and recycling programme

HP is committed to providing customers with inventive, high quality products and

services that are environmentally sound throughout their life cycles, and to conducting

its operations in an environmentally responsible manner. This commitment

continues to be one of the guiding principles that are core to HP’s values.

Recycling HP LaserJet print cartridges

Returned original HP LaserJet print cartridges are disassembled at a recycling

plant in France, where more than 95 per cent of the material can subsequently be

recovered and reclaimed. In a first step, the print cartridge components are sorted

and separated into plastics, metals and residual toner powder. The plastics can

then be melted; aluminium and other metal components such as screws and metal

springs are processed or reused after a thorough quality check. Residual toners

are used to recover pigments and energy. Plastics and metals serve as the basis

for producing a wide variety of new products, for example wire spools, buttons,

property markers and other useful articles.

Recycling HP inkjet print cartridges

Returned original HP inkjet print cartridges are shipped to the state of the art

recycling facility in Germany, where they are sorted and granulated to remove the

ink. After washing them, the print cartridges’ fragments are separated and then

processed to recover plastics and metals. Recyclable materials derived from print

cartridges are used to make car parts, trays for microchip fabrication, copper

wire, or steel plates – just to give a few examples. Depending on the model,

up to 70 per cent by weight of each print cartridge can be separated into its

individual components and subsequently recycled. The remaining parts that

cannot be used (ink, foam, composite parts) are disposed of in an environmentally

responsible manner.

The HP anti-counterfeiting

programme

With the HP anti-counterfeiting (ACF) programme, HP fights counterfeiters and

perpetrators of product fraud in the printing supplies business. Actively defending

the quality and reliability of HP printing supplies and the HP trademark in the

market, the programme puts a special focus on HP business partners. Regular

information and education on ongoing activities and developments help to

recognise counterfeit products and product fraud, to report suspect products,

and to competently answer questions of customers regarding this issue.

Information and support

On an ongoing basis, HP provides business partners with information about the

ACF programme and latest developments on the market, offers new supporting

material, and gives regular updates on HP’s ACF activities. Partners learn about

product- and sales-related indicators of counterfeiting in the printing supplies

business, thus enabling them to protect their businesses and customers from

becoming victims of counterfeiters.

Successful programme set-up

The HP ACF programme owes a great part of its success to the HP business

partners and end users who report suspect products to HP. Their leads are

followed up by a network of anti-fraud consultants around the world who gather

additional evidence to review and build a case. Once a case has been developed,

HP decides on the best legal action to take. This can result in confiscation of

products as part of a criminal or civil prosecution. The HP anti-counterfeiting

programme was started in March 2002, and in the first year, HP already received

more than 700 leads which resulted in over 250,000 counterfeit products seized

in police raids or civil seizures. The number of leads, investigations and legal

actions has been rising since.

Special reporting processes

The HP anti-counterfeiting programme features easy to use reporting processes,

including an ACF e-mail address and local ACF telephone hotlines listed on a

special HP ACF website. The website provides further information on the HP anti-

counterfeiting programme, the HP security label and indicators for counterfeit

products and product fraud.

HP smart print supplies

The HP Smart Print Supplies system is the latest technological innovation in

printing supplies from HP and is activated every time an HP LaserJet smart print

cartridge is installed in an HP LaserJet printer. With its own built-in smart chip,

each smart print cartridge communicates and interacts with the printer and software

to provide more accurate supplies monitoring, convenient supplies ordering,

cartridge authentication and a number of significant print quality enhancements.

In terms of supplies monitoring, the real-time management of toner levels can

substantially improve printer productivity. By accurately determining the level of

toner available, the system can provide an estimate of the number of pages

remaining in the print cartridge, enabling users to determine whether the job can

be completed. This constant monitoring also provides data on cartridge use for job

accounting and budgeting needs.

When a cartridge is nearing the end of its working life, the system can be used

to send an email alert to notify designated individuals that supplies will need

reordering. And now, with the development of Internet Enabled Supplies

Ordering (IESO)*, the system can be configured to launch an ‘Order Supplies’

website, where the products needed will have been pre-selected.

HP Smart Print Supplies also ensures optimum output, reliability and ease of use.

The toner-sealing strip is automatically removed when the cartridge is installed;

a ‘shake-free’ cartridge design redistributes toner to ensure that none goes to

waste; and dynamic electro-photographic adjustments constantly optimise the print

process to ensure consistent print quality throughout the life of the print cartridge.

HP Color LaserJet toner

cartridge technology

Your customers are actively looking for solutions that will make in-house colour

printing commercially viable and the development of a number of new HP Color

LaserJet series is doing just that. Building on this momentum, and playing a key

role in driving customer migration from mono to colour printing, are our HP Color

LaserJet print cartridges.

