Chapter 1
For small or narrow documents, load the edge that is less than 148 mm (5.8 in) pointing into the feeder so
that the longer edge can be pulled into the feeder and passed along by the feed rollers.
When loading small or lightweight documents, such as A6 cards (index cards) or U.S. check carbons, load a
stack of at least five documents to ensure that the ADF properly detects and feeds the stack. When
scanning fewer than five small or lightweight documents, scan the documents by placing them on the
scanner glass.
When loading long documents that hang over the end of the input tray, pull out the input tray extender (1),
and then load the documents (2).
How to load documents
1.
Flip up the paper stop in the output tray that best matches the size of the documents that you are scanning.
Select the stop position that is closest to (and beyond) the edge of your documents as they come out of the
automatic document feeder (ADF).

2.
Fan the stack of document pages to ensure that the pages do not stick together. Fan the edge that will be
pointing into the ADF in one direction, and then fan that same edge in the opposite direction.
3.
Align the edges of the documents by tapping the bottom of the stack against the table top. Rotate the stack
90 degrees and repeat.
4.
Place the stack in the middle of the input tray. Load the stack face up. For fastest scanning, load the stack
with the left edge leading into the ADF.
NOTE: In the scanning software, choose the layout setting that matches the orientation of the originals
in the ADF.
5.
Adjust the paper guides to the width of the documents. Take care not to overtighten the guides, which can
restrict paper feeding, but make sure that the paper guides touch the edges of the documents.

Chapter 2
Automatically rotate scanned pages
By default, pages fed through the automatic document feeder (ADF) appear in the scan output in the same
orientation as the pages in the ADF input tray. The scanner can rotate the scan data to produce a different
orientation in the scan output. For example, this feature is useful when you want fast scanning of pages that have
a portrait orientation. You can load the longer edge of these pages into the ADF input tray and obtain scan output
with the shorter edge of the pages at the top of the image.
To enable scanned page rotation in an HP Smart Document Scan Software profile, follow these steps:
1.
2.
3.
Open the HP Smart Document Scan Software.
Select a scan profile, and then click Edit.
On the Layout tab of the Profile Settings dialog box, select the appropriate options for Original Layout
and ADF Feed Direction.
NOTE: In other scanning software, the options for rotating pages are on the Layout tab of the ISIS or
TWAIN Advanced Settings dialog box.
Scan extra long documents
By default, the automatic document feeder (ADF) accepts a stack of originals up to 300 x 432 mm (11.8 x 17 in).
You can choose to scan pages up to 300 x 864 mm (11.8 x 34 in) through the ADF.
To enable long-page scans in an HP Smart Document Scan Software profile, follow these steps:
1.
2.
3.
Open the HP Smart Document Scan Software.
Select a scan profile, and then click Edit.
On the Layout tab of the Profile Settings dialog box, select Custom in the Size drop-down list, and then
type the actual page dimensions, up to 300 x 864 mm (11.8 x 34 in), in the Width and Height boxes.
NOTE: 1 In other scanning software, the page size settings are on the Layout tab of the ISIS or TWAIN
Advanced Settings dialog box.
NOTE: 2 Some scanning and destination software (including the Kofax VirtualReScan driver) might not
support all of the page sizes that the scanner accepts.
NOTE: 3 HP recommends scanning long pages individually at a resolution of 300 dpi or lower.
Filter out color from a document (color dropout)
You can filter out a dark background from the image content, for example black text on green paper or red
instructions on a form. Removing colors from the scan might reduce the scan file size and improve optical
character recognition (OCR) results. You can select to filter out a color channel (red, green, or blue) or up to three
specific colors. For specific colors, the sensitivity setting controls how closely a scanned color must approximate
the specified color.
To select colors to eliminate from a scan in an HP Smart Document Scan Software profile, follow these steps:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Open the HP Smart Document Scan Software.
Select a scan profile, and then click Edit.
On the Scan tab of the Profile Settings dialog box, click Advanced Settings.
On the Color Dropout tab of the Properties dialog box, specify the color dropout settings.
For information about the color dropout settings, see the online help for the scanning software that you are using.
NOTE: 1 The color channel filter only applies to grayscale scans and to black and white scans. Specific color
filters apply to all color modes.
NOTE: 2 To filter out color in another scanning software, navigate to the ISIS or TWAIN Advanced Settings
dialog box. On the Color Dropout tab, specify the color dropout settings.

