nStay alert, watch what you are doing, and use common  
sense when operating a power tool. Do not use tool

WORK AREA  
nKeep your work area clean and well lit. Cluttered  
benches and dark areas invite accidents. Floor must not  
be slippery from wax or dust.  
nDress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry.  
Contain long hair. Keep your hair, clothing, and gloves  
away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewelry, or long  
hair can be caught in moving parts.  
nDo not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres,  
such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases,  
or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the  
dust or fumes.  
nDo not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance  
at all times. Proper footing and balance enables better  
control of the tool in unexpected situations.  
nKeep bystanders, children, and visitors away while  
operating tools. Distractions can cause you to lose  
control.  
nUse safety equipment. Always wear eye protection.  
Dust mask, nonskid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing  
protection must be used for appropriate conditions.  
nOperate air compressor in an open area at least 18 in.

footing on a solid surface enables better control of the

ELECTRICAL SAFETY  
nAvoid body contact with grounded surfaces such as  
pipes, radiators, ranges, and refrigerators. There is an  
increased risk of electric shock if your body is grounded.  
TOOL USE AND CARE  
nDo not exceed the pressure rating of any component  
in the system.  
nDon’t expose power tools to rain or wet conditions.  
Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of elec-  
tric shock.  
nProtect material lines and air lines from damage or  
puncture. Keep hose and power cord away from sharp  
objects, chemical spills, oil, solvents, and wet floors.  
nDo not abuse the cord. Never use the cord to carry the  
tool or pull the plug from an outlet. Keep cord away  
from heat, oil, sharp edges, or moving parts. Replace  
damaged cords immediately. Damaged cords increase  
the risk of electric shock.  
nCheck hoses for weak or worn condition before each  
use, making certain all connections are secure. Do not  
use if defect is found. Purchase a new hose or notify an  
authorized service center for examination or repair.

When operating a power tool outside, use an outdoor ex-  
tension cord marked “W-A” or “W”. These cords are rated  
for outdoor use and reduce the risk of electric shock.  
nRelease all pressures within the system slowly. Dust  
and debris may be harmful.  
nStore idle tools out of the reach of children and other  
untrained persons. Tools are dangerous in the hands of  
untrained users.  
PERSONAL SAFETY  
nEye protection which conforms to ANSI specifications  
and provides protection against flying particles both  
from the FRONT and SIDE should ALWAYS be worn  
by the operator and others in the work area when  
loading, operating, or servicing this tool. Eye protection  
is required to guard against flying fasteners and debris,  
which could cause severe eye injury.  
nMaintain tools with care. Follow maintenance instruc-  
tions. Properly maintained tools are easier to control.  
nCheck for misalignment or binding of moving parts,  
breakage of parts, and any other condition that may  
affect the tool’s operation. If damaged, have the tool  
serviced before using. Many accidents are caused by  
poorly maintained tools.  
nThe employer and/or user must ensure that proper  
eye protection is worn. We recommend a Wide Vision  
Safety Mask for use over eyeglasses or standard safety  
glasses that provide protection against flying particles  
both from the front and side. Always use eye protection  
which is marked to comply with ANSI Z87.1.  
nNever point any tool toward yourself or others.  
nKeep the exterior of the air compressor dry, clean, and  
free from oil and grease. Always use a clean cloth when  
cleaning. Never use brake fluids, gasoline, petroleum-  
based products, or any strong solvents to clean the unit.  
Following this rule will reduce the risk of deterioration of  
the enclosure plastic.  
nAdditional safety protection will be required in some  
environments. For example, the working area may in-  
clude exposure to a noise level which can lead to hearing

