To avoid damaging your vehicle’s electronic systems, contact your
vehicle’s manufacturer before you install the HTX-242 to find out
about the proper transceiver mounting locations, antenna loca-
tions, and power and antenna cable routing guidelines.
Do not apply power to the transceiver until after you properly
mount and connect an antenna.
Use th e su pplied screws, m etal wash ers, bracket, ru bber wash ers,
an d m ou n tin g kn obs, as sh own , to m ou n t th e tran sceiver.

You can con n ect a variety of an ten n as for both m obile an d base-
station u se (see “Usin g th e HTX-242 as a Base Station ” on
Page 10). Each type of an ten n a h as its ben efits. Ch oose on e th at
best m eets you r n eeds.
Wh en decidin g on a m obile or base-station an ten n a an d its loca-
tion , con sider th e followin g:
•
Th e an ten n a sh ou ld be as h igh as possible on you r veh icle or
h ou se.
•
Th e an ten n a an d an ten n a cable sh ou ld be as far away as
possible from sou rces of electrical n oise (ign ition system s,
power cables, an d so on ).
•
•
Th e an ten n a sh ou ld be vertical.
Th e an ten n a sh ou ld h ave an SWR of less th an 1.5:1. An
SWR of 1.8:1 or greater can preven t th e HTX-242 from per-
form in g to its specified ratin gs.
After you select an an ten n a, follow its m ou n tin g in stru ction s. Th en
rou te th e an ten n a cable from th e an ten n a to th e HTX-242 an d
con n ect it to th e an ten n a con n ector.

To prevent damage to your HTX-242, you must connect an
antenna to it before you operate it.
Do not run the cable over sharp edges or moving parts that might
damage the cable.
Do not run the cable through the engine compartment or other
areas that produce extreme heat.
Check with your vehicle manufacturer for antenna cable routing
guidelines.

Conne c ting to your Ve hic le ’s Powe r
Follow th ese steps to power th e HTX-242 in you r veh icle.
1. Con n ect th e black wire to you r veh icle battery’s n egative (–)
term in al or to a m etal part of th e veh icle’s fram e. Be su re th e
m etal part is n ot in su lated from th e veh icle’s fram e by a
plastic part.
2. Con n ect th e red wire to a sou rce of voltage th at tu rn s on an d
off with th e ign ition an d th at can h an dle th e tran sceiver’s
10-am p m axim u m power draw.
Or, if you do n ot wan t th e HTX-242 to tu rn on an d off with
you r veh icle’s ign ition , con n ect th e red wire directly to th e
battery’s positive (+) term in al.
Note: You might need to connect the red wire directly to the battery if you
experience ignition noise.

Using the HTX-242 a s a Ba se Sta tion
Alth ou gh we design ed th e HTX-242 prim arily for u se as a m obile
tran sceiver, you can also u se it as a base station . To do so, you
n eed th ese item s:

50-oh m coaxial an ten n a cable an d con n ectors
Follow th ese steps to con n ect th e HTX-242 as a base station .
1. Mou n t th e base station an ten n a accordin g to its in stru c-
tion s.
Warning: For your safety, follow all cautions and warnings included with
the base station antenna.
2. Con n ect th e an ten n a cable to th e an ten n a jack on th e back
of th e HTX-242.
3. Con n ect th e black power wire to th e power su pply’s n egative
(–) term in al.
4. Con n ect th e red power wire to th e power su pply’s positive (+)
term in al.
5. Con n ect th e power su pply to a sou rce of power.

