Warning:
ꢀGeneral
The voltage used must be the same as that specified by this unit. Using this product
with a higher voltage other than that specified is dangerous and may result in a fire or
other types of accident, causing damage. SHARP will not be held responsible for any
damage resulting from the use of this unit with a voltage other than that specified.
ꢁUse the unit on a firm, level surface free from vibration.
ꢁKeep the unit away from direct sunlight, strong magnetic fields, excessive dust,
humidity and electronic/electrical equipment (home computers, facsimiles, etc.)
which generate electrical noise.
ꢁDo not expose the unit to moisture, to temperatures higher than 60˚C (140˚F) or to
extremely low temperatures.
ꢀCooling fan
This unit is fitted with a cooling fan at the rear for improved cooling. Do not cover the
opening in this section with any obstacles.
ꢁIf the unit does not work properly, unplug and plug it
in again. Then turn on the unit.
ꢁIn case of an electrical storm, unplug the unit for safe-
ty.
ꢁHold the AC power plug by the head when removing
it from the wall socket, as pulling the lead can
damage internal wires.
ꢁThe AC power plug is used as disconnect device and
shall always remain readily operable.
Cooling fan
Caution:
ꢁDo not remove the outer cover, as this may result in electric shock. Refer internal
service to your local SHARP service facility.
ꢁThe ventilation should not be impeded by covering the ventilation openings with
items, such as newspapers, tablecloths, curtains, etc.
ꢁNo naked flame sources, such as lighted candles, should be placed on the
apparatus.
ꢁThe unit will get warm whilst being used. Do not touch the warm areas of the unit
for prolonged periods to avoid injury.
ꢁThis unit is equipped with a special function which protects the amplifier circuit from
damages. When it is activated, the sound switch is turned off. In this case, set the
unit to the stand-by mode and turn on again.
ꢁAttention should be drawn to the environmental aspects of battery disposal.
ꢁThis unit should only be used within the range of 5˚C - 35˚C (41˚F - 95˚F).
ꢀVolume control
The sound level at a given volume setting depends on speaker efficiency, location,
and various other factors. It is advisable to avoid exposure to high volume levels. Do
not turn the volume on to full at switch on and listen to music at moderate levels.

System connections
ꢀInstalling the main unit and the subwoofer ꢀAerial connection
Supplied FM aerial:
1. Pull up both speakers outwards.
Connect the FM aerial wire to the FM 75 OHMS socket

and position the FM aerial wire in the direction where
the strongest signal can be received.
2. Pre-faster the screw to the speaker box.
Note:
Placing the aerial on the unit or near the AC power lead may cause noise pickup.
Place the aerial away from the unit for better reception.

Use an external FM aerial if you require better reception. Consult your dealer.
3. Snap the metal frame onto the screw and fasten the screw fully. Then turn the unit.

Make sure to leave the AC power lead disconnected when connecting the sub-
woofer.
ꢀUsing other subwoofer
You can connect a subwoofer with an amplifier to the SUBWOOFER PRE OUT sock-

1. Please ensure that the equipment is positioned in a well-ventilated area and ensure
that there is at least 10 cm (4") of free space along the sides and back of the
equipment.

Falling prevention
Safety wires are useful to prevent the TV from falling off in case of earthquake occurance.

After checking all the connections have been made correctly, connect the AC power

Remote control
Notes concerning use:
ꢀBattery installation
Use 2 "AAA" size batteries (UM-4, R03, HP-16 or similar).
Batteries are not included.
ꢁReplace the batteries if the operating distance is reduced or if the operation be-
comes erratic.
ꢁPeriodically clean the transmitter on the remote control and the sensor on the unit
with a soft cloth.
ꢁExposing the sensor on the unit to strong light may interfere with operation. Change
the lighting or the direction of the unit.
1 Open the battery cover.
ꢁKeep the remote control away from moisture, heat, shock, and vibrations.
ꢀTest of the remote control
Point the remote control directly at the remote sensor on the unit.
The remote control can be used within the range shown below:
Press the ON/STAND-BY button. Does the power turn on? Now, you can enjoy your
system.

