to play a disc. Leave the player in the

straight line from the center  
toward the edge using a soft,  
lint-free cloth. A cleaning  
agent may damage the disc.  
Write only on the printed  
side of a CD-R/CD-RW and only with a  
soft felt-tipped pen.

touch the surface.

Composite, CVBS, or Baseband) on the  
TV (cable not supplied).  
Using SCART jack  
G Use the SCART cable (black) to connect  
the DVD Players SCART jack (AV) to the  
corresponding Scart input jacks on the TV  
(cable supplied).  
2 Set the SCAN MODE switch to  
Helpful Hint:  
INTERLACE.  
Ensure that the “TV” indication on  
SCART cable is connected to theTV  
set and “DVD” indication on SCART  
cable is connected to the DVD Player.  
3 To hear the sound of this DVD Player  
through your TV, use the audio cables  
(white/red) to connect AUDIO OUT (L/  
R) jacks of the DVD Player to the  
corresponding AUDIO IN jacks on the TV  
(cable not supplied).

Interlace:  
Select this setting when connected to a  
standard (interlace format) TV.  
Progressive:  
Select progressive when you have a TV  
that can accept progressive signals (480/  
525p) to enjoy accurate colour  
reproduction and high quality images.  
Using an accessory RF m odulator  
1 Use the composite video cable (yellow) to  
connect the DVD Players CVBS jack to  
the video input jack on the RF modulator.  
Helpful hints:  
2 Use the RF coaxial cable (not supplied) to  
connect the RF modulator to your TV’s  
RF jack.  
During Progressive mode, 4:3 aspect  
images are distorted whenTV Shape is set to  
16:9’ . Change theTV screens aspect ratio  
settings to AUTO to avoid image distortion.  
(see page 31 “4:3 Aspect”).  
SomeTVs and projectors are not  
compatible with this DVD Player. If picture  
distorted during progressive signals, switch  
the SCAN MODE to Interlace.

Subwoofer frequency  
Speakers (Advance Bass

Enables you to select Subwoofer  
frequency output between 120Hz {LOW}  
and 200Hz {HIGH}.  
This menu contains setup options for  
your audio output which makes the  
speaker setup system reproduce high  
quality surround sound. For details, see  
page 21.  
SACD Direct  
Enables you (with a suitable speaker  
system where the satelite speaker has  
sufficient bass response to 40Hz) to  
bypass the bass management system for  
multi-channel SACD playback.This helps  
to preserve maximum sound quality of  
your SACD.

Sleep Tim er  
Sleep timer turns this DVD Player to  
standby mode when playback is stopped  
for 20 minutes.  
PCM O utput  
Allows you to select PCM digital output  
between 48kHz and 96kHz.  
G O n – DVD Player will go to standby  
after a pre-defined time.  
G 48kHz – A 96kHz PCM data disc will  
be converted to 48kHz.  
G O ff Select this to disable the {SLEEP  
G 96kHz – 96kHz PCM audio on non-  
copy protected DVD discs will be played  
back at 96kHz. For copy protected discs,  
the digital output will be downsampled to  
48kHz.

Enabling Play once/Play Always  
Access  
1 Insert a disc.  
G The child safe’ dialog appears on the  
TV screen.

always}. Then, enter the four-digit code.  
G {Play once} – the disc can play as long  
as it is in the disc tray and the DVD  
system power is on.

1 Press SYSTEM MENU and press 4to

need to remove the disc or turn off the  
power before the disc is completely  
locked. The next time when you insert  
the disc, it will not play unless you enter  
the four-digit code.  
2 Press 2to select {ACCESS}.  
G Playback will stop.  
3 Move to {ENTER PIN} and enter the four-  
digit PIN.  
4 Enter the four-digit PIN again to unlock  
the disc or the display the {ACCESS}  
menu.