Set the background color for scans from the automatic
document feeder
When you scan from the automatic document feeder (ADF), you can choose a white or black background for the
scan. When the scan background contrasts with the color at the outside edges of the document, the scanning
software is better able to distinguish the edges of the scanned document. For example, use the black background
to scan a document that is printed on white paper.
To select the scan background color in an HP Smart Document Scan Software profile, follow these steps:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Open the HP Smart Document Scan Software.
Select a scan profile, and then click Edit.
On the Scan tab of the Profile Settings dialog box, click Advanced Settings.
On the More tab of the Properties dialog box, select a color from the ADF Background drop-down list.
NOTE: To set the scan background color in another scanning software, navigate to the ISIS or TWAIN
Advanced Settings dialog box. On the More tab, select a color from the ADF Background drop-down list.
Use scanner hardware compression for faster scans
The scanner supports multiple levels of JPEG compression to increase the rate of data transfer from the scanner
to the scanning software on the computer. The scanner compresses the data during the scanning process. The
scanning software can uncompress the data in order to create scanned images. JPEG compression works on
grayscale and color scans.
To enable JPEG compression in an HP Smart Document Scan Software profile, follow these steps:
1.
2.
3.
Open the HP Smart Document Scan Software.
Select a scan profile, and then click Edit.
Turn on compression:
On the Scan tab of the Profile Settings dialog box, select the Use scanner compression (for
optimal speed) check box.

On the Scan tab of the Profile Settings dialog box, click Advanced Settings.
On the More tab of the Properties dialog box, move the Scanner JPEG Compression slider to the
position that you want.
NOTE: To specify the level of JPEG compression in another application, navigate to the TWAIN or ISIS
Advanced Settings dialog box, and then move the Scanner JPEG Compression slider to the position that
you want.
Disable Misfeed (Multipick) Detection
The Misfeed (Multipick) Detection feature stops the scan or copy process if it senses that multiple pages are fed
into the scanner at one time. This feature is enabled by default.
To disable the Misfeed (Multipick) Detection feature in an HP Smart Document Scan Software profile, follow
these steps:
1.
2.
3.
4.

On the Profile tab, the Display thumbnails when scanning check box must be cleared.
Additional settings on the Destination tab, such as disabling the Show Save As dialog box, might be
required depending on the profile.
Set up and use the imprinter
The scanner includes an imprinter that can print a text message and index number on the back of documents that
are fed through the automatic document feeder (ADF). An imprinter mark verifies that the document has been
scanned, and the mark can indicate when the scan occurred.
NOTE: If you are scanning two-sided pages, the imprinter mark might print over existing content on the
pages.

NOTE: For narrow pages, if the imprinter is positioned outside of the width of the paper in the ADF input
tray, the imprinter is not able to print on the scanned pages. In this case, the scan does not complete and an
error message is displayed on the computer screen.
1.
Raise the ADF input tray until it clicks into place.
2.
Lift the green lever slightly, and then slide the imprinter to the position that you want.
NOTE: Several paper sizes are indicated in the imprinter carriage. If you set the imprinter at the
position for the paper size that you are using, the imprinter mark is printed about 5 mm (.2 in) from the
side of the page. You can select any position that prints on the size of the paper that you are using. If
you leave the imprinter between the marked positions, the imprinter might shift during scanning, and the
imprinter mark will be of poor quality.
3.
Grasp the center of the ADF input tray, and then lower the ADF input tray into position for scanning.
Test the imprinter
Test the imprinter to verify that the print cartridge is loaded properly and to check the placement of the imprinter
mark on the page.
NOTE: To prevent the counter value from changing during the test, the imprinter test prints a preset mark in
the configured location.

If the scanner lamp remains on after a long period of inactivity, turn off the scanner, wait 30 seconds, and then
turn the scanner back on.
NOTE: The scanner lamp does not turn off when paper is in the automatic document feeder input tray.
Scanner does not scan right away
Make sure the power switch on the right side of the scanner is turned on.
If the scanner has not been used for a while, the scanner lamp might need to go through a warm-up period before
scanning can begin. If the scanner lamp needs to warm up, it takes a moment after starting the software or
pressing a scanner button for scanning to begin.
You can enable Instant Lamp On mode in the HP Scanner Tools Utility.
Scanner scans only one side of a double-sided page
Verify the following:
For single pass duplex scanning, scan pages through the ADF.
Select the Duplex setting in the scanning or copy software.
Scanned image is fuzzy
When scanning with the automatic document feeder (ADF), follow these steps:
1.
2.
Verify that the document original is not fuzzy.
Check for any obstructions in the scanner paper path and make sure that the paper guides are positioned
appropriately. Try another scan.
3.
If the scanned image is still of poor quality, clean the ADF.
When scanning from the scanner glass, it is important that the item you scan comes in close contact with the
scanner glass. Follow these steps:
1.
2.
3.
Verify that the document original is not fuzzy.
Check to see that the item is in full contact with the scanner glass.
If the scanned image is still of poor quality, clean the scanner glass.

