Installing the Hardware

You can avoid static discharge by touching a grounded metal object such as
your computer’s case before and during installation of hardware inside your
computer or by wearing a grounding strap connected to ground.

Writer Plus. If your com puter h as an IDE h ard drive or CD-ROM drive,
you can follow th e data cable from th e back of on e of th ose drives an d

Com puter m an ufacturers use a wide variety of labels for IDE con n ectors!
Look on your com puter’s circuit boards for prin tin g iden tifyin g th e

th at you are usin g version 2.23 of th e MSCDEX.EXE file. First, restart
your com puter an d wh en you see “Startin g MS-DOS...” appear on
your m on itor, press F8. Each lin e in your CONFIG.SYS an d
AUTOEXEC.BAT file will load on e at a tim e. Press “Y” un til you see a
lin e con tain in g “MSCDEX.EXE”. Th en press “Y” an d th e version

We do n ot recom m en d usin g h ard drive com pression software. If you use
h ard drive com pression software, it estim ates free h ard drive space based
upon a com pression ratio (often user selectable). Program s m ay ch eck
your h ard drive for space n eeded an d m ay th in k you h ave th e n ecessary
free space. However, depen din g on th e type of files you are copyin g, you
m ay in fact n ot h ave en ough h ard drive space.

Run SCANDISK.EXE an d DEFRAG.EXE on your h ard drive before usin g
your CD-Writer Plus drive for th e first tim e (see your Win dows m an ual

im prove system perform an ce wh ile writin g to an d readin g from th e CD-

h ard drive in order to write successfully to a CD. A buffer un derrun
m essage appears wh en for som e reason th e data stream is in terrupted.
Th is can occur, for exam ple, if an oth er application in terrupts th e writin g
process, or if th e CD-Writer Plus drive’s write speed is set too h igh for th e
speed at wh ich th e h ard drive can accesses an d tran sfer data.

Look for th e MultiRead certification logo on th e CD-ROM’s packagin g or
users guide. Th e drive will be described as MultiRead certified or will list
CD-RW as supported m edia. You can also put a CD-RW disc in your CD-

th rough th e process of preparin g an d ejectin g CD-R an d CD-RW discs.
Preparing a Data CD
Follow th ese steps to start DirectCD an d prepare a blank CD-R or CD-RW
disc for readin g an d writin g data. (If you wan t to write m ore data to a
disc th at you already form atted in DirectCD, see “Writin g More Data to a
DirectCD Disc” on page 5-5.)
1. Start up your com puter.
2. In sert a blank CD-R or CD-RW disc in th e CD-Writer Plus. After a few
secon ds a screen will appear wh ich asks you to “Please select th e type of
CD you wish to create.” (If th e DirectCD Disc Ready win dow appears, th e
disc h as already been prepared, an d you can start writin g data to it.)

NOTE: If no screen appears after about 15 seconds, the disc may not be blank,
or it may have an unreadable format. (See “Fixing an Unreadable Disc” on
page 5-6 for more information.) Or the “Auto insert notification” option may be
disabled (this applies to Windows 95 only). To check this, click Sta rt, move the
mouse pointer over Settings, and click Control Pa nel. In Control Panel,
double-click System and select the Device Ma na ger tab. Double-click the
CD-Writer Plus icon, then select the Settings tab. Click Auto in sert
notifica tion if it does not have a check mark next to it, and click OK. Click
OK on the System Properties dialog box. Then close the Control Panel.
3. Select th e first option : Click h ere to create a data CD th at will be
accessible th rough a drive letter, i.e. as you would use a floppy drive.
Th e Form at Disc screen appears. If you are form attin g a CD-R disc,
con tin ue with th e n ext step. If you are form attin g a CD-RW disc, skip to
step #5.
4. If you are form attin g a CD-R disc, click Next on th e Form at Disc screen
an d skip to step #6.
5. If you are form attin g a CD-RW disc, you can ch oose between two
form attin g option s. To do th is, click th e Advan ced button th at appears
on th e Form at Disc screen . Wh en th e n ext screen appears, select eith er
Fast Form at or Full Form at an d click OK.
We recom m en d th at you select HP fast form at, wh ich lets you start
writin g to th e CD-RW disc alm ost im m ediately wh ile th e disc is
form atted in th e backgroun d. A Full Form at requires you to wait about
an h our un til th e form attin g is com plete before you can write to th e disc.
Click th e Help button for m ore in form ation about th e form attin g
option s.
NOTE: Data is safe if you write it to the disc while HP fast format takes place
in the background. HP fast format will NOT overwrite this data, because the
data is written to sections of the disc that have already been formatted.
6. Wh en th e Nam e Your Disc screen appears, type a n am e for th e disc an d
click Fin ish . Disc form attin g begin s.
Wh en th e DirectCD Disc Ready win dow appears, th e form attin g is
com plete.
NOTE: Formatted CD-RW discs have about 530 MB of available space, while
formatted CD-R discs can store up to 618 MB of data.
7. Click OK.

