If the Battery Test indicator lights dimly or does not light
when you press Battery Test, replace the batteries with
two fresh ones.
Cautions:
• Use only fresh 9-volt batteries.
• Do not mix old and new batteries, different types of
batteries (standard, alkaline, or nickel cadmium), or
rechargeable batteries of different capacities.
• If you do not plan to use the Modem Mate for an
extended period, remove the batteries. Batteries can
leak chemicals that can damage electronic devices.
• Always dispose of old batteries properly.

Notes:
• The handset must be left off the hook when any

for a few seconds, then remove it and redial.
• If you have trouble making a connection, set Level
to 1 (the lowest sensitivity setting) and try again. If
you still have problems, try setting Level to 3 or 4.

RECORDING AND PLAYING
CALLS
You can connect a tape recorder to your Modem Mate to
record and play back telephone conversations.
Notes:
1
• If the tape recorder does not have a /8-inch micro-
phone jack, you need an adapter. RadioShack stores
sell adapters for several different size plugs.
• Batteries are not needed for recording and playing
back telephone conversations.
• You can only record telephone calls made from the
telephone that the Modem Mate is connected to.
Important: It is illegal in some areas to record phone
conversations without the consent of all parties to the
conversation, including the phone company. For more in-
formation, check the laws in your area.

MAINTENANCE
Your RadioShack Modem Mate is an example of superior
design and craftsmanship. The following suggestions will
help you care for the Modem Mate so you can enjoy it for
years.
Keep the Modem Mate dry. If it gets wet, wipe
it off immediately. Liquids might contain min-
erals that can corrode the electronic circuits.
Use and store the Modem Mate only in nor-
mal temperature environments. Temperature
extremes can shorten the life of electronic de-
vices, damage batteries, and distort or melt
plastic parts.
Handle the Modem Mate gently and carefully.
Dropping it can damage circuit boards and
can cause the Modem Mate to work improp-
erly.

Use only fresh batteries of the recommended
size and type. Always remove old or weak
batteries, which can leak chemicals that de-
stroy electronic circuits.
Keep the Modem Mate away from dust and
dirt, which can cause premature wear of
parts.
Wipe the Modem Mate with a damp cloth oc-
casionally to keep it looking new. Do not use
harsh chemicals, cleaning solvents, or strong
detergents.
CLEANER
Modifying or tampering with the Modem Mate’s internal
components can cause a malfunction and might invali-
date its warranty and void your FCC authorization to use
it. If the Modem Mate is not performing as it should, take
it to your local RadioShack store for assistance. If the
trouble is harming the telephone lines, the telephone
company might ask you to disconnect your Modem Mate
until you have resolved the problem.

THE FCC WANTS YOU TO KNOW
In the unlikely event that your Modem Mate causes prob-
lems on the phone line, the phone company can discon-
tinue your service. The phone company attempts to notify
you in advance. If advance notice is not practical, the
phone company notifies you of your right to file a com-
plaint with the FCC.
Also, the phone company can make changes to its lines,
equipment, operations, or procedures that could affect
the operation of your Modem Mate. The phone company
notifies you of these changes in advance, so you can
take the necessary steps to prevent interruption of your
phone service.

LIGHTNING
Your Modem Mate has built-in protection circuits to re-
duce the risk of damage from surges in phone and power
line current. These protection circuits meet or exceed
FCC requirements. However, lightning striking the phone
line or power lines can damage your Modem Mate.
Lightning damage is not common. Nevertheless, if you
live in an area that has frequent electrical storms, we
suggest that you unplug your Modem Mate during storms
to reduce the possibility of damage.
