PREPARATION
CONNECTING POWER
Using Batteries
To power the SCP-100 with batteries, you need two
AA batteries (not supplied). We recommend alkaline
batteries, such as RadioShack Cat. No. 23-557.
Follow these steps to install batteries.
1. Pull up the black cassette compartment latch
and pull open the cassette compartment door.

2. Press the battery compartment cover’s tab in the
direction of the arrow and lift off the cover.

3. Install the batteries as indicated by the polarity
symbols (+ and –) marked inside the compart-
ment, with both batteries over the ribbon.
Cautions:
•
Use only fresh batteries of the required size
and type.
•
Do not mix old and new batteries, different
types of batteries (standard, alkaline, or
rechargeable), or rechargeable batteries of
different capacities.
4. Replace the battery compartment cover, then
close the cassette compartment door and latch.

If the SCP-100 does not operate properly or if the
sound becomes weak or distorted, replace the batter-
ies.
Cautions:
• Always dispose of old batteries promptly and
properly.
• Never leave dead, old, or weak batteries in the
SCP-100. They can leak chemicals and corrode
or damage electronic circuits.
• If you do not plan to power the SCP-100 with
batteries for several days, or if you plan to power
it using only an AC or DC adapter, remove the
batteries to protect the SCP-100 from possible
battery leakage.
Using AC Power
To power the SCP-100 with standard AC power, you
need an optional AC adapter, such as RadioShack
Cat. No. 273-1654.

Cautions:
• The recommended AC adapter supplies 3 volts
and delivers at least 250 milliamps. Its center tip
is set to negative, and its barrel plug correctly fits
the SCP-100’s DC 3V jack. Using an adapter that
does not meet these specifications could dam-
age the SCP-100 or the adapter.
• Always connect the adapter to the SCP-100’s DC
3V jack before you connect it to the AC outlet.
Then disconnect the adapter from the AC outlet
before disconnecting it from the SCP-100.
Follow these steps to power the SCP-100 from a
standard AC outlet.
1. Set the adapter’s voltage switch to 3V.
2. Insert the adapter’s 3.4 mm outer diameter/1.3
mm inner diameter barrel plug into the adapter’s
cord so it reads –TIP.
3. Pull out the attached rubber plug from the SCP-
100’s DC 3V jack.

4. Insert the adapter’s barrel plug into the SCP-
100’s DC 3V jack.

• Internal batteries (if installed) automatically dis-
connect when you plug the AC adapter into the
SCP-100.

• Disconnect the adapter and reinsert the jack’s
rubber plug when you are not using the SCP-
100.
Using Vehicle Battery Power
To power the SCP-100 from your vehicle’s cigarette-
lighter socket, you need an optional DC adapter,
such as RadioShack Cat. No. 270-1560.
Cautions:
• The recommended DC adapter supplies 3 volts
and delivers at least 250 milliamps. Its center tip
is set to negative, and its barrel plug correctly fits
the SCP-100’s DC 3V jack. Using an adapter that
does not meet these specifications could dam-
age the SCP-100 or the adapter.
• Always connect the adapter to the SCP-100’s DC
3V jack before you connect it to the cigarette-
lighter socket. Then disconnect the adapter from
the cigarette-lighter socket before disconnecting
it from the SCP-100.

Follow these steps to power the SCP-100 from your
vehicle’s cigarette-lighter socket.

1. Set the adapter’s voltage switch to 3V.

Notes:
• If the SCP-100 does not operate properly when
you use DC power, be sure the cigarette-lighter
socket is clean and that the adapter’s plug is
pushed all the way into the socket.
• Disconnect the adapter and reinsert the jack’s

100.

CONNECTING THE EARBUDS
OR SPEAKERS
To listen to your SCP-100, you need to connect the
supplied sports earbuds or a pair of amplified speak-
ers (not supplied) with a 1/8-inch mini plug.
Pull out the attached rubber plug from the SCP-100’s
PHONES jack, then plug in the earbuds’ or speakers’
1/8-inch plug.

When you are not using your SCP-100 and earbuds
or speakers are disconnected, insert the rubber plug
back into the PHONES jack to protect against mois-
ture and dust.

Listening Safely
To protect your hearing, follow these guidelines when
you use the earbuds.
• Set the volume to the lowest setting before you
begin listening. After you begin listening, adjust
the volume to a comfortable level.
• Do not listen at extremely high volume levels.
Extended high-volume listening can lead to per-
manent hearing loss.
• Once you set the volume, do not increase it.
Over time, your ears adapt to the volume level,
so a volume level that does not cause discomfort
might still damage your hearing.
Traffic Safety
Do not wear the earbuds while operating a motor ve-
hicle or riding a bicycle. This can cause a traffic haz-
ard and can be illegal in some areas.