Writing Data to a DirectCD Disc

disc. To eject a DirectCD disc, follow th ese steps:
1. Push th e eject button on th e fron t of th e CD-Writer Plus, or

Writing More Data to a DirectCD Disc
If you previously form atted a blan k disc for DirectCD use, you can add
m ore data to th e disc un til it is full. To do so, follow th ese steps:
1. In sert th e DirectCD disc in to your CD-Writer Plus.
2. Wait for th e DirectCD Disc Ready win dow to appear. (If th e Make Disc
Writable screen appears, sim ply follow th e on -screen direction s to m ake
th e disc writable.)
3. Click OK an d con tin ue writin g m ore data to th e disc.
Erasing a DirectCD Disc
If you are usin g CD-RW discs in your CD-Writer Plus, you can actually
erase files from th e disc an d use th e recovered space to write n ew files.
However, if you “delete” files from a CD-R disc, th e files becom e in visible
to th e file system (such as Win dows Explorer) but th e space th ey occupy
is n ot m ade available for oth er files. Th us, “deletin g” files from a CD-R
disc will not in crease th e available free space on th e disc.
To erase th e con ten ts on a DirectCD disc, follow th ese steps:
1. Wh ile in Win dows Explorer, select th e file(s) you wan t to erase.
2. Select Delete from th e File m en u.
3. Click Yes to con firm th at you wan t to erase th e files from th e disc.
DirectCD erases th e selected file(s) from th e disc.

Fixing an Unreadable Disc
If n o win dow appears on th e screen after about 15 secon ds wh en you

form at. DirectCD h as a Scan Disc application th at m ay be able to recover
data on th e disc an d allow you to write to it an d read from it again .
Follow th ese steps to use Scan Disc:
1. Double-click th e CD icon
on th e righ t side of th e Win dows taskbar.
If th e disc is un readable, th e Scan Disc win dow will appear.
2. Read th e text in th e win dow, th en click th e Scan Disc button .
3. Wait wh ile Scan Disc repairs th e disc. A m essage will appear on th e screen
wh en Scan Disc is fin ish ed.
NOTE: You can also start ScanDisc through the Start menu. To do this, click
Sta rt on the Windows taskbar. Move the mouse pointer over Programs, HP
CD-Writer Plus, Tools and Information, and Utilities. Then select ScanDisc.

you are copyin g m an y folders an d files.
8. Wh en th e testin g an d copyin g process is com pleted, eject th e CD from
th e drive.