G Parental Level codings are applicable only  
for the country specified on the disc set  
by the disc manufacturer.  
Disc Lock  
Not all discs are rated or coded by the  
disc maker.You can prevent a specific disc  
from playing by locking the disc.  
G So, for some discs, you may need to  
choose the country for which the disc is  
coded in order to play at the Parental  
Level you select.  
G O n You will need to enter the four-  
digit password before you can play the  
disc.  
G O ff Select this to unlock the disc and  
allow future playback.  
Helpful hints:  
When a locked disc is loading, the DVD  
Player will prompt the four-digit password  
(“0000” is the default password).  
To change the password, refer to option  
{CHANGE PIN}.  
TIPS:

Parental Level  
Rating explanations  
Some DVDs may have a parental level  
assigned to the complete disc or to  
certain scenes on the disc.This feature  
lets you set playback limitation level.The  
rating levels are from 1 to 8 and are  
country dependant.You can prohibit the  
playing of certain discs that are not  
suitable for your children or have certain  
discs played with alternative scenes (if  
available on disc).  
8 ADULT  
Mature material; should be viewed only by  
adults due to graphic sexual material, violence or  
language.  
7 NC-17  
No children under age 17; not recommended  
viewing for children under age 17.  
5-6 PG-R  
Parental Guidance - Restricted; recommended  
that parents restrict children under 17 from  
viewing or allow to view only when supervised by  
a parent or adult guardian.  
4 PG13  
G VCD, SVCD, CD have no level indication,  
so parental control has no effect on those  
kinds of discs.This also applies to most  
illegal DVDs.  
Material is unsuitable for children under age 13.

6 Enter the new four-digit password a  
second time to confirm.  
G The new four-digit password will take  
effect.  
7 Press SYSTEM MENU again to exit the  
{SETUP} menu.  
Helpful Hint:  
If you forget the password, you can press  
STOP key four times to reset the password  
to the default settings (0000).  
TIPS:

Troubleshooting  
WARNING  
Under no circum stances should you tr y to repair the system yourself, as this will  
invalidate the warranty. Do not open the system as there is a risk of electric shock.  
If a fault occurs, first check the points listed below before taking the system for repair. If  
you are unable to rem edy a problem by following these hints, consult your dealer or  
Philips for help.

No picture  
Refer to yourTVs manual for correct Video In  
channel selection. Change the TV channel until you

Distorted picture  
– Sometimes a small amount of picture distortion may  
appear, depending on the disc being played.This is  
not a malfunction.  
Snowingeffect when using HDMI  
or DVI connection  
– Check if your HDMI is faulty or properly connected.  
– Check if your device supports HDCP.  
TV display a blankor distortedscreen – TV is incompitable with the resolution you chose.

connecting yourTV to any of the interlace connector

– Check the disc for fingerprints/scratches and  
clean with a soft cloth wiping from center to edge.  
No audio at digital output  
– Check the digital connections.  
– Check if your receiver can decode MPEG-2 or DTS.  
Make sure digital output is set to PCM Only.  
– Check if the audio format of the selected audio  
language matches your receiver capabilities.

Disc cant play  
– A DVD+R/DVD+RW/CD-R must be finalized.  
Ensure the disc label is facing up.  
– Check if the disc is defective by trying another disc.  
If you have recorded a Picture CD or MP3 CD  
yourself, ensure that your disc contains at least 10  
pictures or 5 MP3 tracks.  
– Check the Discs Region Code.  
No return to start-up screen when  
disc is rem oved  
Reset the unit by switching the player off, then on  
again.  
The player does not respond to  
the Rem ote Control  
– Aim the Remote Control directly at the sensor  
on the front of the player.  
Reduce the distance to the player.  
Replace the batteries in the Remote Control.  
Re-insert the batteries with their polarities (+/–  
signs) as indicated.  
Buttons do not work  
To completely reset the player, unplug the AC  
cord from the AC outlet for 5-10 seconds.  
Player does not respond to som e

Operations may not be permitted by the disc.  
Refer to the instructions of the disc jacket.

