INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the world of networking with 3Com®. In the
modern business environment, communication and sharing
information is crucial. Computer networks have proved to
be one of the fastest modes of communication but, until
recently, only large businesses could afford the networking
advantage. The OfficeConnect® product range from 3Com
has changed this, bringing networks to the small office.
If you wish to extend an existing Ethernet network into Fast
Ethernet, adding a Dual Speed Hub 16 can offer a more
cost-effective migration path than adding both a 100Mbps
hub and a 10/100Mbps switch.
Figure 1 Small Network With OfficeConnect Hub
OfficeConnect
Dual Speed Hub 16
The OfficeConnect Dual Speed Hub 16 is ideal for creating
small networks. It is compact and attractively designed for
desktop use and can be used with other OfficeConnect
products. This product forms part of the OfficeConnect
range which neatly stack together with the OfficeConnect
stacking clip.
The OfficeConnect Dual Speed Hub 16 is an easy-to-use
Class II hub (repeater) with sixteen 10/100BASE-TX ports. It
allows you to set up a network with both Ethernet
(10Mbps) and Fast Ethernet (100Mbps) workstations and
other devices (a Class II hub can be connected to another
Fast Ethernet hub, a Class I hub cannot).
10Mbps
100Mbps
If you need to connect more workstations, simply use the
stacking clip to connect another OfficeConnect hub to form
a stack.
When referring to the OfficeConnect Dual Speed Hub 16,
this guide uses the term ‘Hub’. Each port on the Hub can
be connected to either a 10BASE-T (Ethernet) or a
100BASE-TX (Fast Ethernet) device. The port senses the
speed of the connected equipment and operates at the
appropriate speed.

3 One suitable TP cable for each workstation.
Before You Start
In order to comply with the 10BASE-T standard, ports
designed for workstation connections have been
marked with the graphical symbol ‘x’. This denotes a
crossover in the port’s internal wiring, for example 1x,
2x, 3x...
Your OfficeConnect hub comes with:
One power adapter for use with the OfficeConnect hub.
A Product Registration card for you to fill out and return.
Four rubber feet.
A stacking clip.
Twisted Pair (TP) Cables
To connect your workstations and other equipment to the
Hub, use ‘straight-through’ TP cables with RJ-45 connectors
(all OfficeConnect products use RJ-45 type connectors). A
‘straight-through’ cable is one where each pin of one
connector is connected to the same pin of the other
connector. Cables can be shielded (screened) or unshielded;
we recommend that you use shielded cable. Cables used for
100BASE-TX or 10/100BASE-TX connections must be data
grade (Category 5). Your supplier should stock suitable
cables.
Two unit labels and eight cable ties.
An OfficeConnect Network Assistant CD-ROM.
The extra parts mentioned in the next section are not
supplied with the hub.

Positioning Your Hub
Securing Your Hub
When installing your OfficeConnect hub, ensure:
There are two slots on the underside of the OfficeConnect
hub which can be used for wall mounting. It is
recommended that you mount the hubs with the LEDs
facing upwards to prevent dust entering the cooling vents.
It is out of direct sunlight and away from sources of
heat.
Cabling is away from power lines, fluorescent lighting
fixtures, and sources of electrical noise such as radios,
transmitters and broadband amplifiers.
When wall mounting the unit, ensure that it is within
reach of the power outlet.
Water or moisture cannot enter the case of the unit.
You need two suitable screws. Ensure that the wall you are
going to use is smooth, flat, dry and sturdy. Make two
screw holes which are 142mm (5.6in.) apart. Use the
template at the back of this guide to mark the position of
the holes. Fix the screws into the wall, leaving their heads
3mm (0.12in.) clear of the wall surface.
Air flow around the unit and through the vents in the
side of the case is not restricted. We recommend you
provide a minimum of 25.4 mm (1in.) clearance.
Remove any connections to the unit and locate it over the
screw heads. When in line, gently push the unit on to the
wall and move it downwards to secure. When making
connections, be careful not to push the unit up and off the
wall.
CAUTION: Only wall mount single units, do not wall
mount stacked units.
Also available from 3Com, is the OfficeConnect Mounting
Unit (part number 3C16765). This allows you to firmly
secure a stack of OfficeConnect devices to the desktop or
onto a shelf in a rack.