nTo reduce the risk of electric shock, do not expose to  
rain. Store indoors.  
nInspect tank yearly for rust, pin holes, or other im-  
perfections that could cause it to become unsafe.  
Never weld or drill holes in the air tank.  
nMake sure the hose is free of obstructions or snags.  
Entangled or snarled hoses can cause loss of balance or  
footing and may become damaged.  
nUse the air compressor only for its intended use. Do  
not alter or modify the unit from the original design  
or function.  
nAlways be aware that misuse and improper handling  
of this tool can cause injury to yourself and others.  
nNever leave a tool unattended with the air hose at-  
tached.  
nDo not operate this tool if it does not contain a legible  
warning label.  
nNever use an electrical adaptor with this grounded  
plug.  
nCheck damaged parts. Before further use of the air  
compressor or air tool, a guard or other part that is  
damaged should be carefully checked to determine  
that it will operate properly and perform its intended  
function. Check for alignment of moving parts, bind-  
ing of moving parts, breakage of parts, mounting, and  
any other conditions that may affect its operation. A  
guard or other part that is damaged should be properly  
repaired or replaced by an authorized service center.  
Following this rule will reduce the risk of shock, fire, or  
serious injury.  
nMake sure your extension cord is in good condition.  
When using an extension cord, be sure to use one  
heavy enough to carry the current your product will  
draw. A wire gauge size (A.W.G.) of at least 14 is rec-  
ommended for an extension cord 25 feet or less in  
length. A cord exceeding 50 feet is not recommended.  
If in doubt, use the next heavier gauge. The smaller  
the gauge number, the heavier the cord. An undersized  
cord will cause a drop in line voltage resulting in loss of  
power and overheating.  
nDo not continue to use a tool or hose that leaks air or  
does not function properly.  
nAlways disconnect the air supply and power supply  
before making adjustments, servicing a tool, or when a  
tool is not in use.  
nSave these instructions. Refer to them frequently and  
use them to instruct others who may use this air com-  
pressor. If you loan someone this tool, loan them these  
instructions also.  
nDo not attempt to pull or carry the air compressor by  
the hose.

ELECTRICAL  
EXTENSION CORDS  
SPEED AND WIRING  
Use only 3-wire extension cords that have 3-prong ground-  
ing plugs and 3-pole receptacles that accept the tool’s plug.  
When using a power tool at a considerable distance from the  
power source, use an extension cord heavy enough to carry  
the current that the tool will draw. An undersized extension  
cord will cause a drop in line voltage, resulting in a loss of  
power and causing the motor to overheat. Use the chart  
provided below to determine the minimum wire size required  
in an extension cord. Only round jacketed cords listed by  
Underwriter’s Laboratories (UL) should be used.  
The no-load speed of this tool is approximately 3,450 rpm.  
This speed is not constant and decreases under a load or  
with lower voltage. For voltage, the wiring in a shop is as  
important as the motor’s horsepower rating. A line intended  
only for lights cannot properly carry a power tool motor. Wire  
that is heavy enough for a short distance will be too light for  
a greater distance. A line that can support one power tool  
may not be able to support two or three tools.  
GROUNDING INSTRUCTIONS  
In the event of a malfunction or breakdown, grounding  
provides a path of least resistance for electric current to  
reduce the risk of electric shock. This tool is equipped  
with an electric cord having an equipment-grounding  
conductor and a grounding plug. The plug must be plugged  
into a matching outlet that is properly installed and grounded  
in accordance with all local codes and ordinances.

Do not modify the plug provided. If it will not fit the outlet,  
have the proper outlet installed by a qualified electrician.  
Improper connection of the equipment-grounding conductor  
can result in a risk of electric shock. The conductor with  
insulation having an outer surface that is green with or with-  
out yellow stripes is the equipment-grounding conductor. If  
repair or replacement of the electric cord or plug is neces-  
sary, do not connect the equipment-grounding conductor  
to a live terminal.

When working with the tool outdoors, use an extension cord  
that is designed for outside use. This is indicated by the  
letters “W-A” or “W” on the cord’s jacket.

Check with a qualified electrician or service personnel if the  
grounding instructions are not completely understood, or if  
in doubt as to whether the tool is properly grounded.

lumber, tools or other obstructions while you are

Repair or replace a damaged or worn cord immediately.  
This tool is intended for use on a circuit that has an outlet  
like the one shown in figure 1. It also has a grounding pin  
like the one shown. This product must be grounded.  
WARNING:  
Check extension cords before each use. If  
damaged replace immediately. Never use tool with  
a damaged cord since touching the damaged area  
could cause electrical shock resulting in serious  
injury.  
NOTE: Use longer air hoses instead of long extension cords.  
Your air compressor will run better and last longer.  
ELECTRICAL CONNECTION  
GROUNDING  
This tool is powered by a precision-built electric motor. It  
should be connected to a power supply that is 120 volts,  
60 Hz, AC only (normal household current). Do not operate  
this tool on direct current (DC). A substantial voltage drop  
will cause a loss of power and the motor will overheat. If  
the product does not operate when plugged into an outlet,  
double check the power supply.

