FEATURES
Your RadioShack System 997/998 45-Memory
Caller ID is the latest in telephone technology.
The system can display a caller’s telephone num-
ber, name (if available) and the date and time the
call was received. It can store up to 45 single
(number only) or multiple (name and number)
Caller ID records.

Two-Line Liquid Crystal Display — makes it

Call Counter — shows the number of calls you
have received.
New Call Indicator — lets you see at a glance
that you have new calls.
Clock — displays the current time and date as
provided to Caller ID service subscribers by your
local telephone company.
Mounting Options — you can place the system
on a desk or table, or mount it on a wall.

Message Waiting — tells you when you have re-
ceived a voice mail message (if you subscribe to
the message waiting service from your local
phone company).
Note: The Message Waiting feature does not
work with stutter dial tone service.

to your telephone line so you can begin using it

Important Caller ID Information
To use the system’s Caller ID features, you must
be in an area where Caller ID service is available
and you must subscribe to the service.
Where Caller ID is offered, one or more options
are generally available:
• caller’s number only
• caller’s name only
• caller’s name and number

FCC INFORMATION
We have designed your System 997/998 to con-
form to federal regulations, and you can connect
it to most telephone lines. However, each Caller
ID system (and each device, such as a telephone
or answering machine) that you connect to the
telephone line draws power from the line. We re-
fer to this power draw as the system’s ringer
equivalence number or REN. The REN is on the
bottom of your phone.
If you use more than one phone or other device
on the line, add up all the RENs. If the total is
more than five, your phones might not ring. In ru-
ral areas, a total REN of three might impair ringer
operation. If ringer operation is impaired, remove
one of the devices from the line.

Your system complies with Part 68 of FCC Rules.
You must, upon request, provide the Federal
Communications Commission (FCC) registration
number and the REN to your phone company.
These numbers are on the label on the bottom of
the system.
Note: You must not connect your System 997/
998 to:
• coin-operated systems
• party-line systems
• most electronic key telephone systems
This system complies with the limits for a Class B
digital device as specified in Part 15 of FCC
Rules. These limits provide reasonable protection

against radio and TV interference in a residential
area. However, your System 997/998 might
cause TV or radio interference even when it is
operating properly. To eliminate interference, you
can try one or more of the following corrective
measures:
• Reorient or relocate the receiving radio or TV
antenna.
• Increase the distance between the System
997/998 and the radio or TV.
• Use outlets on different electrical circuits for
the System 997/998 and the radio or TV.
Contact your local RadioShack store if the prob-
lem continues.

PREPARATION
INSTALLING BATTERIES
You need four AAA batteries (not supplied) to
power the System 997/998. For the best perfor-
mance, we recommend alkaline batteries, such
as RadioShack Cat. No. 23-555.
Cautions
:
• Always use fresh batteries of the required
size and recommended type.
• Do not mix old and new batteries, different
types of batteries (standard, alkaline, or re-
chargeable), or rechargeable batteries of dif-
ferent capacities.

Follow these steps to install batteries.
1. If you are replacing old batteries, disconnect
both modular line cords from the System
997/998.
2. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the
screw in the battery cover on the bottom of
the system, then slide the cover off.

3. Put four fresh AAA batteries into the com-
partment as indicated by the polarity sym-
bols (+ and –) marked inside.
4. Replace the cover and secure it with the
screw. If you are replacing the batteries, re-
connect the modular line cords.
Replace the batteries when flashes on the dis-
play or the display dims.

Note: If the battery is out of the System 997/998
for more than about a minute, the time and date
will be lost (but be reset when you receive the
next call). The Caller ID records, however, re-
main in the system’s memory.
Cautions:
• Always remove old or weak batteries. Batter-
ies can leak chemicals that can damage your
system.
• Dispose of old batteries promptly and prop-
erly. Do not burn or bury them.

CONNECTING TO A PHONE
1. Disconnect your telephone’s line cord from
the modular phone line jack and plug it into
the system’s PHONE jack.
2. Plug one end of the supplied modular line
cord into the system’s LINE jack.
3. Plug the cord’s other end into the modular
phone line jack.

ANSWERING MACHINE
1. Disconnect the modular line cord that con-
nects your answering machine to the modu-
lar phone line jack, then plug it into the
system’s PHONE jack.

2. Plug one end of the supplied modular line
cord into the system’s LINE jack.
3. Plug the cord’s other end into the modular
phone line jack.
4. Set your answering machine to answer after
two or more rings. This gives the System
997/998 time to record the Caller ID informa-
tion that the phone company sends between
the first and second rings.
Note: Some answering machines block Caller ID
information from the System 997/998. If this hap-
pens, you might have to disconnect the answer-
ing machine.

MOUNTING THE SYSTEM
You can place the System 997/998 on a flat sur-
face such as a desk, or mount it on a wall.
Follow these steps to mount the system on a
wall.
1. Press in the two tabs on the stand and lift the
stand to remove it.

