Device Performance
USB (Un iversal Serial Bus) devices such as your n ew HP CD-Writer Plus
are so easy to discon n ect an d recon n ect th at you m ay wan t to use oth er
devices of th is type. Th e in form ation below can h elp you m ain tain th e
CD-Writer’s perform an ce wh en oth er USB devices are con n ected to your
com puter.
Fast USB devices con n ected to your com puter (such as th e CD-Writer
Plus, scan n ers, prin ters an d speakers) work well as lon g as th ey are used
on e at a tim e. However, th ere is a drastic reduction in perform an ce wh en
two or m ore of th ese devices are used sim ultan eously.
Typically, slow USB devices con n ected to your com puter (such as m ice,
keyboards, an d joysticks) do n ot decrease th e perform an ce of oth er slow
USB devices. Th ey can , h owever, affect th e perform an ce of fast devices
wh en a slow an d a fast device are used sim ultan eously.
Maintaining the Data Flow to the Drive
Th e CD-Writer Plus requires a con stan t stream of in form ation from th e
com puter in order to create CDs with th e Easy CD Creator or CD Copier
software. If th e stream of in form ation is in terrupted (called a buffer
un derrun ) th e CD can be ruin ed.
CAUTION: DO NOT USE, CONNECT or TURN ON any other USB
device while creating a CD with Easy CD Creator or CD Copier
software.
Th e DirectCD software is n ot susceptible to buffer un derrun s. To
un derstan d wh en to use th e differen t software program s, refer to section
on m akin g CDs th at begin s on page 4.

Th e USB cable sh ipped with th e CD-Writer Plus is a h igh -quality cable.
Do n ot replace it with oth er cables or use cable exten ders. Usin g lower
quality cables could adversely affect drive perform an ce.
Choosing a Hub
A h ub allows you to con n ect m ultiple USB devices to your com puter. To
operate properly, th e CD-Writer Plus requires a self-powered (also kn own
as active) h ub. Th is type of h ub en sures th at all th e devices on th e h ub
receive th e n ecessary power.
Reconnecting the Drive
On ce you h ave in stalled th e drivers for th e CD-Writer Plus you can
con n ect or discon n ect th e drive at an y tim e. Win dows will recogn ize th e
device an d load th e drivers. It is n ot n ecessary to restart Win dows to
recon n ect your drive.

With CD-RW discs you can write, erase, an d rewrite files easily from your
software application s or from th e Win dows Explorer. Sin ce n ot all CD-
ROM drives can read CD-RW discs, th ese discs are better suited for use on
your own com puter.

Virtually all CD-ROM drives an d operatin g system s (Win dows 95,
Win dows 98, Win dows NT, Win dows 3.x, an d DOS) can read CD-R discs
m ade with Easy CD Creator (Data).
To start th e Easy CD Creator (Data) software in sert a blan k CD-R disc in
th e CD-Writer Plus. From th e screen th at appears select th e option th at

When is the DirectCD Software Useful?
With DirectCD you can sim ply drag an d drop files on to th e CD-Writer
Plus icon to m ake CDs. Use DirectCD wh en you wan t to create data CDs
(n ot audio) to use on your own com puter.
Wh en you save to a disc with in a software application or Win dows
Explorer, Direct CD copies th e file directly to th e disc.
DirectCD allows you to organ ize CD-R discs wh en you eject th em so th ey
can be read by m ost CD-ROM drives un der Win dows 95, Win dows 98,
an d Win dows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 or later.

Makin g an audio CD m ay in volve swappin g CDs in an d out of drives
m an y tim es. For exam ple, if you m ake th e CD usin g your CD-Writer Plus
as both th e source an d destin ation drive, you will n eed to swap CDs
every tim e a n ew track is copied to th e CD-Writer Plus drive.
To m in im ize th e n um ber of tim es you swap CDs:
1. Copy th e tracks to your h ard drive usin g Easy CD Creator. Th is is
called pre-recordin g audio tracks to wave files.
Approxim ately 10 MB of space on th e h ard drive are required for each
m in ute of m usic.
2. On ce all th e tracks are on your h ard drive, copy th em to th e CD usin g
Easy CD Creator.
Th e User’s Guide provides a step by step description of h ow to copy th e
audio tracks to th e h ard drive an d th en on to a CD. Click St a r t on th e
taskbar, point to P r ogr a m s, H P CD-W r it er P lu s, In for m a t ion , an d

Can I Use the New 80 Minute Audio CDs?
HP does n ot curren tly support th e n ew 80 m in ute audio CDs even
th ough th e HP CD-Writer Plus an d th e in cluded software are capable of
usin g th em . Th e m an ufacturin g process for creatin g 80 m in ute CD-R
discs is extrem ely difficult an d th e resultin g discs do n ot con sisten tly
m eet HP’s stan dards for reliability at th e tim e of th is prin tin g.
