				IMPORTANT SAFETY
					INSTRUCTIONS
					READ BEFORE OPERATING EQUIPMENT
This product was designed and manufactured to meet strict quality and
safety standards. There are, however, some installation and operation
precautions which you should be particularly aware of.
					11. Grounding or Polarization-This video product is equipped with
a polarized alternating-current line plug (a plug having one blade
wider than the other). This plug will fit into the power outlet
only one way. This is a safety feature. If you are unable to insert
the plug fully into the outlet, try reversing the plug. If the plug
should still fail to fit, contact your electrician to replace your
obsolete outlet. Do not defeat the safety purpose of the
					polarized plug.
					1. Read Instructions - All the safety and operating instructions should
be read before the appliance is operated.
					2. Retain Instructions-The safety and operating instructions should
					be retained for future reference.
					3. Heed Warnings-All warnings on the appliance and in the operating
					instructions should be adhered to.
					4. Follow Instructions-All operating and use instructions should be
					followed.
					AC POLARIZED PLUG
					5. Cleaning-Unplug this video product from the wall outlet before
cleaning. Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosol cleaners. Use a
					damp cloth for cleaning.
					12. Power-Cord Protection-Power-supply cords should be routed
so that they are not likely to be walked on or pinched by items
placed upon or against them, paying particular attention to
cords at plugs, convenience receptacles, and the point where
					they exit from the appliance.
					6. Attachments-Do not use attachments not recommended by the
video product manufacturer as they may cause hazards.
					13. Protective Attachment Plug - The appliance is equipped with an
attachment plug having overload protection. This is a safety
feature. See Instruction Manual for replacement or resetting of
protective device. If replacement of the plug is required, be sure
the service technician has used a replacement plug specified by
the manufacturer that has the same overload protection as the
					original plug.
					7. Water and Moisture-Do not use this video product near water-
for example, near a bath tub, wash bowl, kitchen sink, or laundry
tub, in a wet basement, or near a swimming pool, and the like.
					8. Accessories-Do not place this video product on an unstable
cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or table. The video product may fall,
causing serious injury to a child or adult, and serious damage to
the appliance. Use only with a cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or
table recommended by the manufacturer, or sold with the
video product. Any mounting of the appliance should follow the
manufacturer’s instructions, and should use a mounting
					accessory recommended by the manufacturer.
					14. Lightning-For added protection for this video product receiver
during a lightning storm, or when it is left un-attended and
unused for long periods of time, unplug it from the wall outlet
and disconnect the antenna or cable system. This will prevent
damage to the video product due to lightning and power-line
					surges.
					9. Ventilation-Slots and openings in the cabinet are provided for
ventilation and to ensure reliable operation of the video
product and to protect it from overheating, and these openings
must not be blocked or covered. The openings should never be
blocked by placing the video product on a bed, sofa, rug, or
other similar surface. This video product should never be
placed near or over a radiator or heat register. This video
product should not be placed in a built-in installation such as a
bookcase or rack unless proper ventilation is provided or the
manufacturer’s instructions have been adhered to.
					15. Power Lines-An outside antenna system should not be located
in the vicinity of overhead power lines or other electric light or
power circuits, or where it can fall into such power lines or
circuits. When installing an outside antenna system, extreme
care should be taken to keep from touching such power lines
or circuits as contact with them might be fatal.
					16. Overloading-Do not overload wall outlets and extension cords
as this can result in a risk of fire or electric shock.
					10. Power Sources-This video product should be operated only
from the type of power source indicated on the marking label.
If you are not sure of the type of power supply to your home,
consult your appliance dealer or local power company. For
video products intended to operate from battery power, or
other sources, refer to the operating instructions.
					17. Object and Liquid Entry-Never push objects of any kind into
this video product through openings as they may touch
dangerous voltage points or short-out parts that could result in
a fire or electric shock. Never spill liquid of any kind on the
					video product.
				18. Servicing-Do not attempt to service this video product yourself
as opening or removing covers may expose you to dangerous
voltage or other hazards. Refer all servicing to qualified service
					personnel.
					19. Damage Requiring Service-Unplug this video product from the
wall outlet and refer servicing to qualified service personnel under
					the following conditions:
					a. When the power-supply cord or plug is damaged.
					b. If liquid has been spilled, or objects have fallen into the video
					product.
					c. If the video product has been exposed to rain or water.
					d. If the video product does not operate normally by following the
operating instructions. Adjust only those controls that are
covered by the operating instructions as an improper adjustment
of other controls may result in damage and will often require
extensive work by a qualified technician to restore the video
					product to its normal operation.
					e. If the video product has been dropped or the cabinet has been
					damaged.
					f. When the video product exhibits a distinct change in
performance-this indicates a need for service.
					20. Replacement Parts-When replacement parts are required, be
sure the service technician has used replacement parts specified
by the manufacturer or have the same characteristics as the
original part. Unauthorized substitutions may result in fire,
					electric shock or other hazards.