Optimizing scanning and task speeds
Several settings influence the total time for a scanning job. When you want to optimize scanning performance,
consider the following information.
To optimize scanning speed for pages that are A4 (or Letter) size or smaller, load the pages with the long
edge feeding into the automatic document feeder (ADF). Scanning pages by loading the long edge first
minimizes the length of the media passing the scan heads, which results in faster scans.
NOTE: In the scanning software, choose the layout setting that matches the orientation of the originals
in the ADF.
To optimize data transfer from the scanner to the scanning software on the computer, enable scanner
hardware (JPEG) compression. Typically, the use of scanner compression reduces the time to complete all
color scans and grayscale scans with resolution above 300 dpi. Scanner compression affects the rate of
data transfer only and can be used with all output formats.
If you are scanning to edit text, the optical character recognition (OCR) software requires more processing
time than for non-OCR scans, which is normal. Wait for the item to scan.
NOTE: For the best OCR results, scanner compression should be set to the minimum compression
level or disabled.
Scanning at a higher resolution than necessary increases scanning time and creates a larger file with no
additional benefit. If you are scanning at a high resolution, set the resolution to a lower level to increase
scanning speed.

When scanning with the ADF, check the paper orientation.
When scanning from the scanner glass, the item might not be placed correctly on the scanner glass. Make sure
that the item you are trying to scan is placed face down on the glass and the lid is closed.

Scanned images are not straight
When scanning with the automatic document feeder, make sure that the paper guides touch the edges of the
original. Make sure that all documents are of the same size.
When scanning from the scanner glass, the item might have shifted when you closed the lid. Straighten the
original on the scanner glass, and then scan again.
Scanned images contain streaks or scratches
When scanning with the automatic document feeder (ADF), follow the steps below. After each step, try another
scan to see if the streaks or scratches are still apparent. If so, try the next step.
1.
2.
3.
Check that the originals are clean and unwrinkled.

lies with the printer.
If the second original has the same problem, clean the automatic document feeder or the scanner glass.

Scan files are too large
If the saved scans have very large file sizes, try the following:
Verify the scan resolution setting:
200 dpi is sufficient for storing documents as images.
For most fonts, 300 dpi is sufficient for using optical character recognition (OCR) to create editable
text.
For Asian fonts and small fonts, 400 dpi is the recommended resolution.
Scanning at a higher resolution than necessary creates a larger file with no additional benefit.
Color scans create larger files than do black and white scans.
If you are scanning a large number of pages at one time, consider scanning fewer pages at a time to create
more, smaller files.
Use the Kofax VirtualReScan software to process the scanned data. Kofax VirtualReScan compresses the
data, which can result in a smaller file.
The imprinter is not printing or the print quality is poor
If you reset the ink level in the HP Scanner Tools Utility the last time that you replaced the print cartridge, you will
receive imprinter status alerts when the ink level is running low. If you did not reset the ink level at the time that
you replaced the print cartridge, you might receive erroneous imprinter status alerts or the imprinter might run out
of ink before the HP Scanner Tools Utility reports that the ink level is low.
NOTE: To use the imprinter, load originals in the automatic document feeder (ADF). The imprinter cannot
print on pages placed on the scanner glass.
To remedy other imprinter problems, try the following:
1.
2.
Verify that the Enable Imprinting check box is selected in the scanning software.
If the imprinter ink is smearing or leaving blobs of ink on the paper, remove the print cartridge, and then
gently wipe the copper contacts of the print cartridge with a clean, damp, lint-free cloth. Reinstall the print
cartridge, but do not reset the ink level in the HP Scanner Tools Utility.
3.
4.
Verify that the cartridge stall latch holds the print cartridge firmly in place.
Verify that the imprinter is positioned at one of the predefined locations that is inside the width of the paper
as it is fed through the ADF.
5.
Clean and test the imprinter:
a.
Press the Tools ( ) button on the scanner front panel to open the HP Scanner Tools Utility. Click the
Imprinter tab, and then click Clean Imprinter.
b.
c.
d.
Ensure that the ADF has at least one piece of paper in the input tray.
In the HP Scanner Tools Utility, click Test Imprinter.
If the imprinter print quality is good, continue scanning. Otherwise, replace the print cartridge.