– Use a commonly available cleaning CD/DVD to

Glossary  
Analog: Sound that has not been turned into  
numbers. Analog sound varies, while digital  
sound has specific numerical values. These  
jacks send audio through two channels, the left  
and right.  
Aspect ratio: The ratio of vertical and  
horizontal sizes of a displayed image.The  
horizontal vs. vertical ratio of conventional TVs.  
is 4:3, and that of wide-screens is 16:9.  
AUDIO O UT Jacks: Red and white jacks on  
the back of the DVD Player that send audio to  
another system (TV, Stereo, etc.).  
Bit Rate: The amount of data used to hold a  
given length of music; measured in kilobits per  
second, or kbps. Or, the speed at which you  
record. Generally, the higher the bit rate, or the  
higher the recording speed, the better the  
sound quality. However, higher bit rates use  
more space on a Disc.  
Chapter : Sections of a movie or a music  
piece on a DVD that are smaller than titles. A  
title is composed of several chapters. Each  
chapter is assigned a chapter number enabling  
you to locate the chapter you want.  
Com ponent Video O ut Jacks: Red, blue  
and green jacks on the back of the DVD  
System that send high-quality video to a TV  
that has Component Video In jacks (R/G/B, Y/  
Pb/Pr,YUV, etc.).  
Digital: Sound that has been converted into  
numerical values. Digital sound is available  
when you use the DIGITAL AUDIO OUT  
(COAXIAL or OPTICAL) jacks.These jacks  
send audio through multiple channels, instead  
of just two channels as analog does.  
JPEG: A very common digital still picture  
format.A still-picture data compression system  
proposed by the Joint Photographic Expert  
Group, which features small decrease in image  
quality in spite of its high compression ratio.  
MP3: A file format with a sound data  
compression system.MP3is the abbreviation  
of Motion Picture Experts Group 1 (or MPEG-  
1) Audio Layer 3. By using the MP3 format. One  
CD-R or CD-RW can contain about 10 times  
more data then a regular CD.  
Multichannel: DVDs are formatted to have  
each sound track constitute one sound field.  
Multichannel refers to a structure of sound  
tracks having three or more channels.  
Parental level: Limits Disc play according to  
the age of the users or the limitation level in  
each country. The limitation varies from disc to  
disc; when it is activated, playback will be  
prohibited if the softwares level is higher than  
the user-set level.  
PCM (Pulse Code Modulation): A system  
for converting analog sound to digital sound for  
later processing, with no data compression  
used in conversion.  
Playback control (PBC): Refers to the  
signal recorded on video CDs or SVCDs for  
controlling playback. By using menu screens  
recorded on aVideo CD or SVCD that  
supports PBC, you can enjoy interactive  
playback and searching.  
Progressive Scan: It displays all the  
horizontal lines of a picture at one time, as a  
single frame. This system can convert the  
interlaced video from DVD into progressive  
format when the DVD Player is connected to a  
Progressive Scan TV. It dramatically increases  
the vertical resolution and provides the best  
picture.  
DCDiby Faroudja : Digital Crystal Clear is  
a package of picture innovations that digitally  
adjusts and optimizes picture quality to optimal  
contrast, color and sharpness level.  
Disc m enu: A screen display prepared for  
allowing selection of images, sounds, subtitles,  
multi-angles, etc recorded on a DVD.  
Dolby Digital: A surround sound system  
developed by Dolby Laboratories containing up  
to six channels of digital audio (front left and  
right, surround left and right, center and  
subwoofer).  
DTS: Digital Theater Systems. This is a  
surround sound system, but it is different from  
Dolby Digital. The formats were developed by  
different companies.  
HDMI: HDMI is a direct digital connection  
that can carry digital HD video as well as digital  
multi-channel audio. By eliminating the  
conversion to analog signals, it delivers perfect  
picture and sound quality, completely free from  
noise. HDMI is fully backward-compatible with  
DVI.  
Region code: A system allowing discs to be  
played only in the region designated.This unit  
will only play discs that have compatible region  
codes. You can find the region code of your  
unit by looking on the product label. Some  
discs are compatible with more than one  
region (or ALL regions).  
S-Video: Produces a clear picture by sending  
separate signals for the luminance and the  
color. You can use S-Video only if your TV has  
an S-Video In jack.  
Title: The longest section of a movie or music  
feature on DVD. Each title is assigned a title  
number, enabling you to locate the title you  
want.  
VIDEO O UT jack: Yellow jack on the back  
of the DVD Player that sends the DVD picture  
video to aTV.
