INSTALLATION
71/2-inch wide by 71/4-inch deep (57 ¥
190 ¥ 186 mm) mounting area.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN
THE INSTALLATION
Note: If the mounting area is too
large, you might be able to mount the
stereo with an in-dash installation kit,
available at your local RadioShack
store. Follow the installation kit’s in-
structions to mount the stereo.
Before you install your stereo, read all
the instructions in this owner’s manu-
al. You should be able to answer all of
these questions about your vehicle’s
electrical and sound systems.
• Which terminal in my vehicle’s
fuse box supplies power even
when the ignition is turned off?
Cautions:
• Make sure the stereo will not tilt
up more than 30 degrees when it
is mounted.
• Which terminal in my vehicle’s
fuse box is for accessories?
• Be sure to avoid obstructions be-
hind the mounting surface.
• How do I connect a wire to the
fuse box?
Also, be aware that installation in your
vehicle might require cutting or modi-
fying your vehicle.
Routing Speaker Wires
If you install speakers, avoid routing
the speaker wires near moving parts
or sharp edges. You can usually route
them along the wiring channel be-
neath the vehicle’s door facings by
carefully removing the molding that
holds the carpet in place. After you
route the speaker wires, replace the
molding.
Place the stereo as close as possible
to the selected mounting location. We
recommend that you install the stereo
by temporarily connecting it to ground
and power, optional components, and
your speakers. Then test the connec-
tions, disconnect the stereo, mount it in
your vehicle, and reconnect it. The in-
structions in this manual are arranged
in this order.
Removing the Shipping
Screw
Preparing the Mounting Area
The shipping screw helps protect the
stereo’s CD player from being dam-
aged during shipment.
Before you mount the stereo, make
sure you have all the necessary mate-
rials. Then confirm that the stereo fits
your vehicle’s mounting area. This au-
tosound stereo system is a DIN-E size
unit that requires a 21/4-inch high by
Before you mount the stereo, use a
Phillips screwdriver to remove the
shipping screw from the top of the ste-
reo.
6
12-2154.fm Page 7 Wednesday, July 14, 1999 3:34 PM
Cautions:
• For added safety and to protect
your stereo, disconnect the cable
from your vehicle battery’s nega-
tive (–) terminal before you begin.
(illus)
Note: Save the shipping screw in
case you ever want to mail or ship the
stereo. You can secure it to the back
of the stereo with a piece of tape.
• Be sure your speakers can handle
64 watts of power (16 watts per
channel). Each speaker must
have an impedance of at least 4
ohms. Your local RadioShack
store carries a full line of speak-
ers.
MAKING THE
CONNECTIONS
The supplied harness with the 14-pin
connector includes all the lead wires
you need to connect the stereo to
ground, power, some optional compo-
nents, and speakers.
• You must connect the GROUND,
+12V TO IGNITION, and +12V TO
BATTERY wires first, then make
all other connections as described
in the following sections before
you plug the harness with the 14-
pin connector into the stereo. If
you do not make connections in
the order shown, damage to the
stereo is possible if any wire con-
nections are made incorrectly.
Important: Do not cut these wires. If
you cut any wire, you cannot obtain a
refund or exchange on this product.
However, your local RadioShack store
will provide warranty service if you cut
a wire and find the product is defec-
tive.
• You must connect a separate wire
to each speaker terminal as
described in the following proce-
dure. Do not use a common wire
or chassis ground for any speaker
connection.
You might need additional wire, de-
pending on your individual autosound
system, to complete the connections.
Your local RadioShack store carries a
full line of wire and wire management
accessories.
7
12-2154.fm Page 8 Wednesday, July 14, 1999 3:34 PM
Note: The wires in the wiring harness
have the following colors and labels.
Connecting Ground, Power,
and Optional Components
Follow these steps to connect the har-
ness with the 14-pin connector to
ground, primary and memory backup
power, and optional components.