Using the Wizard
Th e easiest way to m ake a m usic CD is to use th e Easy CD Creator
Wizard, wh ich appears wh en you first start Easy CD Creator. Th e Wizard
guides you step-by-step in m akin g a sim ple m usic CD. Follow th ese steps
to m ake a m usic CD with th e Wizard:
1. Start Easy CD Creator if it is n ot already run n in g (see “Startin g
Easy CD Creator” on page 6-1.) Th e Adaptec Easy CD Creator Wizard
appears, as sh own h ere:

As you add tracks to write to th e CD, a list of th ese tracks will appear in
th e m ain Easy CD Creator win dow at th e bottom of th e screen . A fin al

Recording Audio Tracks from an Existing
Music CD
To record son gs (audio tracks) from an existin g m usic CD, you n eed to
first create a CD layout— a file th at con tain s th e list of son gs an d th e
order in wh ich th ey will be recorded—th en record th e layout to a blan k
CD. To do so, follow th ese steps:
1. Start Easy CD Creator, if it is n ot already run n in g.

2. Select New CD Layout from th e File m en u or open an existin g CD
layout.
3. Click th e Audio CD Layout tab:

th e son gs you wan t to record. Th e bottom part is th e Audio CD Layout
win dow, wh ich allows you to view th e con ten ts of th e CD layout. To

your CD-Writer Plus.
NOTE: You can record directly from a CD-ROM drive only if it supports digital
audio extraction. See “Recording from a CD-ROM Drive” in the
Easy CD Creator Online Help.
5. In th e Win dows Explorer section of th e win dow, select th e drive wh ere
th e source CD is located to view th e list of son gs on th e origin al CD.
6. Drag th e son gs th at you wan t to record from Win dows Explorer to th e
Audio CD Layout win dow.

NOTE: To make a jewel case insert that lists the artist, CD title, and songs, see

Recording Wave Files Stored on Your Hard
Drive
To record a m usic CD usin g Wave files (*.wav), th e Wave files m ust be
stored on your h ard drive at 11, 22, 44.1 KHz, 8- or 16-bit, m on o or
stereo. To m ake a Wave file from an existin g CD, see “Pre-recordin g
Audio Tracks to Wave Files” on page 6-6.
NOTE: For best results, record your .wav files at 44.1 KHz, 16-bit stereo. For
more information, see the documentation for your Wave editor program.
To record Wave files stored on your h ard drive to a blan k CD, follow

You can pre-record on e Wave file at a tim e. To pre-record a Wave file from

2. Click th e Audio CD Layout tab in Easy CD Creator.
3. Select th e audio track you wan t to pre-record from Explorer an d drag it

5. Select Pre-record to WAV file from th e Track m en u.
NOTE: Pre-recording audio tracks to Wave files requires approximately 10MB

To open a CD layout you h ave previously saved:

Adding Text
You can add as m uch text as you like to th e jewel case in sert or CD label.
Wh en you add text, you can defin e som e attributes, such as fon t style,
color, an d backgroun d fill color.
To add text, follow th ese steps:

2. Type th e text in th e Text box.

1. Double-click th e text object you wan t to edit.
2. Select th e text attributes you wan t to ch an ge. (See “Addin g Text” on page
7-5.)

Adding Graphics
Th e graph ics used in Easy CD Creator are called OLE objects. OLE is a
Win dows feature th at m ain tain s association s with objects across differen t
application s. For exam ple, if you add an OLE object to a jewel case in sert
or CD label, you can double-click th e object to open th e associated
application so you can edit th e object.
To create an d in sert an OLE object, follow th ese steps:
1. Select In sert an d New Object from th e Edit m en u. A list of Object Types
appears.
2. Select th e Create New option to th e left of th e Object Types list.
Select Create From File in stead if you wan t to im port an existing graph ics
file—for exam ple, a piece of com puter “clip art.”
3. Select from th e Object Type list th e application you will use to create th e
graph ic. For exam ple, select Bitm ap Im age if you wan t to create a
graph ic with Win dows Pain tbrush .
4. Click OK.
5. Create (or select) th e graph ic. Th e way in wh ich you do th is depen ds on
wh ich application you selected. For exam ple:
If you select Bitm ap Im age a sm all win dow will appear in th e m iddle of
th e Jewel Case Layout win dow. Create th e bitm ap im age in th is win dow,