Like mono HP LaserJet print cartridges, they are purpose-designed to interact with

HP printers and media to deliver high quality results with maximum reliability, and

they feature the latest HP Smart Print technologies to provide accurate supplies

monitoring and consistency of print quality.

However, the technology behind colour printing is clearly more complex: how do

four basic toner colours create millions of other colours? In the case of HP Color

LaserJet printers, a technology called ImageREt precisely places tiny dots of toner

in adjacent or overlapping positions while varying the size of nearby colour dots.

This combination of four colours – in extremely tiny patterns and sizes – represents

consistent colour images to the human eye.

Individual toner particles must be uniform in size to ensure colour accuracy is true

to the eye. The particles must also be placed very accurately on the page. And

since most printed areas are a combination of colours, the correct amount and

placement of toner is critical to accurate colour reproduction.

Ultraprecise spherical colour toners

Most toner is mechanically grown, which produces an irregular toner particle.

Our chemically grown colour toners are spherical in shape, with highly consistent

colour. The particles are very small in size, allowing for very precise placement to

create colours that are more accurate and consistent.

The smooth, spherical surfaces of HP toner particles are precisely engineered to

allow for higher and more uniform charge capability. Furthermore, their round

shape helps the toner flow easily, evenly and quickly over the image areas and

their uniformity ensures accurate colour. Each of these characteristics works

together to stabilize the adhesion between toner particles and drum surface,

enabling accurate and efficient transfer of toner.

Oil-free toner fusing

Furthermore, unlike many competitive colour laser printers, HP’s colour toners do

not require the use of oil in the toner fusing process. This feature allows the much

sought after option of automatic duplex (two-sided) printing. And, of course,

HP toners offer greater print permanence and archival durability over rival solid

wax and inkjet technologies.

All HP Color LaserJet printing systems are designed and calibrated to work with

chemically grown toner to ensure optimal results, an integrated system approach

which delivers high quality professional printing and consistent colour.

The end results of these major advances in colour toner technology are long-lasting

outputs, more colours, finer photographic details, better transitions between colours

and solid, smooth area fills. And the precise matching of toner, print cartridge

design, colour software and printing process components ensures reliable, high

supplies warranties

HP warranties are clear, fair and easy to manage, giving you and your customers the

knowledge that any defects will be resolved without question. This at-a-glance guide

explains the levels of warranty that apply to different HP LaserJet printing supplies.

Monochrome print cartridges

HP LaserJet print cartridges are warranted to be free from defects in materials and

workmanship until the HP toner is depleted.

Colour toner bottles and kits

HP LaserJet colour toner bottles and kits for the HP Color LaserJet 5/5m are warranted

to be free from defects in workmanship for 90 days from date of purchase.

New colour cartridges and kits

HP Color LaserJet cartridges are warranted to be free from defects in material and

workmanship until the HP toner is depleted. The HP LaserJet Drum Kit is warranted to be

free from defects in materials and workmanship until the ‘low-life’ message appears.

The HP LaserJet Fuser and Transfer Kit are warranted to be free from defects in materials

and workmanship for one year or until the ‘low-life’ message appears, whichever

comes first.

Not covered

Warranties do not cover cartridges which have been refilled, emptied or abused,

or those which are missing or have been tampered with in any way.

Using non-HP LaserJet print cartridges

If a non-HP print cartridge is found to be the direct cause of printer failure or damage,

HP will not cover the repair related to that non-HP cartridge.

Returning HP product

In the event that a cartridge proves defective, the customer should return it to the

place of purchase, where a replacement will be given. Customers should provide

their name, address, and phone number, as well as a brief description of the problem.

Inkjet printing system for

4, 6, 7 or 8 colour printing

Building on our proven HP Photoret IV technology – which enables switching

between standard 4-ink CMYK printing and photo quality 6-ink printing –

we have now developed our most advanced printing technology to date,

HP Photoret Pro. This breakthrough development, which enables printing

of more than 72.9 million colours, is based around four cartridges:

• HP No. 56 – a black cartridge delivering 17 picolitre drops of pigment-based,

fade resistant black ink

• HP No. 57 – a tri--colour cartridge containing full dye-load inks in cyan,

magenta and yellow

• HP No. 58 – a tri--chamber photo cartridge containing light dye-load photo inks

in light cyan and light magenta and a dye-based black ink, specially

formulated to resist fading

• HP No. 59 – a tri-chamber grey photo cartridge containing specially

formulated, dye-based light grey, dark grey and photo black inks

8-ink HP Photoret Pro printing makes use of three cartridges at once, the HP No. 57,

No. 58 and No. 59 (9 inks in total but 2 black). This combination delivers photo

lab image quality in colour or black & white and, when using HP Premium Plus

Photo Paper, prints that resist fading for generations. For fast printing of rich,

black text-heavy documents, the No. 59 cartridge can be swapped out for the

No. 56 cartridge.