					21. Safety Check-Upon completion of any service or repairs to this
video product, ask the service technician to perform safety checks
to determine that the video product is in proper operating
					condition.
					22. Carts and Stands-The appliance should be used only with a cart
or stand that is recommended by the manufacturer.
					23. An appliance and cart combination should be moved with care.
Quick stops, excessive force, and uneven surfaces may cause
the appliance and cart combination to overturn.

				Introduction
					Reality reproduced:
					Super Audio CD
					SA-12S1:
					reality in sound... and vision
The Super Audio standard is based on Direct Stream
Digital (DSD) technology. This new direct-stream digital
format comprises a 1-bit system that has a digital
sampling frequency that is 64 times higher than that of
conventional audio CD. The results are spectacular: a
frequency response of over 50k Hz and a 120 dB
dynamic range over the entire audible spectrum. Mixed
with as many of the original frequencies as possible, the
audio information audible for human ears sounds much
					more natural.
The SA-12S1 will not only surprise you with its superior
reproduction of almost all existing audio formats.
Connected to your TV, your SA-12S1 presents VCD and
DVD video information as perfect digital studio-quality
images with truly 3-dimensional digital multi-channel
audio. Story sequences can be screened from your own
choice of camera angle. You can break down language
barriers with sound tracks in as many as eight languages,
plus - if available on disc - as many as 16 subtitling
languages. Video becomes a new experience. That makes
the SA-12S1 an essential component in a state-of-the-art
					audio-video system.
All audible frequencies are, after all, embedded in the
frequency range as emitted by the sound source. A
better reproduction does not exist! For the first time
					your ears will relive reality.
					Super Audio CD
You will recognize Super Audio CDs
by the logo. There are three types of
					The next standard: hybrid disc
					Super Audio CDs: single-layer, dual-
layer and hybrid discs. Each type may
The Super Audio CD is the evolution of the CD that
					provides ultra-high-quality sound. Additional features,
including multi-channel, can be offered. On the high
density (HD) Super Audio CD you may have access to
separate areas, containing two-channel stereo and multi-
					channel.
contain two areas of recorded information: a High
Quality Stereo area and a High Quality Multi-channel
					area.
					- The single layer disc may contain both information
					areas.
					- The dual layer disc may contain both information areas
but a double amount of information can be stored on
the disc thanks to the second layer.
					- The hybrid disc may contain not only both information
areas but also a second, standard CD layer, making it
					playable on standard CD players.
Recorded information may vary per area. This is
indicated in the disc inlay. Areas can be selected
separately before or during playback. When playing
Super Audio CDs, the player can be operated via the
keys on the player front and the remote control or via
the On-Screen Display on your TV.
But that is not all! The hybrid version of the SACD
guarantees backward compatibility with the installed base
of CD and DVD players. In addition to the HD layer, the
hybrid disc contains a standard density CD layer with
conventional two-channel stereo CD audio information.
The two layers are read from the same side of the disc.
The HD layer is read by a DVD laser. The bottom
reflective layer with conventional CD sound is read by
the CD laser through the second, semi-transmissive HD
					layer.

				Audio CD (CDDA)
					Video CD
Audio CDs contain music tracks only.
You will recognize these CDs by their
logo. You can play them in conventional
You will recognize Video CDs by the
					logo.
Depending on the material on the disc
(a movie, video clips, a drama series,
style through a stereo system, using the
keys on the remote control and/or front panel, or via the
TV using the On-screen Display (OSD).
etc.), these discs may have one or more tracks, and
tracks may have one or more indexes, as indicated on
the disc case. To make access easy and convenient, your
player lets you move between tracks and between
					indexes.
Note: The DTS audio format discs are only compatible with
the digital outputs for this player. If you play the discs on this
player, distortion sound will come out from the analog
					outputs.
					Regional restriction codes (region number)
Regional restriction codes are built in to SA-12S1 players
and DVD discs for each sales region. If the regional code
of the SA-12S1 player does not match one of the
regional codes of the DVD disc, playback is not possible.
The region number can be found on the rear panel of
the SA-12S1 player. The illustration below shows the
					regions and corresponding region numbers.
					Digital video
					DVD-Video uses state-of-the-art MPEG 2 data
compression technology to register an entire movie on a
single 5-inch disc. DVD’s variable bitrate compression,
running at up to 9.8 Mbits/second, captures even the
most complex images in their original quality.
The crystal-clear digital images have a horizontal
resolution of over 500 lines, with 720 pixels (picture
elements) to each line. This resolution is more than
double that of VHS, superior to Laser Disc, and entirely
comparable with digital masters made in recording
					studios.
DVD-Video discs conform to either the PAL or NTSC
video standard. This dual-standard player can play both
types, and presents them in the best possible way on
					your multi-standard TV screen.
As the universal video system of the future, DVD-Video
offers optimal images on any TV screen.
					DVD-Video
You will recognize DVD-Video discs by
					the logo.
Depending on the material on the disc
(a movie, video clips, a drama series,
etc.), these discs may have one or more Titles, and each
Title may have one or more Chapters. To make access
easy and convenient, your player lets you move between
					Titles and between Chapters.
