2.1 Internal Operations
Th e player’s in tern al operatin g processes are classified in to two grou ps: Opera ting
Modes in dicatin g player operation statu s, an d Active Sta tes in dicatin g player
processin g statu s.
2.1.1 Operating Modes
Th e CLD-V5000 h as th e followin g two Opera ting Modes: Norma l Control Mode an d
Tes t Mode. (See Figu re 2 -A on n ext page.)
Th ese m odes are defin ed as follows:
1) Normal Control Mode

2) Test Mode
The Test Mode is set in Register C u nder compu ter control. (See page 3-42) It
is u sed for player maintenance and management. This mode is u sed primarily
by Au thorized Service Company (ASC) personnel to determine key part
nu mbers of the player and to service the player. Generally, the player is not
controlled in this mode.
2.1.2 Active States
CLD-V5000 processing is performed within several distinct Active Sta tes. When a
command is execu ted, the Active Sta te changes inside the player. If you consider
player processing as a series of events within the Active Sta tes listed below, it is
easier to u nderstand the effects of variou s commands. The player’s five main Active
Sta tes are:
• Door Open
• Pa rk
• Spin Up
• Ra ndom Access
• Spin Down

3 External Computer Control — Level III
This chapter describes the compu ter control protocol and specific commands u sed
for Level III control of the CLD-V5000 player. To attach a compu ter to the player via
the RS-232 port, refer to Appen d ix C, In ter fa ce Ca ble Specifica tion s. and see
page 2-4 and 2-6 for information abou t setting the Bau d Rate.
3.1 Command and Status
In th e CLD-V5000 extern al com pu ter con trol protocol, th e com pu ter tran sm its a
command; when the player completes execu tion of the command, it retu rns an ÒRÓ.
ASCII ch aracter codes are u sed for th e actu al com m an ds an d statu s respon ses.
Th e com m an d m n em on ic is expressed as two ASCII ch aracters. In m ost cases,
th ere is n o distin ction between th e u se of u ppercase or lowercase letters, an d th e

When all the commands in a string are completely execu ted, the player transmits the
ÒcompletionÓ message. (It sends an ÒRÓ <CR>.) If an error occu rs, an error m essage

The au tomatic retu rn of an ÒRÓ following command execu tion is called Automa tic

programs, becau se it allows the program to know the appropriate time to send the
next command. If this fu nction is not u sed, the command processing time mu st be
taken into consideration before the next command is sent. (To set Au tomatic Statu s
ON or OFF, see the Level III command for Com m u n ica tion Con tr ol on page 3-38.)
3.1.1 Request Status
Wh en an error m essage is received, it m ay be n ecessary to determine the playerÕs
cu rren t statu s in order to con tin u e a program . A variety of con dition s can occu r
wh ich m ay cau se an error code to be sen t. Sin ce actu al h ardware failu re in th e

3.5 Command Formats
Level III commands on the CLD-V5000 are expressed as ÒCommand MnemonicsÓ, so
they are easy to remember. ÒCommand MnemonicsÓ are also u sed for Level III control
of the CLD-V2800, CLD-V2600, CLD-V2400, LD-V8000, LD-V4400; the LD-V2200,

V4100 (PAL player); CLD-V2300D and the LD-V4300D (NTSC/ PAL players). Some
commands are preceded by an ÒargumentÓ expressed as an integer. These may
indicate a specific ÒaddressÓ location on the disc or set fu nction parameters.

seconds, and frames. The CLD-V2800 will access the hou rs, minu tes
and seconds encoded on the disc. Older discs may only be encoded
with hou rs and minu tes. When a disc not encoded with seconds is
played, the seconds u nit is fixed to 0. (To determine CLV time
nu mber frame valu es on discs encoded with hou rs, minu tes, seconds
and frame nu mbers, send a ?F to the player. See page 3-31, Fra m e