2. Select a location near the phone line jack,
then use the supplied template to mark the
mounting screw locations on the wall.
3. Drill a hole in the wall at each marked loca-
tion.
4. Thread one of the supplied screws into each
hole, letting the head extend 1/8" from the
wall.

5. Align the slots on the back of the system with
the screws in the wall. Then gently push the
system downward to secure it.

OPERATION
If you subscribe to Caller ID service from your
phone company, the phone company sends infor-
mation about the caller, as well as the time and
date, between the first and second rings of every
call you receive. The System 997/998 displays
this information and updates the system’s clock.
(You cannot manually set the date and time.)
CALLflashes on the display during an incoming
call, then the Caller ID information appears. After
20 seconds, the system returns to the clock dis-
play.
NEWflashes on the display to show that you have
received new calls since the last time you re-
viewed Caller ID records.

The System 997/998 can also show other infor-
mation about the call. See “Caller ID Messages”
on Page 25.
REVIEWING CALL RECORDS
Each time you receive a call, your system stores
a Caller ID record that you can review later, even
during a call. A Caller ID record includes:
• call number
• time and date of the call
• caller’s telephone number (if available)
• caller’s name (if available)

through the records. The system shows the call-
er’s number (and name, if available). To see the
date and time the call was received, press DE-
LETE/READ. Press DELETE/READ again to return.
END OF LIST appears when you scroll before
the first or after the last Caller ID record.
Note: The System 997/998 shows up to 10 digits
of an incoming phone number. If the number is
longer, you see only the last 10 digits.

DELETING CALLER ID
RECORDS
To delete a single Caller ID record, repeatedly
press REVIEW
or
until you see the record
you want to delete, then hold down DELETE/
READ until the record flashes and disappears
from the display. The next record appears, or, if
no other calls are stored, NOCALLSappears.
To delete all Caller ID records, wait until the Sys-
tem 997/998 shows the clock display, then hold
down DELETE/READ for about four seconds.
ERASE ALL... flashes, then NOCALLS ap-
pears indicating that all records were deleted.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE
Your RadioShack System 997/998 45-Memory
Caller ID is an example of superior design and
craftsmanship. The following suggestions will
help you care for your system so you can enjoy it
for years.
Keep the system dry. If it gets wet, wipe
it dry immediately. Liquids might contain
minerals that can corrode the electronic
circuits.
Use and store the system only in nor-
mal temperature environments. Tem-
perature extremes can shorten the life
of electronic devices, damage batter-
ies, and distort or melt plastic parts.

Keep the system away from dust and
dirt, which can cause premature wear
of parts.
Handle the system gently and carefully.
Dropping it can damage circuit boards
and cases and can cause the system to
work improperly.
Use only fresh batteries of the required
size and recommended type. Batteries
can leak chemicals that damage your
system’s electronic parts.
Wipe the system with a damp cloth oc-
casionally to keep it looking new. Do
not use harsh chemicals, cleaning sol-
vents, or strong detergents to clean the
system.

Modifying or tampering with the system’s internal
components can cause a malfunction and might
invalidate your system’s warranty and void your
FCC authorization to operate it. If your system is
not performing as it should, take it to your local
RadioShack store for assistance. If the trouble is
affecting the telephone lines, the phone company
can ask you to disconnect your system until you
have resolved the problem.

THE FCC WANTS YOU TO
KNOW
In the unlikely event that your System 997/998
causes problems on the telephone line, the tele-
phone company can disconnect your service.
The telephone company normally attempts to no-
tify you in advance. If advance notice is not prac-
tical, the telephone company notifies you as soon
as possible and advises you of your right to file a
complaint with the FCC.
Also, the telephone company can make changes
to its lines, equipment, operations, or procedures
that could affect the operation of this device. The
telephone company notifies you of these changes

in advance so you can take the necessary steps
to prevent interruption of your telephone service.
LIGHTNING
Your system has built-in protection circuits to re-
duce the risk of damage from surges in telephone
and power line current. These protection circuits
meet or exceed the FCC requirements. However,
lightning striking the telephone or power lines can
damage your system.
Lightning damage is not common. Nevertheless,
if you live in an area that has severe electrical
storms, we suggest that you unplug the tele-
phone system during storms to reduce the possi-
bility of damage.

This product is warranted by RadioShack against manufacturing de-
fects in material and workmanship under normal use for one (1) year

In the event of a product defect during the warranty period, take the
product and the RadioShack sales receipt as proof of purchase date
to any RadioShack store. RadioShack will, at its option, unless oth-
erwise provided by law: (a) correct the defect by product repair with-
out charge for parts and labor; (b) replace the product with one of the
same or similar design; or (c) refund the purchase price. All replaced
parts and products, and products on which a refund is made, be-
come the property of RadioShack. New or reconditioned parts and
products may be used in the performance of warranty service. Re-
paired or replaced parts and products are warranted for the remain-
der of the original warranty period. You will be charged for repair or
replacement of the product made after the expiration of the warranty
period.
This warranty does not cover: (a) damage or failure caused by or at-
tributable to acts of God, abuse, accident, misuse, improper or ab-