Even though some earbuds are designed to let you
hear some outside sounds when listening at normal
volume levels, they still can present a traffic hazard.
USING THE BELT CLIP
For hands-free carrying, slide the belt clip over your
belt.
To remove the belt clip, use a Phillips screwdriver to
loosen the screw holding the clip. Then lift off the clip.

To replace the belt clip, position it as shown, put the
tip of the screw back into the screw hole, and tighten
the screw with a screwdriver.

PLAYING A CASSETTE TAPE
1. Take up any slack in the tape by turning the cas-
sette’s hub with a pencil. Do not touch the
exposed tape.

3. With its open edge facing up and the full reel to
the left, insert the cassette tape into the cassette
guide.

6. Press PLAY to start play.

TAPE TIPS
Tape Quality
For the best performance, use only regular length
(60- or 90-minute) cassette tapes. We do not recom-
mend long-playing cassette tapes, such as C-120s,
because they are extremely thin and can easily tan-
gle in the playback mechanism.
Restoring Tape Tension and Sound
Quality
After you play a cassette tape several times, the tape
might become tightly wound on the reels. This can
cause playback sound quality to deteriorate.
To restore the sound quality, fast-forward the tape
from the beginning to the end of one side, then turn it
over and completely fast-forward the other side.
Then loosen the tape reels by gently tapping each
side of the cassette’s outer shell on a flat surface.

Caution: Be careful not to damage the cassette
when tapping it. Do not touch the exposed tape or al-
low any sharp objects near the cassette.

PERSONAL SAFETY LIGHT
The personal safety light is a bonus packed together
the SCP-100. If you are a walker, runner, or a cyclist,
carry it so you can be seen thousands of feet away
(in clear weather). Clip it on your belt, wear it with the
supplied armband, or secure it on your bicycle with
the supplied mounting bracket.
To power the personal safety light, you need two
AAA batteries. For the best performance, we recom-
mend alkaline batteries, such as RadioShack Cat.
No. 23-555.
Use a flat-blade screwdriver to carefully pry open the
compartment cover. Insert the batteries into the com-
partment, as indicated by the polarity symbols
marked inside. Close the cover.

To turn on the light, press the yellow button on the
back of the belt clip. The light flashes. To make it light
steadily, press the button again. Press it a third time
to turn off the light.

Securing the Light to a Bicycle
If your bicycle has a metal strap below its saddle, you
can use the supplied mounting bracket to mount the
safety light to your bicycle.

1. Use the light’s belt clip to attach it to the mount-
ing bracket.
2. Remove the bolt and nut from the metal strap
below the bicycle’s saddle.
3. Align the hole in the mounting bracket’s tongue
between the two holes in the metal strap.
4. Thread the bolt you removed in Step 2 through
the three holes and replace the nut.
5. Position the mounting bracket so the light is level
with the ground and tighten the nut.

MAINTENANCE
Your Optimus SCP-100 AM/FM Stereo Cassette
Player is an example of superior design and crafts-
manship. The following suggestions will help you
care for the SCP-100 so you can enjoy it for years.
• Keep the SCP-100 dry. If it gets wet, wipe it dry
immediately.
• Use and store the SCP-100 only in normal tem-
perature environments.
• Handle the SCP-100 gently and carefully. Don’t
drop it.
• Keep the SCP-100 away from dust and dirt.
• Occasionally wipe the SCP-100 with a damp
cloth to keep it looking new.
Modifying or tampering with the SCP-100’s internal
components can cause a malfunction and might in-
validate its warranty and void your FCC authorization
to operate it. If your SCP-100 is not performing as it
should, take it to your local RadioShack store for as-
sistance.

CLEANING THE TAPE-HANDLING
PARTS
Dirt, dust, or particles of the tape’s coating can accu-
mulate on the tape head and other parts that the tape
touches. This can reduce the SCP-100’s perfor-
mance.
Follow these steps to clean the tape-handling parts
after about every 20 hours of tape player operation.
1. Open the cassette compartment latch and door.
2. Remove the batteries and disconnect any other
power source.
3. Press PLAY to expose the tape-handling parts.

4. Use a cotton swab dipped in denatured alcohol
or tape head cleaning solution to clean the play-
back head, pinch roller, capstan and tape guide.

5. When you finish cleaning, press STOP, reinstall
batteries (if necessary), and close the cassette
compartment door and latch.
Note: Your local RadioShack store sells a complete
line of cassette player cleaning supplies.

FCC INFORMATION
Your SCP-100 might cause TV or radio interference
even when it is operating properly. To determine
whether your SCP-100 is causing the interference,
turn off your SCP-100. If the interference goes away,
your SCP-100 is causing it. Try to eliminate the inter-
ference by:
• Moving your SCP-100 away from the receiver
• Connecting your SCP-100 to an outlet that is on
a different electrical circuit from the receiver
• Contacting your local RadioShack store for help