GLOSSARY OF TERMS  
Air Filter  
Pressure Switch  
Porous element contained within a metal or plastic housing  
attached to the compressor cylinder head which removes  
impurity from the intake air of the compressor.  
Automatically controls the on/off cycling of the compressor.  
It stops the compressor when the cut-off pressure in the tank  
is reached and starts the compressor when the air pressure  
drops below the cut-in pressure.  
Air Tank  
Pounds Per Square Inch (PSI)  
Cylindrical component which contains the compressed air.  
Measurement of the pressure exerted by the force of the  
air. The actual psi is measured by a pressure gauge on the  
compressor.  
Check Valve  
Device that prevents compressed air from flowing back from  
the air tank to the compressor pump.  
Pump  
Cut-In Pressure  
Produces the compressed air with a reciprocating piston  
contained within the cylinder.  
The low pressure at which the motor will automatically  
restart.  
Regulator Pressure Gauge  
Cut-Off Pressure  
Displays the current line pressure. Line pressure is adjusted  
by rotating the pressure regulator knob.  
The high pressure at which the motor will automatically  
shut off.  
Safety Valve  
Electric Motor  
Prevents air pressure in the air tank from rising over a pre-  
determined limit.  
Device which provides the rotational force necessary to  
operate the compressor pump.  
SCFM  
Manual On/Off Switch  
Standard cubic feet per minute — a unit of measure of air  
delivery.  
Control which turns the air compressor on or off. The pres-  
sure switch will not automatically start and control the  
compressor unless the manual On/Off Switch is in the ON  
(l) position.  
Tank Pressure Gauge  
Indicates the pressure in the air tank.  
Thermal Overload Switch  
NPT  
National Pipe Thread — A seal thread tape must be used to  
provide a leak-free seal on pipe threaded connections.  
Automatically shuts off the compressor if the temperature of  
the electric motor exceeds a predetermined limit.  
Pressure Regulator Knob  
Regulates the outgoing pressure from the air outlet to the  
tool. It is possible to increase or decrease the pressure at  
the outlet by adjusting this control knob.

FEATURES  
PRESSURE REGULATOR KNOB  
KNOW YOUR AIR COMPRESSOR  
Use the pressure regulator knob to adjust the amount of  
air being delivered through the hose. Pressing down on the  
knob will lock it into place. This prevents movement of the  
knob caused by vibration during use.  
See Figure 2.  
Before attempting to use this product, familiarize yourself  
with all operating features and safety rules.  
BUILT-IN CORD WRAP  
A built-in cord wrap is provided for convenience in moving  
and storing the unit.  
REGULATOR PRESSURE GAUGE  
The current line pressure is displayed on the regulator pres-  
sure gauge. This pressure can be adjusted by rotating the  
pressure regulator knob.  
DRAIN VALVES  
A drain valve is located on each tank for draining condensa-  
tion to help prevent tank corrosion.  
SAFETY VALVE  
The safety valve is designed to automatically release air if  
the air receiver pressure exceeds the preset maximum.  
HANDLE  
The handle of your air compressor lifts up for use and folds  
down for storage or transportation.  
TANK PRESSURE GAUGE  
The tank pressure gauge indicates the pressure of the air  
in the tank.  
ASSEMBLY  
UNPACKING  
This product has been shipped completely assembled.  
INSTALLING THE DIPSTICK  
See Figure 3.  
nCarefully remove the air compressor and any accessories  
from the box. Make sure that all items listed in the packing  
list are included.  
To prevent oil from spilling during shipping, the air compres-  
sor has a plug installed in the oil fill hole. Before using the  
unit the first time, replace the plug with the oil fill dipstick  
and check the oil level.  
nInspect the air compressor carefully to make sure no  
breakage or damage occurred during shipping.  
nRemove the plug from the oil fill hole.  
nDo not discard the packing material until you have care- nInsert the dipstick into the oil fill hole.

nRemove the dipstick and check the oil level, making sure  
nIf any parts are damaged or missing, please call  
the oil registers between the MIN and MAX reference lev-  
els on the dipstick. If the level does not register between

BREAKING IN THE PUMP  
See Figures 4 - 5.  
Perform the following steps to break in the pump before  
using the air compressor for the first time.  
nMake sure the plug in the oil fill hole has been replaced  
with the dipstick and the oil level falls within the MIN and  
MAX range.  
nTurn the pressure regulator knob fully clockwise to open  
the air flow. Lift the knob to adjust the air flow, and push  
down to lock.  
nPlace the switch in the OFF (O) position and plug in the  
power cord.  
nOpen both drain valves completely.  
NOTE: The air compressor has two separate tanks: an  
upper tank and a lower tank. Be sure to open drain valves  
for both.