6-ink photo printers make use of the No. 57 and No. 58 cartridges, with the

No. 56 and No. 59 cartridges available as optional extras that can be swapped

in and out as required. And for graphics, everyday photo prints and other colour

documents, the HP No. 56 black cartridge and HP No. 57 tri-colour cartridge

work together to produce superb quality results on any media.

HP Photoret Pro

precision technology

HP Photoret Pro Precision Technology uses 8-ink colour printing to deliver ultimate

image quality, with bright, vibrant colours for realistic photo quality, light tones

for natural looking skin tones and accurate colour reproduction, and an extensive

range of true greys and blacks for outstanding black & white prints.

HP photo cartridges use specially formulated inks that work with HP Premium Plus

Photo Paper to provide extended fade resistance for long lasting digital prints. In

addition, HP Photoret Pro precision technology uses ultra small ink drops (4-5 pl),

precise dot placement, a unique application of halftoning algorithms, and

advanced colour imaging technologies.

These all combine to deliver:

• broader range of colours, including an extensive range of lighter tones for

natural looking skin tones and more accurate colour reproduction

• true neutral greys and deep photo black for impressive black & white photo

prints – no mixing of colour inks to create greys

And by layering up to 32 ultra small drops within a single dot, HP Photoret Pro

printers require a smaller amount of data than printers needing to process higher

dpi, so printing is faster.

4800 optimised dpi mode

While HP Photoret Pro delivers exceptional photo quality, there is also a

4800 x 1200-optimised dpi mode which combines high-resolution image

rendering with HP‘s intelligent dot placement to deliver stunning photo quality

on premium photo papers.

This mode takes advantage of precise detail in high-resolution source files, but the

increased requirement in terms of hard disk space and processing can result in

slower printing speeds.

In parallel with HP Photoret Pro and 8-ink printing, we have also introduced a

range of digital imaging technologies which intelligently analyse and enhance

images to improve the quality of digital photos.

These include contrast enhancement, digital flash, smartfocus, sharpness and

smoothing, and are designed to deliver brighter, more vibrant colours and sharper,

clearer image detail for results that rival the quality of traditional photo finishing.

Each ‘tool‘ is automatically applied when printing in best modes and can be

selected to adjust images to suit individual needs or preferences.

Contrast enhancement

Brightens images that appear dark or hazy due to poor lighting conditions, adding

depth and clarity to the entire image. If the original image is fine, no changes are

made, so customers get great results whatever the quality of the original.

Digital flash

Enhances image detail in dark, shadow areas or areas that appear too light or

over exposed. This tool can improve images in which a particular area is

obscured by shadows or bleached out by bright sunshine.

Smartfocus

Sharpens details in low-resolution images printed from the Internet, CD-ROM

or multimedia applications, ensuring optimal quality for everything from family

photos to web content.

Sharpness

Enhances image detail to increase the quality of digital photos; detail areas

appear sharper and crisper for realistic, photo-quality output.

Smoothing

Intelligently removes ‘noise’, unwanted artefacts caused by image compression,

There’s more to paper than

meets the eye

While it’s easy to understand the investment that goes into developing HP printers

and HP print cartridges, to many customers paper is just paper, a commodity that

has no real bearing on print quality. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Even the most basic photo paper consists of five separate layers, each with its

own specific role to play. The most important of these is the ink receiving layer

(IRL), also called top coating. And there are two different coating technologies

available to paper scientists: porous coating (fast drying) and swellable coating

(excellent lightfastness).

Our understanding of these technologies, combined with the ability to engineer

papers, inks, toners and printers together, is a major factor behind the versatility

of the HP paper and film range.

The factors that determine the suitability and performance of a paper are

mechanical performance and imaging quality – and both are inextricably linked

in with the quality of the ink or toner used for printing.

Mechanical issues that are being addressed in the development of a paper include

flatness, stiffness, weight, dry time and resistance to wrinkling, not to mention the

surface appearance fusing properties, resistance to deferring to transfer voltage and

reliability with which it can be picked up and handled by the printer.

In terms of imaging, HP’s scientists are looking at everything from brightness,

opacity and permeability to dot gain, gloss and other treatments, all to ensure rich

vivid colours, crisp accurate text and graphics and the desired performance of dry

time and fade resistance.

New media types, such as the HP Scrim Banner, are developed for existing

printing platforms to suit your evolving needs, our ink and printer engineering

specialists will ensure that their expertise becomes part of the media

development process.