must be set to operate in auto-negotiate or half
duplex mode.
If you connect two Dual Speed Hub 16 units directly
together, the link between them operates at
Connecting workstations and other equipment to your Hub
is easy. To connect a workstation to any of the Hubs ports,
use a ‘straight-through’ TP cable. Refer to “Twisted Pair (TP)
Cables” on page 8 for further information.
Fast Ethernet (100Mbps) Configuration Rules
The Dual Speed Hub 16 is a Class II hub. You can connect
directly two Class II Fast Ethernet hubs (Class I Fast Ethernet
hubs cannot be connected directly to other Fast Ethernet
hubs). The total length of cable (A + B + C) between two
workstations, or between a workstation and a non-repeater
piece of equipment (such as a switch), must not exceed
205m (672ft). Each cable (A, B, or C) must not exceed
100m (328ft).
If you are using port 16 to connect a workstation,
ensure the Uplink/Normal switch is set to Normal
(out).
TP cables are very easy to use. To connect a cable, simply
slot the connector into the appropriate RJ-45 port. When
the connector is fully in, its latch locks it in place. To

Checking Hub Connections
When you have connected all the appropriate workstations
and other equipment to the Hub, power on the Hub. For
each port with a connection, a Port Status LED should be
on. If the port is operating at 100Mbps, the corresponding
LED in the upper row of Port Status LEDs is on. If the port is
operating at 10Mpbs, the corresponding LED in the lower
row is on. If neither LED is on, check your connections.

PROBLEM SOLVING
The OfficeConnect Hub has been designed to aid you when
detecting and solving possible problems with your network.
These problems are rarely serious; the cause is usually a
disconnected or damaged cable, or incorrect configuration.
If this section does not solve your problem, contact your
supplier for information on what to do next.
There is a problem with the
Alert LED continuously lit.
network. Check the Port Status LEDs to try to identify the
port that is causing the problem. If one of the Port Status
LEDs is flashing, that port has partitioned, probably due to a
network loop. Examine your connections and remove the
loop. Each piece of equipment needs only one connection
to your Hub.
Perform these actions first:
If you cannot identify such a port, remove the port
connections one at a time, waiting a few seconds between
each port. If the Alert LED goes off, there is either a
network loop (see above), or an excessive amount of traffic
on that port connection. Check the Network Utilization LEDs
to see if the network is heavily loaded (over 80%). Some
pieces of network equipment operate by sending out frames
regularly. Refer to the documentation that accompanies the
piece of network equipment.
Ensure all network equipment is powered on.
Power each piece of network equipment off, wait about
5 seconds and then power each one on.
Check the following symptoms and solutions:
Power LED not lit. Check your power adapter connection.
If there is still no power, you may have a faulty power
adapter which needs replacing with an identical
OfficeConnect power adapter. Do not use any other
power adapter with the Hub.
If the Alert LED is still lit after removing all of your
connections, there may be a problem with your Hub. Turn
off the power, wait about 5 seconds and then power on the
hub. If the Alert LED comes back on continuously, contact
your supplier.
10Mbps Port Status LED lit for a port with a 100Mbps
device connected. This may be because the cable is not of
a high enough quality to carry Fast Ethernet signals (we
recommend you use a Category 5 cable), or due to a
problem with the network card (NIC) of the attached
equipment.

NETWORKING TERMINOLOGY
A Network is a collection of workstations (for example,
IBM-compatible PCs) and other equipment (for example,
printers), connected for the purpose of exchanging
information or sharing resources. Networks vary in size,
some are within a single room, others span continents.
A
segment
is the length of cable connected to a port.
Packets are the units of information your workstations and
other equipment send to each other over the network. A
frame is the data part of the packet and can be unicast
(sent to a single device), multicast (sent to multiple

broadcast
(sent to all devices).
office, that spans no more than a single site.
Bandwidth refers to the amount of network traffic the
Ethernet is a type of LAN, referring to the technology used
to pass information around the network. It operates at
10Mbps (megabits per second).
network can hold at any one time (information capacity)
measured in
bits per second (bps)
. Workstations or
applications that use the network heavily are referred to as
using high bandwidth. Fast Ethernet has a higher
bandwidth than Ethernet, so it can cope with larger
amounts of traffic, which results in faster operation.
Fast Ethernet is a type of LAN that runs up to 10 times
faster than standard Ethernet. It operates at 100Mbps.
10BASE-T and 100BASE-TX are the names given to the
Ethernet protocol that runs over Twisted Pair (TP) cable.
10BASE-T runs at 10Mbps whilst 100BASE-TX operates at
100Mbps. The OfficeConnect hub uses RJ-45 type
connectors for connecting your TP network.
A half duplex link allows information to flow in either
direction, but not in either direction simultaneously.
Collisions
are part of normal ethernet operation and occur
if other network equipment attempts to transmit at the
same time. A sudden sustained increase in the number of
collisions may indicate a problem with the device.
A Network Loop occurs when two pieces of network
equipment are connected by more than one path. Your hub
detects this and partitions (isolates) one of its ports to
break the loop.