Arranging Track Titles
In form ation about tracks listed in th e Audio CD Layout is autom atically
added to th e Jewel Case Layout win dow. If you delete tracks wh ile
m akin g an audio CD, th e associated in form ation is autom atically
updated in th e Jewel Case Layout tab.
Deletin g tracks wh ile preparin g to m ake an audio CD m ay cause blan k
rows to appear in th e tracks list of th e Jewel Case Layout tab. Th erefore, if
you m ake ch an ges to th e track list th at affect th e position of th e tracks
on th e Jewel Case Layout win dow, Easy CD Creator asks if you wan t th e
tracks autom atically reposition ed.
Th e Jewel Case Layout tab provides som e com m an ds th at let you create

CD Copier is a con ven ien t tool for m akin g copies of your CDs. Th e m ost

What Types of CDs Can I Copy?
You can use CD Copier to m ake backup copies of alm ost an y type of CD.

Starting CD Copier
Follow th ese steps to start CD Copier:
1. Start up your com puter.
2. In sert a blank CD-R or CD-RW disc in th e CD-Writer Plus. After a few
secon ds a screen will appear wh ich asks you to “Please select th e type of
CD you wish to create.”
NOTE: If no screen appears after about 15 seconds, you may have inserted a
disc that is already formatted. Remove the disc and insert a blank disc. Or the
“Auto insert notification” option may be disabled (this applies to Windows 95
only). To check this, click Sta rt, move the mouse pointer over Settings, and
click Control Pa nel. In Control Panel, double-click System and select the
Device Ma na ger tab. Double-click the icon for the CD-Writer Plus, then select

To m ake a backup copy of a CD, follow th ese steps:

copy directly from a CD-ROM drive.

Welcome to HP Simple Trax
HP Sim ple Trax protects your data by copyin g files an d folders to a CD
an d savin g in form ation about th em in th e Sim ple Trax in form ation vault
on your h ard drive. Th is m akes it easy for you to fin d an d retrieve an y
protected version of a file you n eed.
HP Sim ple Trax is design ed to work just th e way your Win dows Explorer
works. You can drag an d drop item s or use th e m en us. You can also click
on item s with th e righ t m ouse button to use th e popup m en us. Use your
favorite m eth od or try a n ew on e.
Th e in stallation program will place th e HP Sim ple Trax icon on th e
desktop an d un der My Com puter. Wh en you open or explore th e Sim ple
Trax icon , in stead of folders, you see icon s represen tin g all th e CDs you
h ave used to protect your files with HP Sim ple Trax. You can see wh ich
files an d folders are in each CD with out puttin g a CD in your CD-Writer.

menus as described above, drag and drop to the HP Simple Trax icon, or copy
and paste on the HP Simple Trax icon.

subdirectories in th e selected folder. (Th is option is useful on ly if you
h ave selected on e or m ore folders.)
Click Copy files to an altern ate location an d type th e desired drive
an d path or click Browse an d select th e n ew location from th e list of
folders on your h ard disk(s).
NOTE: If you choose to retrieve the selected files or folders to an alternate
location, all of the retrieved files are removed from the original folders and
subfolders and are placed in the alternate location. If you want to keep the
directory information either drag and drop the items or use copy and paste.
7. Click OK to con tin ue.
8. In sert th e correct CD if it is n ot already in your CD-Writer Plus. HP
Sim ple Trax prom pts you for th e required CD.
9. Con firm th at you wan t to replace existin g files, if prom pted to do so.
HP Sim ple Trax retrieves th e m ost recen t version s of files th at you
selected. In order to do th is HP Sim ple Trax m ay prom pt you for differen t
CDs depen din g wh ere th e m ost recen t version was copied.
TIP: If you are using multiple CDs disable the DirectCD banner.
You can also retrieve earlier version s of a file usin g th e View Version s
option . Th is option will brin g up th e File Protection History dialog box,
wh ich lists all th e protected version s of th e file. Th e m ost com m on
reason for retrievin g an older version of a file is to un do m ajor revision s
or ch an ges.
To display th e File Protection History dialog box run Explorer, click th e
file on your h ard disk th at you wan t to exam in e with th e righ t m ouse

files on th e CD an d stores th at in form ation on your h ard drive. Th is
in form ation m akes it possible for you to easily fin d an d retrieve files an d
to browse th e con ten ts of th e CD with out puttin g th e CD in your CD-