nTurn the air compressor ON ( I ) and run the air compres-  
sor for 10 minutes to break in pump parts.

careless. Remember that a careless fraction of a  
second is sufficient to inflict severe injury.

side shields when operating tools. Failure to do  
so could result in objects being thrown into your  
eyes resulting in possible serious injury.  
WARNING:  
This equipment incorporates parts, such as snap  
switches, that tend to produce arcs or sparks.  
Therefore, when located in a garage, it should be  
in a room or enclosure provided for the purpose,  
or should be 18 in. or more above the floor.  
CAUTION:  
Do not use in an environment that is dusty or

Air compressors are utilized in a variety of air system applica-  
tions. Match hoses, connectors, air tools, and accessories  
to the capabilities of the air compressor.

The handle of the air compressor can be raised for use and  
lowered for storage or transportation.  
A built-in cord wrap is provided for keeping the cord out of  
the way when the unit is in storage or when it is being rolled  
from one location to another.  
To lift the handle, pull the handle release knob straight out  
and raise the handle until it stops. Release the knob. You  
will hear a click when the handle locks into place.  
To lower the handle, pull the handle release knob straight  
out and fold it all the way down. Release the knob.  
CAUTION:  
When lowering the handle, avoid placing hands or  
fingers on top of the air compressor frame. This  
could cause fingers to be pinched when the handle  
is folded down.

OPERATION  
CHECKING THE OIL  
See Figures 8 - 9.  
The air compressor is pre-filled with the proper type and  
quantity of oil. However, it is necessary to check the oil level  
before each use, and add oil if needed.  
OIL  
DIPSTICK  
NOTE: Always check the oil when the unit is sitting on a  
level surface.  
nInsert the dipstick into the oil fill hole until it stops. Remove  
the dipstick and check the oil level.  
nMake sure the reading is between the MIN and MAX  
reference levels on the dipstick.  
NOTE: Never let the oil drop to a level lower than MIN.  
Maximum level is reached when the oil reaches the MAX  
level reference on the dipstick.  
OIL FILL  
HOLE  
nReinsert the dipstick securely into the oil fill hole.  
To add oil:  
nRemove the dipstick.  
nUsing a funnel, carefully pour oil into the oil fill hole. Refill  
only with synthetic oil SAE 5W40.  
NOTE: Avoid using too much oil. Ensure that the level of  
the oil does not exceed the maximum reference level on  
the dipstick.

OPERATION  
USING THE AIR COMPRESSOR  
See Figures 10 - 11.  
SWITCH  
nEnsure power switch is in the OFF (O) position and air  
compressor is unplugged.  
nIf not already installed, attach hose to compressor as  
previously instructed.  
nAttach 1/4 in. NPT male connector fitting to accessory  
or tool you intend to use.  
nInsert the other end of the male connector to the quick  
coupler on the open end of hose.  
WARNING:  
Always ensure the switch is in the OFF (O)  
position and the regulator pressure gauge reads  
zero before changing air tools or disconnecting  
the hose from the air outlet. Failure to do so could  
result in possible serious personal injury.

nControl the amount of air flow with the pressure regula-  
tor knob. Turning the knob fully counterclockwise will  
completely stop the flow of air.

COLD WEATHER STARTING

NOTE: The air compressor has two tanks. Be sure to  
open both tank drain valves.  
nWhen finished, always drain the tank and unplug the  
unit. Never leave the unit plugged in and/or running unat-  
tended.  
nPull the switch out to the ON (l) position and run the  
compressor for 1 - 2 minutes.  
nTurn the switch to the OFF (O) position.  
nTurn the tank drain valves clockwise to close.  
NOTE: The air compressor has two tanks. Be sure to  
close both tank drain valves.  
nFollow normal operating procedures.

DRAINING THE TANKS

To help prevent tank corrosion and keep moisture out of the  
air used, the air tanks of the compressor should be drained  
daily.  
NOTE:Theaircompressorhastwoseparatetanks:anupper  
tank and a lower tank. Be sure to open drain valves for both  
and perform this operation for both tanks.