vehicle’s negative ( ) battery ter-
minal.
If you are replacing an existing stereo,
or if your vehicle has been factory-
wired for autosound components, you
might be able to use an adapter har-
ness to connect the power and speak-
ers. RadioShack stores sell adapter
harnesses for most vehicles.
Follow the directions that come with
the adapter harness to temporarily
connect the ground, power, optional
components, and speakers. Then go
to “Connecting the Antenna” on
Page 11.
2. Connect the black ground wire to
a chassis ground, such as a metal
screw attached to a metal part of
the vehicle’s frame. Be sure that
the screw is not insulated from the
chassis by a plastic part.
8
12-2154.fm Page 9 Wednesday, July 14, 1999 3:34 PM
3. Connect the red power wire (with
in-line fuse holder) to a point in
your vehicle’s fuse block that has
power only when you turn the
vehicle’s key to either the acces-
sory (ACC) or START position.
This connection turns on the ste-
reo when you turn on the ignition
or turn the key to ACC, and turns
off the stereo when you turn off
the ignition. This prevents your
vehicle’s battery from being
drained if you leave the stereo on
when you turn off the ignition.
Connecting an Equalizer/
Booster
If you are connecting the stereo to a
separate equalizer or booster, you
need additional wires (not included).
To increase the total power output
from your system, connect the R
(right) and L (left) line output jacks on
the back of the stereo and blue/white
wire, if necessary, to the equalizer or
booster.
4. Connect the yellow power/mem-
ory wire to your vehicle battery’s
positive (+) terminal or to a point
in your vehicle’s fuse block that
provides a continuous source of
12 volts.
(illus)
This connection provides power
for the stereo’s components (such
as the CD player), and continuous
power for the stereo’s memory
when the ignition is turned off.
Check the equalizer/booster’s owner’s
manual for directions.
5. Connect the blue/white wire to any
optional equipment, designed to
run from a switched source, that
you want the stereo to turn on and
off (such as a booster or a power
antenna).
Connecting Two Pairs of
Speakers
If you are using both front and rear
speakers, follow these steps to con-
nect the harness with the 14-pin con-
nector to the speakers.
This wire does not provide power
to the components. It simply turns
them on or off. If you do not use
this wire, secure it with a wire tie
and do not let it touch metal.
12-2154 Only: Before connecting the
speakers, remove the tape that holds
the mounting sleeve in place and slide
the sleeve off of the stereo. Then set
2CH/4CH on the bottom of the stereo
to 4CH.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE
Your Optimus High-Power In-Dash AM/FM Stereo CD Player is an example of su-
perior design and craftsmanship. The following suggestions will help you care for
your stereo so you can enjoy it for years.
Keep the stereo dry. If it gets wet, wipe it dry immediately. Liquids
might contain minerals that can corrode the electronic circuits.
Keep the stereo away from dust and dirt, which can cause premature
wear of parts.
Handle the stereo gently and carefully. Dropping it can damage cir-
cuit boards and cases and can cause the stereo to work improperly.
Wipe the stereo with a damp cloth occasionally to keep it looking
new. Do not use harsh chemicals, cleaning solvents, or strong deter-
gents to clean the stereo.
Modifying or tampering with the stereo’s internal components can cause a malfunc-
tion, invalidating your stereo’s warranty and voiding your FCC authorization to oper-
ate it. If your stereo is not performing as it should, take it to your local RadioShack
store for assistance.
THE FCC WANTS YOU TO KNOW
Your stereo might cause TV or radio interference even when it is operating proper-
ly. To determine whether your stereo is causing the interference, turn off your ste-
reo. If the interference goes away, your stereo is causing it. Try to eliminate the
interference by:
• Moving your stereo away from the receiver
• Contacting your local RadioShack store for help
If you cannot eliminate the interference, the FCC requires that you stop using your
stereo.

CD CARE TIPS
REPLACING A FUSE
Even though a CD is very durable, you
should handle it with care. We recom-
mend the following precautions.
If the stereo does not operate, you
might need to replace the red power
wire’s 1-amp 11/4-inch fuse with the
supplied spare fuse (Cat. No. 270-
1005). If the clock resets or stored sta-
tions are lost when the ignition is off,
you might need to replace the 10-amp
blade-type fuse on the stereo’s back
panel with the supplied spare fuse
(Cat. No. 270-1081). Check both fus-
es.
• Keep the CD in its protective case
or sleeve when you are not play-
ing it.
• Handle a CD by its edges to avoid
fingerprints which can prevent the
CD player’s laser beam from
accurately reading the CD. Your
local RadioShack store sells a
suitable CD cleaner kit.
Caution: Do not use a fuse with rat-
ings other than those specified here.
Doing so might damage your stereo.
• Do not write on either side of the
CD, particularly the non-label
side. (Signals are read from the
non-label side.)
Replacing the Red Power
Wire’s Fuse
• Keep the CD dry. A water drop
can act as a lens and affect the
laser beam’s focus.
1. Disconnect the cable from your
–
vehicle’s negative ( ) battery ter-

minal.
If a CD skips when you try to play it, it
might be scratched. Your local Ra-
dioShack store sells a Scratch n Fix
kit (Cat. No. 42-127) that might help
remove the scratch and stop the skip.

2. Push together and twist the fuse
holder’s parts on the red power
wire until they spring apart. Then
remove the fuse.

inserting the fuse into the longer
of the fuse holder’s ends, and
pushing together and twisting the
two parts until they latch together.