HP Disaster Recovery is an application th at will h elp you to recover your
data an d operatin g system after a h ard drive failure. It is im portan t th at
you create a Disaster Recovery Set as soon as possible. Sh ould a disaster
occur, th e in form ation in th e Disaster Recovery Set will en able you to
return your system to th e state it was in before th e h ard drive failure.
Before recoverin g with HP Disaster Recovery, you sh ould first decide if
an oth er recovery m eth od is possible. For exam ple, if th e problem appears
to be associated with th e Win dows operatin g system , such as a corrupt
registry, try to recover by followin g th e steps outlin ed in your Microsoft
Win dows User’s Man ual before attem ptin g th e followin g procedures.
Getting Started
Th e first step in securin g th e data on your system is creatin g th e Disaster
Recovery (DR) Set. Th e DR Set will con tain th e in form ation n ecessary to
recover your system . Th rough out th is ch apter, we will refer to th e disks,
diskettes an d discs th at m ake up th e Disaster Recovery Set. For m ore
in form ation on th ese term s, please see th e “HP Disaster Recovery
Glossary” on page 10-8.
Th e Disaster Recovery Wizard will guide you th rough th e steps required
to create th e DR Set with easy-to-follow in struction s for protectin g your

NOTE: This section applies to Windows 95 and Windows 98 only.
After you h ave created th e Disaster Recovery Set, you will be asked if you
would like to test th e DR Set. Testin g th e DR Set is very sim ilar to
perform in g an actual recovery; h owever, be sure to stop before recoverin g
your data. Th is test is to verify th at your drive is respon din g properly.
To t est you r Disa st er Recover y Set :
1. Follow steps 1 th rough 7 for recoverin g your data in th e Data Recovery
section . See “Recoverin g Your Data” on page 10-4.
WARNING: Do not continue to step 8 when testing the DR Set. By pressing
Enter, as directed in step 8, you would be recovering the data from the diskette
which would overwrite the data on that drive. Press Esc to cancel, or remove the
diskette and restart your computer.
2. If you do n ot receive th e m essages listed in th e steps for data recovery,
follow th e direction s for creatin g an oth er Disaster Recovery Set. See

recovered. If you wish to view th is file, you m ust first exit th e program by
pressin g th e Esc key twice, th en typin g EDIT REPORT.TXT. After
readin g th e text, press Alt+F, th en press X to exit th e editor.
Your recovery is com plete. Rem ove an y diskettes an d discs from your
m ach in e an d restart your com puter.
NOTE: It may be necessary to restart your computer more than once if any
hardware in your system has changed since your DR Set was created.

What Affects System Performance
How well your com puter fun ction s with th e CD-Writer Plus drive,
particularly h ow fast it writes data to a CD, depen ds on a n um ber of
factors. Som e of th ese factors are listed below.
Processor (CPU). Th e type an d speed of your processor greatly affects th e
speed at wh ich your com puter tran sfers data to an d from th e CD-Writer
Plus drive. If th e processor speed is too slow, you m ay h ave to write at 1x
speed.
RAM. Your com puter m ust h ave en ough m em ory available to h an dle its
operatin g system , th e CD-Writer Plus application s, an d th e data you are
tran sferrin g to an d from CDs. Th e system sh ould n ot h ave to swap data
to an d from th e h ard drive.
Your Hard Drive. Th e speed at wh ich your h ard drive accesses an d
tran sfers data (its access tim e an d tran sfer rate) affects perform an ce.
Newer h ard drives, th ose with a storage capacity greater th an 528 MB, are
fast en ough to h an dle th e CD-Writer Plus drive’s 2x write speed.