Unplug the air compressor and release all air from  
the tanks before servicing. Failure to depressurize  
tanks before attempting to remove valve may  
cause serious personal injury.  
nRotate drain valves clockwise until tightly closed.  
CHECKING THE SAFETY VALVE

DANGER:  
Do not attempt to tamper with the safety valve.  
Anything loosened from this device could fly up  
and hit you. Failure to heed this warning could  
result in death or serious personal injury.  
WARNING:  
If air leaks after the ring has been released, or  
if the valve is stuck and cannot be actuated by  
the ring, Do not use the air compressor until  
the safety valve has been replaced. Use of the  
air compressor in this condition could result in  
serious personal injury.  
The safety valve will automatically release air if the air re-  
ceiver pressure exceeds the preset maximum. The valve  
should be checked before each day of use by pulling the  
ring by hand.  
nTurn the air compressor on and allow the tanks to fill. The  
compressor will shut off when the pressure reaches the  
preset maximum.  
nTurn the air compressor off.  
nPull the ring on the safety valve to release air for three to  
five seconds.  
nRelease the ring. Air must immediately stop escaping  
when the ring is released. Any continued loss of air after  
releasing the safety valve ring indicates a problem with  
the safety valve. Discontinue use and seek service before  
continued use of the air compressor.

MAINTENANCE  
REPLACING THE AIR FILTER  
See Figure 14.  
WARNING:  
When servicing use only identical RIDGID  
replacement parts. Use of any other parts may  
create a hazard or cause product damage.  
If you notice a reduction in performance of the air compres-  
sor, and the air delivery is lower than desired, it may be  
necessary to replace the air filter. A clogged air filter reduces  
performance and can cause increased wear.  
nUnplug the air compressor. Allow the unit to cool for five

minutes if needed.  
Always wear safety goggles or safety glasses with  
side shields during power tool operation or when  
blowing dust. If operation is dusty, also wear a  
dust mask.  
nTo remove the old air filter, turn it counterclockwise.  
nUsing a clean, dry cloth, wipe away any loose dirt or debris  
before reinstalling the new filter.  
nInsert the new air filter and hand-tighten by turning it  
clockwise. Do not overtighten.  
WARNING:  
Always release all pressure, disconnect from  
power supply, and allow unit to cool to the touch  
before cleaning or making repairs on the air  
compressor.  
AIR  
FILTER  
GENERAL MAINTENANCE  
Avoid using solvents when cleaning plastic parts. Most  
plastics are susceptible to damage from various types of  
commercial solvents and may be damaged by their use. Use  
clean cloths to remove dirt, dust, oil, grease, etc.  
WARNING:  
Do not at any time let brake fluids, gasoline,  
petroleum-based products, penetrating oils, etc.,  
come in contact with plastic parts. Chemicals can  
damage, weaken or destroy plastic which may  
result in serious personal injury.  
Electric tools used on fiberglass material, wallboard, spack-  
ling compounds, or plaster are subject to accelerated wear  
and possible premature failure because the fiberglass chips  
and grindings are highly abrasive to bearings, brushes, com-  
mutators, etc. Consequently, we do not recommended using  
this tool for extended work on these types of materials. How-  
ever, if you do work with any of these materials, it is extremely  
important to clean the tool using compressed air.

MAINTENANCE  
CHANGING THE OIL  
See Figures 15 - 16.  
WHEEL  
Replace the oil after the first 100 hours of operation and  
every 300 hours following the first oil change.  
NOTE: Though not necessary, you may find it helpful to  
remove the wheel from the unit to easily access the oil  
drain.  
To remove the wheel for draining the oil:  
nBe sure the unit is sitting on a level surface to ensure  
proper drainage. It is advisable to place a prop, such as  
a brick or wood block, underneath the frame of the unit  
to keep it level once the wheel is removed.  
nWith a wrench, loosen the hex head bolt. Remove the  
bolt.  
HEX NUT  
nRemove the wheel, spacer, and hex nut.  
SPACER  
To drain and replace the oil without removing the  
wheel:

nPlace a suitable container underneath the drain to collect  
used oil.  
nRemove the drain plug with a 3/16 in. hex key.  
nWhen the used oil has drained, reinstall the drain plug  
and tighten with the wrench.  
nRemove the dipstick.  
nTo refill, use a funnel to pour oil into the fill hole. Refill  
only with synthetic oil SAE 5W40.  
NOTE: Avoid refilling with too much oil. Ensure that the  
level of the oil does not exceed the maximum reference  
level on the dipstick. The recommended amount of oil for  
refilling is 6 oz. (170g).  
nReinsert the dipstick securely into the oil fill hole.

nIf the wheel was removed, reinstall the wheel, spacer, and  
hex nut. Tighten the hex nut securely with the wrench.  
Do not overtighten.
