Thank you for purchasing the Powerline Networking Adapter (the Adapter). Most people don’t enjoy buying long and expensive
Ethernet cables or pulling the cables from one place to another, but the Adapter offers one of the easiest ways to enjoy home or
small-business networking. Users can now experience a total network solution with the Adapter. The Powerline Networking Adapter
operates on the HomePlug® Powerline Specification 1.0 Turbo standard, providing up to 85Mbps* bandwidth over home AC wiring.
Since the home power lines are the most pervasive medium in households with multiple outlets in every room, the Adapter allows
multiple home desktop and notebook computers to be networked to share an Internet connection, printers, and files, and play
games without any additional wiring. Note that you need at least two Adapters to create a powerline network.
The installation of the Adapter only requires that a 10/100Mbps Ethernet port is available on your device. This makes the Powerline
Networking Adapter compatible with any device, including Mac, Windows, and UNIX machines.
For security, all HomePlug devices are equipped with 56-bit DES encryption. The private home power grid plus encryption makes
HomePlug significantly more secure than competing technologies.
The Powerline Networking Adapter provides the best solution for no-new-wires home networking. With easy plug-and-play
installation, and the reliability of HomePlug Ethernet’s products, the Powerline Networking Adapter is the best solution for
high-speed networking.

hardware setup
Installation of the Powerline Networking Adapters takes only
minutes and does not require setting up long wires throughout
the house. Simply plug the Adapters into the wall and connect
the Ethernet cable into your device. You may optionally install the
included utility to monitor your powerline network. This utility is not
required for operation.
1. Plug your network cable into an RJ45 network adapter port.
2. Plug the other end of your network cable into the RJ45 port located at
the bottom of the Adapter.
3. Plug the power cable into the power connector at the back of
the Adapter.
4. Plug the power plug of your power cable directly into a power outlet
in the wall.
Note: do not plug the device into a UPs or power strip with surge
protection as they may filter the powerline signal.
5. Repeat this process for the second Adapter

The “Main” tab shows the HomePlug units that are connected to the
current computer and other devices on the network. It also tells you
the MAC address of each device. The MAC address of the Adapter
that is currently connected to the PC running this utility is displayed
at the top of the window next to the “Local” network name. The utility
lets you refresh the window, if you change devices, and also allows
you to connect to different networks if multiple units are connected to
your computer.
overview
The Adapter uses 56-bit DES encryption to block access from the
outside. The key is set by using the HomePlug Configuration Utility
on the CD. By default, the protection is enabled. However, it is
recommended that you change the default network password. All your
HomePlug devices must use the same network password in order for
the computers to be networked. Make sure that all devices are loaded
with the same network password.
Note: If the link quality is poor, and appears red, or if the MAC address
of any of the units connected to this computer appears to be all 0s,
your Adapter may be unreachable via the powerline network. Please
plug it into a different outlet for better signal quality. Also, make sure
the device is not plugged into a power strip.
diagnose Powerline Network
Part 1: diagnose a local homePlug device
Note: If you do not see ANY units in the device status, and there is a
device connected to your computer, try unplugging and re-plugging
all devices. Also make sure that the cable connecting your computer
to the HomePlug device is the right type and is working correctly. If
everything seems to be correct, and you do not see anything in the
“Device” window, try rebooting your computer. If the problem still
persists, please contact technical support.
Double-click the “Belkin HomePlug Utility” icon on your desktop to open
the utility shown in the screen below.

Part 2: diagnose a Network homePlug device
setting Up security on a local homePlug device
The “Main” tab shows all the other HomePlug units on your powerline
network. It represents them by MAC address, and also shows the
available bandwidth to each unit (units farther away from the current
computer might have a lower data rate). If you add or subtract units from
your home network, you might want to re-scan, by clicking the “Scan”
button. This will re-scan the network and refresh with any changes.
Note: Only units with the same network password will appear; please
verify that they all have the same network password (case-sensitive).
Note: If a unit shows a MAC address of all 0s, this unit may not have
a solid connection, or may not connect at all. If this is the case,
please contact technical support.
Note: If there are units in your home that do not appear in this
network scan, unplug and re-plug all devices (only do this with
the units that do not appear in the network screen). If the problem
persists, move the unit closer to this current unit (adjacent plugs in
the same wall socket is preferred). If the problem still persists and
that unit still does not appear on the network, then the unit may be
defective and you will need to contact technical support. Otherwise,
if you view the unit working, distance might be the only issue.
The networked HomePlug devices can be renamed by selecting the
device and clicking “Rename”.
The “Privacy” tab allows you to change the network password to the
unit that is currently connected to this computer. This network password
encrypts all data that is sent from this unit using 56-bit data encryption
standard (DES). The DES encryption is very secure and difficult to crack.
Note: Every unit on your home network MUST have the same Private
Network Name (also referred to as the “network password”) in order
for connectivity to be established throughout your home. The default
network name is “HomePlug”.

setting Up security on a Network homePlug device
1. You will have to go back to the “Main” tab first to enter the
DEK (Device Encryption Key) for each networked HomePlug
device. Select the device and click “Enter Password”.
3. You can change the password for all networked devices from
one computer using this utility, instead of changing the
password individually.
Note: The deK is unique for eACh homePlug device. To use this
utility, you will need to input the deK for each unit.
4. The network password can be changed on all devices on which
DEKs have been entered. The “Privacy” tab allows users to use one
primary computer to control the network password of all units on
the home network.
5. On the “Privacy” tab, simply change the private network name
(network password) and click “Set all devices”. Please ensure that the
DEKs of all devices have been entered before performing this step.
Otherwise, you will lose connectivity to devices that do not have this
new network password.
2. In the following window, enter the DEK located on the
bottom of each device into the “Password” field. Note that
this password is different from the network password.
