Thank you for purchasing the VTech® Slide & Talk Smart PhoneTM  
!
The Slide & Talk Smart PhoneTM is a fun, educational toy flip-phone  
with two great ways to play: Phone Mode, where you can learn numbers  
through role-play fun, and Message Mode, where you can learn letters  
while using the ABC keypad. With 8 fun-filled activities, a “friends”  
phonebook, great pre-set messages and fun melodies, the Slide & Talk  
Smart PhoneTM makes learning fun.

WARNING: All packing materials such as tape, plastic sheets, wire  
ties and tags are not part of this toy, and should be  
discarded for your child’s safety.  
DEMO STRIP REMOVAL:  
When the product is taken out of the packaging, please remove the  
demo strip from the unit to activate normal play mode.  
NOTE: Please keep instruction manual as it contains important  
information.  
GETTING STARTED  
BATTERY INSTALLATION  
1. Make sure the unit is turned OFF.  
2. Locate the battery cover on the bottom  
of the unit. Use a screwdriver to loosen  
the screw.  
3. Install 3 new “AAA” (LR03/AM-4)  
batteries following the diagram inside  
the battery box. (The use of new,  
alkaline batteries is recommended for  
maximum performance.)  
4. Replace the battery cover and tighten the screw to secure.  
BATTERY NOTICE  
The use of new alkaline batteries is recommended for maximum  
performance.

Non-rechargeable batteries are not to be recharged.

Rechargeable batteries are to be removed from the toy before being  
charged (if removable).  
Rechargeable batteries are only to be charged under adult  
supervision (if removable).  
Do not mix old and new batteries.  
Do not mix batteries of different types: alkaline, standard (carbon-  
zinc) or rechargeable (nickel-cadmium).  
Only batteries of the same or equivalent type as recommended are  
to be used.  
Batteries are to be inserted with the correct polarity.  
Exhausted batteries are to be removed from the toy.  
The supply terminals are not to be short-circuited.  
The toy is not to be connected to more than the recommended  
number of power supplies.  
Do not dispose of batteries in fire.  
WE DO NOT RECOMMEND THE USE OF RECHARGEABLE  
BATTERIES.  
PRODUCT FEATURES  
1. ON/OFF BUTTON  
Press the On/Off Button to turn the unit on.  
Press it again to turn the unit off.  
2. PHONE MODE/MESSAGE MODE  
The toy is automatically in Phone Mode when  
the keypad is closed.  
Slide the number keypad over to open the

ABC keypad. The toy will then be in Message Mode and the visual  
angle of the screen will change for easier viewing.  
3. 10-NUMBER BUTTONS  
Press the Number Buttons to learn numbers  
and count objects or answer the questions in  
the number-related activity.  
4. 26-LETTER BUTTONS  
Press the Letter Buttons to learn letters,  
or answer questions in the letter-related  
activities.  
5. OK BUTTON  
Press the OK Button to confirm the choice  
in the number-related activity or to send the  
message that you’ve typed or selected.  
6. BACKGROUND MUSIC ON/OFF  
BUTTON  
Press the Background Music On/Off Button  
to turn the background music on or off. The  
unit is set to play with background music  
turned on by default.  
7. AUTOMATIC SHUT-OFF  
To preserve battery life, the VTech® Slide & Talk Smart PhoneTM  
will automatically turn off after several minutes without input. The

unit can be turned on again by pressing the On/Off Button.

ACTIVITIES  
Phone Mode  
Activity: Receive a Call  
Somebody is calling! Press the green phone  
call button to answer the call when the phone  
is ringing.  
Activity: Make a Call  
Call your pal! Press the green phone call button  
at any time to call one of your pals whenever  
you want!  
Activity: My Ring Tone  
Press the blue ring tone button to hear some fun  
songs and watch the friendly owl dance.  
Activity: Phone Book  
Press the green phone book button to scroll  
through your pals and hear some fun information  
about each of them.  
Activity: Number Explore  
Press any of the 0-9 number buttons to learn the  
numbers and count some objects.

Message Mode  
Activity: Message Fun  
You’ve got a message from your pal! Watch  
the message, and then press the red message  
button to choose a pre-set message to send  
back, or press the Letter Buttons to type your  
own message and then press the OK Button  
to send it.  
Activity: Capital Letters  
Press any of the A-Z letter buttons to call the  
A-Z letter.  
Activity: Quiz Time  
Press the green quiz button to enter Quiz Time.  
Different questions will appear on screen and you  
will have to use the letter and number buttons  
to answer them.  
CARE & MAINTENANCE  
1. Keep the unit clean by wiping it with a slightly damp cloth.  
2. Keep the unit out of direct sunlight and away from any direct heat  
source.  
3. Remove the batteries when the unit is not in use for an extended  
period of time.  
4. Do not drop the unit on hard surfaces and do not expose the unit to  
moisture or water.

TROUBLESHOOTING  
If for some reason the program/activity stops working or malfunctions,  
please follow these steps:  
1. Please turn the unit OFF.  
2. Interrupt the power supply by removing the batteries.  
3. Let the unit stand for a few minutes, then replace the batteries.  
4. Turn the unit ON. The unit should now be ready to play again.  
5. If the product still does not work, replace with a new set of  
batteries.  
If the problem persists, please call our Consumer Services Department  
at 1-800-521-2010 in the U.S. or 1-877-352-8697 in Canada, and a  
service representative will be happy to help you.  
Note:  
When you turn on the unit after this product is removed from the  
packaging, the volume in phone mode will be reduced to a level that  
complies with safety regulations for ‘close-to-the-ear’ toys for children  
ages 2+. The volume level of the product in phone mode is set higher  
when inside the packaging to enable the customer to hear the product  
demonstration better while in the store.