Using the HTX-242 with Pa c ke t Ra d io
You can con n ect you r HTX-242 directly to a packet radio term in al
n ode con troller, as sh own below.
Not e: You can pu rch ase an 8-pin plu g th at m atch es you r HTX-
242’s MIC jack at you r local Radio Sh ack store (Cat. No. 279-440).
Conne c ting a n Exte rna l Sp e a ke r (Op tiona l)
You can con n ect an extern al speaker to you r HTX-242.
Use an 8-oh m com m u n ication s or PA speaker th at can h an dle 5 or
m ore watts of power (su ch as Radio Sh ack Cat. No. 21-549). Th e
speaker’s cable m u st en d in a 1/ 8-in ch plu g. Sim ply plu g th e
speaker cable in to th e HTX-242’s EXT. SP jack.
If you r veh icle h as a cassette player, you can easily con n ect you r
tran sceiver to you r veh icle’s au dio system u sin g a CD-to-cassette
adapter an d a m on o-to-stereo au dio plu g.

UNDERSTANDING THE HTX-242
Th is section explain s som e of th e HTX-242’s featu res. See “Basic
Operation ” on Page 16 for in stru ction s abou t h ow to u se th ese fea-
tu res.
Dua l VFO Mod e s
Th e VFO (Variable-Frequ en cy Oscillator) m odes let you directly
select a frequ en cy an ywh ere with in th e HTX-242’s operatin g ran ge.
You r HTX-242 h as two VFOs: VFO-A an d VFO-B. You typically u se
th e VFOs to tu n e to frequ en cies you h ave n ot stored in to on e of th e
HTX-242’s m em ory ch an n els (see “Mem ory Ch an n els” on Page 13).
A related featu re of th e HTX-242 lets you tran sm it on th e fre-
qu en cy selected with on e VFO an d receive on th e frequ en cy
selected with th e oth er VFO. (See “Usin g th e Du al VFOs for Du plex
Operation ” on Page 27.)
DTMF (Touc h-Tone ) Fe a ture s
DTMF (Du al-Ton e, Mu ltiple Frequ en cy) is an oth er term for touch-
tones (th e ton es a teleph on e produ ces wh en you press a digit). Th is
stan dard set of ton es is u sed by m an y differen t am ateu r radio sys-
tem s for accessin g program m able featu res an d dialin g th rou gh
au topatch es.
You r HTX-242 produ ces all 16 stan dard DTMF ton es (0-9, ✱, #, A,
B, C, an d D). It h as 10 DTMF m em ories wh ich can each h old u p to
15 digits for qu ick tran sm ission . You can also set th e HTX-242 to
listen for a specific set of DTMF ton es, an d alert you wh en it
detects th em (th is featu re is called DTMF Pa ging). Un til it h ears th e
sequ en ce, th e HTX-242 does n ot pass an y tran sm ission s to th e
speaker.
Grou p Callin g lets you DTMF page a sin gle person or an en tire
grou p of people. To u se grou p callin g, every person in th e grou p
selects th e sam e first th ree digits as th eir DTMF page sequ en ce.
Th ey th en select u p to fou r addition al digits u n iqu e to each person .
To page an in dividu al, you tran sm it th eir en tire DTMF page
sequ en ce. To page th e en tire grou p, you tran sm it at least th e first
th ree digits of th e sequ en ce, followed by th e DTMF ton es for A, B,
an d C.
Note: Group Calling only works with the HTX-242 and other transceivers
that support this feature.