General control
ꢀVolume control
Main unit operation:
Press the VOL + button to increase the volume
and the VOL - button for decreasing.
Remote control operation:

ꢀMuting
The volume is muted temporarily when pressing
the MUTE button on the remote control.
Press again to restore the volume.
Notes:
ꢁWhen you press another button, muting is cancelled. However, it is not cancelled if
a button on the TV or DVD player is pressed or the DISPLAY button is pressed with
the SHIFT button down.
ꢁWhen the unit is turned off and back on again, muting is cancelled.
ꢀSubwoofer level control
The subwoofer level can be adjusted.
To increase the level, hold down the SHIFT button
and press the SUBWOOFER LEVEL + button.
To decrease the level, hold down the SHIFT button
and press the SUBWOOFER LEVEL - button.

Notes:
ꢁWhen sound from the subwoofer is distorted, decrease the subwoofer level.
ꢁWhen changing the subwoofer level, the output level of the SUBWOOFER PRE
OUT is also changed.
ꢀTo change the display brightness (2 levels)
You can switch the display brightness by pressing
the DIMMER button.
ꢀDisplay control
This unit clock can be display during power On/Off.
Display clock:
Whilst holding down the SHIFT button, press the
DISPLAY button. The time display will appear for
about 5 seconds.
Notes:
ꢁIf clock not being set before, "ADJUST" will be display for a whilst.
ꢁWhilst the time display (within 5 seconds), press the DISPLAY button whilst holding
down the SHIFT button again to cancel the time display manually.

Setting the clock
By setting the unit to the correct time, you can use it not only as a clock but also for
timer playback.
3 Hold down the SHIFT button and
press the or button to adjust the
hour and then press the ENTER
button.
ꢁPress the or button once to advance the time by 1 hour. Hold it down to
advance continuously.
ꢁWhen the 12-hour display is selected, "AM" will change automatically to "PM".
4 Hold down the SHIFT button and
press the or button to adjust the
minutes and then press the ENTER
button.
ꢁPress the or button once to advance the time by 1 minute. Hold it down
to advance continuously.
ꢁThe hour will not advance even if minutes advance from "59" to "00".
ꢁThe clock starts from "0" second (seconds are not displayed).
ꢁThe time disappears after approx.5 seconds.
You can set the clock even when the unit is in the stand-by mode.
In this example, the clock is set for the 24-hour (0:00) display
To confirm the time display:
Hold down the SHIFT button and press the DISPLAY button.
The time display will appear for about 5 seconds.
1 Hold down the SHIFT button and press the CLOCK button. Within
5 seconds, press the or button to select CLOCK ADJUST and
then press the ENTER button.
Note:
The "ADJUST" or time will flash at the push of the SHIFT and DISPLAY buttons when
the AC power supply is restored after a power failure or unplugging the unit.
To readjust the clock:
Perform "Setting the clock" from step 1. If the "ADJUST" is not flashing in step 1, step

The Dolby Virtual Speaker creates multichannel-like sound effects.
The Dolby Virtual Speaker (DVS) creates virtual surrounds comparable to the 5.1ch
sound produced by the 2.1ch speaker.
Compared with the cinema mode, the bass sound level is slightly re-
duced.
When setting DVS to "ON" for 2 channel stereo signals, Dolby Pro Logic (see page
25) brings out virtual sound effects through the signals converted into 5.1ch.
Press the

The Dolby Pro Logic indicator also lights up if 2ch sound signals are
detected.

To receive an FM stereo transmission:

ꢀTo recall a memorised station
Hold down the SHIFT button and press the PRESET ( or ) button for less than
0.5 seconds to select the desired station.
You can store 40 FM stations in memory and recall them at the push of a button. (Pre-

The backup function protects the memorised stations for a few hours should there be
a power failure or the AC power lead become disconnected.

Using the Radio Data System (RDS)
RDS is a broadcasting service which a growing number of FM stations provide.
ꢀInformation provided by RDS
These FM stations send additional signals along with their regular programme
signals. They send their station names, and information about the type of pro-
gramme such as sport, music, etc.
Press the SHIFT button and then the RDS DISPLAY button. The display changes
as follows each time they are pressed.
When tuned to an RDS station, "RDS" and the station name will be displayed.
"TP" (Traffic Programme) will appear on the display when the received broadcast
carries traffic information, and "TA" (Traffic Announcement) will appear whilst a traffic
information is on air.
"PTYI" (Dynamic PTY Indicator) will appear whilst the Dynamic PTY station is
received.

