Infrared Tec hnology Overview
Infra red or “IR” tec hnology uses infra red light to tra nsmit a udio without wires. This type of tra nsmission is
a dva nta geous to RF tra nsmission bec a use it is sec ure, it is not susc eptible to RF interferenc e, a nd one rec eiver

System Overview
Key Concepts of Designing a Stationary IR System
Each LT-82 transmitter used can power two LA-140 radiators
1
Ea c h LT-82 tra nsmitter used c a n power up to two LA-140 ra dia tors. If you design a system tha t requires more
ra dia tors tha n the tra nsmitters c a n power, you need to order a dditiona l LA-205 power supplies. Ea c h LA-205
c a n power up to two LA-140 Ra dia tors.
Up to four LT-82 transmitters can be interconnected to create up to a four channel system
2
Up to four LT-82 tra nsmitters c a n be interc onnec ted to c rea te up to a four c ha nnel system. For the system,
there a re two RF outputs provided for c onnec tion to the ra dia tors. Ea c h of these two outputs is referred to a s
the Ra dia tor Da isy C ha in.” RG -58 c oa xia l c a ble is used to interc onnec t the RF in the ra dia tor da isy c ha in. You
c a n c onnec t a s ma ny ra dia tors in the da isy c ha in a s you need.
NOTE: Adding additional transmitters will dec rease radiator c overage.
Each radiator requires one RF (RG-58 coax) connection and one power (CAT-5) connection
3
4
Ea c h ra dia tor requires one RF (RG -58 c oa x) c onnec tion a nd one power (C AT-5) c onnec tion. The RF
c onnec tion c a n c ome from a tra nsmitter or from a nother ra dia tor. The power c onnec tion c a n c ome from
HLWKHUꢁDꢁWUDQVPLWWHUꢂꢁDꢁUDGLDWRUꢁRUꢁIURPꢁDꢁSRZHUꢁVXSSO\ꢁꢏDVꢁORQJꢁDVꢁ\RXꢁGRQ·WꢁH[FHHGꢁWKHꢁFDSDFLW\ꢐꢀ
Listen has provided mounting hardware for most LA-140 mounting situations
To ma ke it ea sy for you to design, spec ify a nd insta ll a system, Listen ha s provided mounting ha rdwa re for
most mounting situa tions inc luding wa ll, c eiling, c orner, desk, tripod a nd mic sta nds. To double the ra dia tion
power you c a n vertic a lly or horizonta lly mount two ra dia tors together using the LA-342 dua l ra dia tor mounting
bra c kets. This inc ludes c oa xia l RF a nd C AT-5 power c a bles.
It is possible that the RF signal arrives to different radiators at different times
5
Due to the higher modula tion frequenc ies, it is possible tha t the RF signa l a rrives to different ra dia tors a t
different times. This dela y c a n c a use the IR c a rriers to a dd “out of pha se” a nd c a use the signa l to drop
out. To solve this problem, Listen ha s provided a dela y c ompensa tion a djustment on ea c h ra dia tor.
This design guide will help you c a lc ula te the setting for this a djustment.
As the number of channels increases, the effective radiated coverage declines
6
7
As the number of c ha nnels inc rea ses, the effec tive ra dia ted c overa ge dec lines. For exa mple, a two
c ha nnel system will ha ve ha lf the c overa ge of a single c ha nnel system. If is importa nt to inc rea se the
number of ra dia tors for multiple c ha nnel systems.
The coverage patterns provide coverage of the system assuming no reflection

a ddition, the ra dia tor ha s been under-ra ted to a c c ount for system degra da tion a s the IR emitting LEDs
a ge over time. It is importa nt to design the system ba sed on these c overa ge pa tterns a nd not by tria l
a nd error. The rea son for this is tha t the c overa ge pa ttern will be stronger when the ra dia tor is new.
A system tha t ha s a dequa te c overa ge toda y ma y not ha ve a dequa te c overa ge in the future if not

Designing a System
It is a good idea to provide over-la pping c overa ge (like in a sprinkling system) of the signa l whenever possible to ensure tha t
the signa l does not ha ve drop outs. In a ddition, you should provide spec ia l ra dia tor c overa ge for sha ded a rea s suc h a s under
a ba lc ony or in the front of a room where the front mounted ra dia tors do not provide enough c overa ge.
The following dia gra ms illustra te these c onc epts.
In this example a total of four radiators, one in each corner, ensures good coverage at all locations and orientations.
Except in small rooms, it is recommended that at least two radiators are used to prevent shading of the IR signal.

If there is an area within a room (such as under a balcony) that is shielded
from the main radiation pattern, you will need to provide additional
radiator(s) to cover this area.

There a re three LEDs loc a ted on the bottom c enter of the front of the ra dia tor. These LEDs a re very useful
for determining the c urrent sta tus of the ra dia tor. See below for possible LED c ombina tions a nd how to
interpret wha t the c ombina tions mea n.
ATTENTION: The LEDs c an be disabled using switc h 1 loc ated on the rear of the radiator. If you believe
there is power to the radiator but there are no LED indic ations on the front of the radiator,
switc h 1 has likely been set to the “OFF” position. Make sure switc h 1 is in the “ONposition
before attempting to c hec k the status of the radiator.

Squelch Setting (Default is 3)
Squelch Setting
The purpose of squelc h is to mute the a udio output of the rec eiver when the signa l from the ra dia tor(s) is
turned off or is too wea k to be rec eived. Without squelc h you would hea r ra dio noise in your ea rphone.
The squelc h on your rec eiver c a n be a djusted so tha t it will mute a t va rying levels of signa l strength. There a re
16 settings tha t the squelc h setting c a n be set to. The lowest squelc h setting (no squelc h) is 0” a nd the
tightest squelc h setting is 15.” The defa ult setting is 3.”
When to Adjust Squelch Setting
For ma ximum ra nge the squelc h setting should be set to a low level (0, 1 or 2). However when setting the
squelc h level low the relia bility of the squelc h setting is c ompromised a nd will lea d to ra dio noise being
hea rd in the ea rphone when signa l strength is low. If no ra dio noise is desired to be hea rd the squelc h
setting should be set to a tighter position. However when setting the squelc h level high the rec eiver will
ha ve reduc ed ra nge due to the a udio being c ut-off when signa l is low. See “Progra mming Unit” sec tion
