipment. Be sure to keep the protective cap on the jack when the jack is

not in use. This keeps dust out of the jack.

Pan & Scan: A TV aspect ratio setting (4:3). Displays the video with full-height picture, with one or

both sides of the picture trimmed. Some movie companies refer to this as “reformatting the picture to

fit your TV screen.”

Super Audio Compact Disc (SACD): There are three types of Super Audio CDs: single-layer,

dual-layer, and hybrid. Each may contain two areas of recorded audio: High Quality (HQ) Stereo and

High Quality (HQ) Multi-channel.

Hybrid SACDs may contain both HQ Stereo and HQ Multi-channel, plus a standard CD layer, making

it playable on standard CD players. Check the SACD Disc case to determine what type of SACD you

have. This Player will play only the CD layer (if it is available on the SACD).

S-Video: Produces a clearer picture by sending separate signals for the luminance and the color. If

you connect an S-Video cable, you will not need to use the supplied yellow video cable. You can use S-

Video only if your TV has an S-Video In jack.

VIDEO Jack: Yellow jack on the rear of the Player that sends video to a TV.

Widescreen: A TV aspect ratio setting (16:9). Displays the video appropriately when you connect

the Player to a widescreen TV.