Press the RDS ASPM button whilst it is scanning for stations.
The stations which are already stored in memory will be kept there.
ꢀUsing the Auto Station Programme
Memory (ASPM)
Whilst in the ASPM operation mode, the tuner will automatically search for new RDS
stations. Up to 40 stations can be stored.
Notes:
ꢁIf the same station is broadcasting on different frequencies, the strongest
frequency will be stored in memory.
If you have already stored some stations in memory, the number of new stations you
can store will be less.
ꢁAny station which has the same frequency as one stored in memory will not be
stored.
ꢁIf 40 stations have already been stored in memory, the scan will be aborted. If you
want to redo the ASPM operation, erase the preset memory.
ꢁIf no stations have been stored in memory, "END" will appear for about 4 seconds.
ꢁIf the RDS signals are very weak, station names may not be stored in memory.

the RDS reception function may not work properly.
ꢁWhen you receive an RDS station whose signal is too weak, information like the

After completing the setting
To check the timer setting:
1 Whilst in the timer playback stand-by mode, press the SHIFT and TIMER buttons.
When the timer setting is completed:
The unit is in the timer playback
stand-by mode.
2 Within 10 seconds, hold down the SHIFT button and press the or button to
select "TIMER CAL", and press the ENTER button.
The unit returns to the timer playback stand-by mode after the setting contents
are displayed in order.
TIMER
Cancelling the timer playback:
Timer playback is cancelled by turning the power on whilst in the timer playback
stand-by mode. The same operation can be performed in the following procedure
without turning the power on.
When the start time is reached:
Unit starts automatically and the volume
increases gradually.
Timer play indicator flashes
The unit is operated by the timer.
1 Press the SHIFT and TIMER buttons.
"TIMER OFF" will appear.
2 Within 10 seconds, press the SHIFT and ENTER buttons. Timer playback will
be cancelled ( the contents of the setting will not be cancelled.)
Reusing the timer:
Using the same setting;
The timer setting will be memorised once it is entered. To reuse the same setting,
perform the following operations.
When the finish time is reached:
The unit is set to the power stand-by mode automatically.
1 Turn the power on and press the SHIFT and TIMER buttons.
"TIMER STANDBY" will appear. If it does not appear, set the unit to the correct
time.
2 Within 10 seconds, press the SHIFT and ENTER buttons.
After the setting contents are displayed in order, the unit is set to the timer
playback stand-by mode.
The timer setting is cancelled.
Changing the setting;
Turn the power on, and repeat the operation from step 1 in "Setting the timer"
(page 32).
Caution:
The contents of the setting will be erased if the unit is unplugged or a power
failure occurs. In such cases, set the timer again.

You can operate Sharp's TVs and DVD players with this system's remote control.
If TVs or DVD players of Sharp or other manufacturers cannot be operated by the re-
mote control, change the manufacturer setting code (see pages 37 - 38).

Point the remote control at the TV...
Depending on the model, some or all functions may not be operable using the remote
control of this unit. In this case, use the remote control supplied with each product.
1 Press the TV ON/STAND-BY button to turn on the TV.
2 Press the direct number buttons to set the channel.
Pressing the TV CH or button enables TV channel switching.
3 Press the TV VOL. + or - button to adjust the TV volume.

When you fail to perform operations properly, the following messages are displayed
on the unit.
ꢀIf trouble occurs
When this product is subjected to strong external interference (mechanical shock, ex-
cessive static electricity, abnormal supply voltage due to lightning, etc.) or if it is oper-
ated incorrectly, it may malfunction.

ꢁThe cooling fan at the rear of the unit does

If such a problem occurs, do the following:
Unplug the AC power lead and check if for-

If the speaker connection lead is short-circuited, the protection circuit will be activated.
When the protection circuit functions, the unit is turned off automatically. At that time,
the power indicator blinks red and green alternately.

Maintenance
ꢀCleaning the cabinet
Periodically wipe the cabinet with a soft cloth and a diluted soap solution, then with a
dry cloth.
ꢁDo not use chemicals for cleaning (petrol, paint thinner, etc.). It may damage the
cabinet finish.
ꢁDo not apply oil to the inside of each component. It may cause malfunctions.