Su bau dible ton es, also kn own as CTCSS (Con tin u ou s Ton e-Coded
Squ elch System ) are low-frequ en cy ton es th at are m ixed with a
tran sm ission . Th ey are u sed by m an y repeaters to lim it in terfer-
en ce from oth er n earby radio tran sm itters. Wh en a repeater u ses a
su bau dible ton e, it does n ot react to an y tran sm ission th at does
n ot in clu de th at ton e.
You r HTX-242 in clu des all 38 stan dard su bau dible ton es. You can
set you r HTX-242 to in clu de an y of th ese ton es with you r tran s-
m ission s. You can also set you r HTX-242 to lim it reception to on ly
th ose tran sm ission s th at in clu de th e selected ton e.
Re p e a te r Op e ra tion
Operation th rou gh a repeater, wh ere you tran sm it on on e fre-
qu en cy an d receive on an oth er, is called duplex operation . Opera-
tion direct to an oth er station wh ere you tran sm it an d receive on
th e sam e frequ en cy is called s implex operation .
A repeater is a station th at receives sign als on on e frequ en cy (th e
input frequ en cy) an d th en retran sm its th em on a differen t fre-
qu en cy (th e output frequ en cy). Repeater an ten n as are typically at
th e tops of tall bu ildin gs or on an ten n a towers, so a relatively low-
power sign al can reach th e repeater. Th e repeater retran sm its th e
sign al at a h igh er power. Th is gives u sers of low-power tran sceivers
th e ability to com m u n icate over a m u ch greater ran ge.
To u se a repeater, you m u st kn ow th e repeater’s in pu t an d ou tpu t
frequ en cies. Repeaters are u su ally iden tified by th eir ou tpu t fre-
qu en cy. Th u s, a repeater th at h as an ou tpu t frequ en cy of 146.94 is
referred to as th e 146.94 repeater. To determ in e th e in pu t fre-
qu en cy you m u st kn ow th e frequ en cy offs et (600 kHz for m ost of
th e 2-m eter ban d) an d th e offset direction (+ if you add 600 kHz to
th e ou tpu t, or – if you su btract 600 kHz from th e ou tpu t).
You r HTX-242 is program m ed with th e defau lt 600 kHz frequ en cy
offset an d direction for th e 2-m eter ban d. See “Frequ en cy Offset
Defau lts” on Page 25. Wh en you tu n e to a frequ en cy th at is n or-
m ally assign ed for repeater u se, th e HTX-242 au tom atically selects
th e correct in pu t frequ en cy if you tu rn ed on th e AS option .
Me m ory Cha nne ls
You r HTX-242 h as 41 m em ory ch an n els (40 stan dard m em ory
ch an n els an d on e callin g-frequ en cy m em ory ch an n el). Each m em -
ory ch an n el can h old a tran sm it an d receive frequ en cy, su bau dible
tran sm it an d receive ton es, th e tran sm it power level, an d wh eth er
su bau dible ton e tran sm it an d squ elch are on or off. Th e HTX-242
can even scan a selected ran ge an d au tom atically store active fre-
qu en cies in u n u sed m em ory location s.

BASIC OPERATION
Turning On/ Off Your HTX-242
To tu rn you r HTX-242 on or off, press POWER. Wh en you tu rn it
on , all display elem en ts briefly tu rn on an d th e HTX-242 sou n ds
five ton es. Th en it retu rn s to th e last-u sed settin gs.
Re se tting the HTX-242
Wh en you first u se you r HTX-242, if it displays PLL Error EEP
Err, or if you ever wan t to reset th e HTX-242 to th e factory
defau lts an d clear all m em ory, follow th ese steps.
Important: This procedure clears all stored information.
1. Tu rn off th e HTX-242.

Re p la c ing the Fuse
You r HTX-242 (an d veh icle) are protected by a 15-am p fu se in th e
HTX-242’s positive (red) power wire. If th e HTX-242 does n ot tu rn
on , even wh en you are su re th e power wire is properly con n ected to
a 12V DC power sou rce, ch eck th e fu se an d replace it, if n ecessary.
1. Sn ap open th e in -lin e fu se h older.
2. Rem ove th e fu se from th e h older, an d slide th e fu se ou t of
th e en d con n ectors.
3. If th e fu se’s filam en t is n o lon ger in tact, replace th e fu se with
a 15-am p 1 1/ 4 × 1/ 4-in ch fu se (Cat. No. 270-1073).
Caution: Use only a fuse of the recommended size and type. Using
another type fuse, or defeating the fuse protection, could damage your
vehicle or your HTX-242. If the fuse frequently blows, there is a problem
with the HTX-242 or its wiring. Have that problem fixed as soon as possi-
ble.