					4
				Compact discs
					Placement
The glossy side shining like a rainbow is the front side of
the disc, and the side on which the label is printed is the
					back.
Unlike conventional turntables for playing analog discs,
the SA-12S1 reads the information recorded on the disc
from underneath without contacting it using a beam of
laser light. Therefore, the performance of a compact disc
will not degrade like conventional analog records.
G Place the player on a firm, flat surface.
G Keep away from domestic heating equipment and
					direct sunlight.
Handle discs carefully so as not to damage or
					scratch the front side.
G In a cabinet, allow about 2 inches of free space all
around the player for adequate ventilation.
G If the SACD player cannot read SACDs/CDs/DVDs
					correctly, use a commonly-available cleaning
CD/DVD to clean the lens before taking the SACD-
player to be repaired. Other cleaning methods may
destroy the lens. Always keep the tray closed to
					avoid dust on the lens.
G When it is moved from a cold to a warm
environment, allow the SACD player to acclimatize
for at least 2 hours in order to avoid damage. When
suddenly placed in a warm environment, the lens
may cloud over. Playing an SACD/CD/DVD will not
be possible then. Wait until the moisture
					evaporates.
To protect the disc, avoid placing it in the
					following locations:
					- In direct sunlight or near a source of heat like a heater.
					- In a place which is damp or dirty.
					- In a place which could be exposed to rain, such as
					near a window.
Always keep the disc surface clean.
Up to six billion data units are recorded on the front
side of the disc. When cleaning the disc surface, always
be sure to use a special compact disc cleaner and wipe
					as shown below.
					• Do not use conventional record cleaner for analog
records, as this will adversely affect the disc surface.
Store discs properly by placing them in their disc cases.
					• Do not attach a piece of paper or sticker on the label
side of disc. When a disc has a piece of plastic tape or
rental CD label with paste protruded from the edge
or when a disc has a trace of such a sticky object, do
not attempt to play the disc. If such a disc is played
on the CD player, impossibility of taking out the disc
					or other malfunction may result.
					• Write only on the printed side of a CD-R or CD-
RW, and only with a soft felt-tipped pen.
					• Do not use a disc with a special shape.
Do not attempt to play a disc with a special shape
such as a heart-shaped disc or octagonal disc.
Otherwise the equipment malfunction may result

				Playing CD-RW discs
					Enhanced use
This unit can play back the CD-RW (ReWritable) discs
as well as ordinary music CD and CD-R (Recordable)
					discs.
					Filter switch
					ABOUT THE FILTER
G The CD-R and CD-RW discs should contain
properly-recorded TOC information so that they
can be played back. With the CD recorder system,
writing the TOC information in a disc is referred to
as finalizing the disc. A disc cannot be recognized as
a CD disc and played back unless it has been
finalized properly. For details, please read the
instruction manual provided with a CD recorder.
G TOC stands for Table Of Contents and contains
information such as the total number of tracks and
total playing time of the disc.
G This unit can play only the discs recorded in the
CD-DA format designed for music reproduction. Do
not attempt to play a disc containing other data,
such as a CD-ROM for PCs, on this unit.
G As the playback of a CD-RW disc necessitates
partial change of the player setup, it may take longer
time for reading the TOC information than when a
music CD or CD-R disc is played.
Super Audio CDs have a wide playback frequency band
of 100 kHz that is beyond the audible range: this means
that their signals contain ultra-high-range components
that conventional CDs do not have. A conventional
amplifier is often not built to reproduce signals
containing these components, and when Super Audio
CD signals are output in their original state, noise may
be generated, the amplifier's protection circuits may be
activated and/or the speakers may be damaged.
To prevent this sort of trouble from occurring, the unit
incorporates a filter for attenuating the ultra-high-range
components, and the filter can be set STANDARD ALL,
CUSTOM ST, or CUSTOM ALL using a switch on the
rear panel. (This switch is set to STANDARD ALL
when the unit is shipped from the manufacturing plant.)
When the unit is to be connected with a next-
generation amplifier that supports Super Audio CDs and
set the switch to CUSTOM ST OR CUSTOM ALL for
use. This will ensure play with a wider frequency range.
G The format for CD-R and CD-RW discs is stipulated
in the Orange Book, Parts II and III.
Although the two formats are designed to be
compatible, some portions may not capable of being
played back, depending on the recording unit, the
					media, and the playback unit.

					speakers is set to STANDARD
Position 3 : Output signal on all speakers are set to
					CUSTOM.
					Warning:
					* Use the switch at the STANDARD ALL position if the
unit is to be used with a regular amplifier. Otherwise,
the amplifier and/or speakers may be damaged.
					* Even when the unit has been connected with an
amplifier that supports Super Audio CDs, change the
switch to the STANDARD ALL position when recording
Super Audio CD sound on a tape deck, for instance.
					* Do not change the switch setting while playback is in
progress. Doing so could generate electronic noise that
					could damage your speakers, etc.
