Notes on connecting cables
Be sure to disconnect the AC power cord (mains lead) before connecting cables.
It is not necessary to connect all of the cables. Connect cables according to the availability of jacks on the
connected device.
Use a High Speed HDMI cable. 1080p, Deep Color (Deep Colour), 4K or 3D images may not be displayed
properly if you use a Standard HDMI cable.
We do not recommend using an HDMI-DVI conversion cable. If you connect an HDMI-DVI conversion cable

Notes on sound fields
Depending on the speaker pattern settings, some sound fields may not be available.
You cannot select [PLIIx Movie] (*) and [PLIIx Music] (*) at the same time.
[PLIIx Movie] (*) and [PLIIx Music] (*) are available only when the speaker pattern is set to a setting with surround
back speaker(s).
The sound fields for music and movies do not work in the following cases:
DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD High Resolution Audio or Dolby TrueHD with a sampling frequency higher than
48 kHz are being received.
[Analog Direct] is selected.
[PLII Movie], [PLII Music], [PLIIx Movie] (*), [PLIIx Music] (*), [Neo:6 Cinema] (*) and [Neo:6 Music] (*) do not
work when the speaker pattern is set to [2/0] or [2/0.1].
When one of the sound fields for music is selected, no sound is output from the subwoofer if all of the
speakers are set to [Large] in the Speaker Settings menu. However, the sound will be output from the
subwoofer if:
the digital input signal contains LFE signals.
the front or surround speakers are set to [Small].
[Multi Stereo], [PLII Movie], [PLII Music], [PLIIx Movie] (*), [PLIIx Music] (*), [HD-D.C.S.] or [Portable Audio] is
selected.
* For STR-DH750 only
If you connect a subwoofer
This receiver will generate a low frequency signal for output to the subwoofer when there is no LFE signal,
which is a low-pass sound effect output from a subwoofer to a 2-channel signal. However, the low frequency
signal is not generated for [Neo:6 Cinema] (*) or [Neo:6 Music] (*) if all of the speakers are set to [Large].
In order to take full advantage of the Dolby Digital bass redirection circuitry, we recommend setting the
subwoofer’s cutoff frequency as high as possible.
* For STR-DH750 only

Adjusting the speaker size (Manual Setup)
You can adjust the size of each speaker (front left/right, front high left/right (*1), center, surround left/right and
surround back left/right (*1)).
*1
for STR-DH750 only
1. Select [Settings] - [Speaker Settings] from the home menu.
2. Select [Manual Setup].
3. Select the speaker on the screen for which you want to adjust the size.
4. Select [Size], then press
/
to adjust the size.
Large: If you connect large speakers that will effectively reproduce bass frequencies, select [Large].
Select [Large] usually.
Small: If the sound is distorted or you hear a lack of surround effects when using multi channel
surround sound, select [Small]. You can activate the bass redirection circuitry and output the bass
frequencies of each channel from the subwoofer or other [Large] speakers.
Note
This function does not work when [Analog Direct] is being used.
Hint
The [Large] and [Small] settings for each speaker determine whether the internal sound processor will cut
the bass signal from that channel.
When the bass is cut from a channel, the bass redirection circuitry sends the corresponding bass frequencies
to the subwoofer or other [Large] speakers.
However, since bass sound has a certain amount of directionality, it is best not to cut it if possible. Therefore,
you can set even a small speaker to [Large] if you want to output the bass frequencies from that speaker. On
the other hand, if you are using a large speaker but prefer not to output bass frequencies from that speaker,
set it to [Small].
If the overall sound level is lower than you prefer, set all speakers to [Large]. If there is not enough bass, you
can use the equalizer to boost the bass levels.
The surround back speakers will be set to the same setting as that of the surround speakers.
When the front speakers are set to [Small], the center, surround, and surround back/front high (*2) speakers
are also automatically set to [Small].
If you do not use the subwoofer, the front speakers are automatically set to [Large].
[Size] cannot be set when headphones are connected.

Auto Format Direct (A.F.D.)/2-channel sound mode
Auto Format Direct (A.F.D.) mode: This mode allows you to listen to higher-fidelity sound and select the
decoding mode for listening to a 2-channel stereo or monaural sound as multi-channel sound.
2-channel sound mode: You can switch the output sound to 2-channel sound regardless of the recording
formats of the software you are using, the playback device connected, or the sound field settings of the
receiver.
A.F.D. Auto (A.F.D. AUTO):
Presets the sound as it was recorded/encoded without adding any surround effects.
However, for USA and Canada models, this receiver will generate a low-frequency signal for output to the
subwoofer when there is no LFE signals.
Multi Stereo (MULTI ST.):
Outputs 2-channel left/right or monaural signals from all speakers. However, sound may not be output from
certain speakers depending on the speaker settings.
2ch Stereo (2CH ST.):
The receiver outputs the sound from the front left/right speakers only. There is no sound from the subwoofer.
Standard 2-channel stereo sources completely bypass the sound field processing and multi-channel surround
formats are downmixed to 2-channels.
Analog Direct (A. DIRECT):
You can switch the audio of the selected input to 2-channel analog input. This function enables you to enjoy
high-quality analog sources.
Only the volume and front speaker level can be adjusted when using this function.
Note
You cannot select [Analog Direct] while using the BD/DVD, GAME, or USB function.
[Multi Stereo] does not work when multi-channel audio signals are being received.

Movie mode
You can take advantage of surround sound simply by selecting one of the receiver’s pre-programmed sound
fields. They bring the exciting and powerful sound of movie theaters into your home.
HD-D.C.S.:
HD Digital Cinema Sound (HD-D.C.S.) is Sony’s new innovative home theater technology using the latest
acoustic and digital signal processing technologies. It is based on the precise response measurement data of a
mastering studio.
With this mode, you can enjoy Blu-ray and DVD movies at home with not only a high-quality of sound but also
the best sound ambience, just as the movie’s sound engineer intended in the mastering process.
Dynamic: This setting is suitable for an environment which is reverberant but lacks a spacious feel (where
sound absorption is not sufficient). It emphasizes the reflection of sound and reproduces the sound of a
large, classic movie theater. This emphasizes the spacious feel of a dubbing theater and creates a unique
acoustic field.
Theater: This setting is suitable for a general living room. It reproduces the reverberation of sound just like in
a movie theater (dubbing theater). It is most appropriate for watching content recorded on a Blu-ray Disc
when you want the atmosphere of a movie theater.
Studio: This setting is suitable for a living room with the appropriate sound devices. It reproduces the
reverberation of sound provided when a theatrical sound source is remixed for a Blu-ray Disc to a volume
level suitable for home use. The level of reflection and reverberation of sound is kept to a minimum, while
dialogues and surround effects are reproduced vividly.
PLII Movie (PLII MV):
Performs Dolby Pro Logic II Movie mode decoding. This setting is ideal for movies encoded in Dolby Surround.
In addition, this mode can reproduce sound in 5.1-channel format when watching videos of overdubbed or old
movies.
PLIIx Movie (PLIIX MV) (for STR-DH750 only):
Performs Dolby Pro Logic IIx Movie mode decoding. This setting expands Dolby Pro Logic II Movie or Dolby
Digital 5.1 to 7.1 discrete movie channels.
Neo:6 Cinema (NEO6 CIN) (for STR-DH750 only):
Performs DTS Neo:6 Cinema mode decoding. Sources recorded in 2-channel format are enhanced up to 7
channels.