Environmental chambers are primary testing tools in the media invention and

testing process, where environmental variants such as temperature and humidity

can be scientifically controlled and measured. HP printers, inks and media are

tested together under these conditions to ensure that the complete HP printing

platform performs perfectly under every environmental condition.

Under these stringent testing conditions, performance flaws, such as the tendency

for ink to bleed excessively on certain media in hot and humid conditions, can be

identified. Adjustments can then be made to the media, like changing the coating

chemistry or the substrate to counteract these tendencies, or even to the whole

printing platform, to ensure that the HP Designjet platform always delivers

consistently outstanding results.

HP uses three media coating types, porous, swellable and HP hybrid

porous/swellable, to ensure that there is always a media type to suit every

possible user need.

Bond and coated paper

Used by a wide range of large format printer users where economical printing

is a must. Produces crisp, sharp text and lines and handles up to medium density

larger-area fills.

Technical paper

HP offers an array of printing materials aimed at technical applications such as

architecture, engineering and construction (AEC), mechanical drawings (CAD),

and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). HP technical products produce a

range of outputs, but the most common applications require crisp black text and

fine line accuracy as well as medium-density area fills.

Film (technical and graphic)

In addition to the production of sharp lines, the technical user may require plots

for archiving future multiple reproduction and overlays. Graphic Polyester films are

specially optimised by HP to provide vivid and sharp image quality, and are

electrostatically treated for perfect integration with the HP Designjet printer and

ink system.

Photographic paper

HP offers a wide variety of photographic papers to meet the most demanding

and varied needs of different customers. From Universal products in satin and high

gloss finishes, offering superior image quality at affordable prices, to premium

photographic material specially designed to provide the best photographic image

quality and durability, as well as achieving throughput targets for specific ink and

Proofing paper

HP Proofing Papers accurately capture your color concepts. HP offers a variety of

media such as the HP Proofing Matte or the HP Proofing Gloss or Semi-Gloss to

meet proofing application needs. Prior to large-run printing, use HP Proofing Papers

to ensure customer satisfaction and maximize efficiency. HP Proofing Papers can

also help generate interest in your ideas before moving to the next step in production.

Backlit material

Illuminated backlit displays are commonly found in indoor and outdoor locations

such as airports, shopping malls, stadiums, and bus stops. HP offers both dye and

UV ink-compatible products, such as the award-winning HP Colorlucent Backlit to

support backlit applications. For eye-catching vivid color and the deepest blacks,

which are the hardest to create, HP Colorlucent Backlit has patented technology

and superior results for outdoor applications and longer-term indoor applications.

HP Backlit Film Reverse Print Matte is another option, a very flexible product that

can be printed with dye inks and mounted in a lightbox with the printed or

unprinted side showing through the lightbox.

Self-adhesive material and laminate

HP offers a wide variety of self-adhesive products including coated paper, vinyl,

polypropylene and polyester film. A wide range of applications are specifically

supported, ranging from decal creation with HP Colorfast Vinyl with pressure

sensitive adhesive, to window signage creation with HP Two-View Cling, which has

a low tack adhesive on the back that allows the user to reposition the sample without

leaving any adhesive behind, making this product ideal for window displays.

Banner and sign material

The banner product category covers a diverse group of products. Banners often

take a lot of handling and must be strong enough to resist tears because they’re

often long, can be wrapped around objects, and may need resistance to wind

and weather. Hanging banners require drapeability as well as tear-strength.

HP’s specifications go well beyond requirements for the LTO logo. Logo tests do

not measure product quality because this would prevent a truly open standard

where customers are able to choose the widest selection of products based on

It’s false to assume that all tapes are the same or even that a single brand of tape

will always perform in the same way. HP is always vigilant.

The best possible microscope to test media is a tape drive, or rather hundreds of

thousands of tape drives in R&D and Manufacturing. HP is unique amongst media

Exceptional strength and durability, reduced error rates and long recording life

• Optimum compatibility with HP StorageWorks AIT tape drives and libraries and AIT drives

and libraries from other manufacturers.

• HP AIT drives and media employ a helical scan recording method in which data tracks are

written at an angle with respect to the edge of the tape. This technique requires fewer passes

over the drive heads to fill the tape and thus greatly enhances the life span of both the drive

and media.

• HP AIT data cartridges contain an Advanced Metal Evaporated (AME) recording layer

consisting of almost 100% cobalt. This, combined with the Diamond-Like-Carbon (DLC)

coating, creates a smooth and hard surface. AME technology enables a high recording

density, improved signal-to-noise ratio and significantly lower tape tension to improve the

longevity of the media.

• MIC (Memory in Cassette) is a 64k memory chip which is embedded in all HP AIT data

cartridges. It allows high-speed media load, file search and read/write access. MIC offers

fast load and unload times and access to data in less than 27 seconds – from anywhere

on the tape.
