want their homes as airtight as possible.
BLOWER ACCESSORY
The FB32CA and NLFB32C firebox will
accept the GA3700 accessory. The variable
blower allows you to select the fan speed
you desire. The blower circulates heated air
from the firebox into the room. Use of
blower is optional.
If your home meets all of the three
criteria above, you must provide ad-
ditional fresh air. See Ventilation Air
From Outdoors, page 6.
While it is good to make your home energy
efficient, your home needs to breathe. Fresh
air must enter your home. All fuel-burning
appliances need fresh air for proper com-
bustion and ventilation.
LOCATING
FIREBOX
If your home does not meet all of the
three criteria above, proceed to Deter-
mining Fresh-Air Flow For Firebox
Location, page 5.
Exhaust fans, fireboxes, clothes dryers, and
fuel burning appliances draw air from the
house to operate. You must provide ad-
equate fresh air for these appliances. This
will insure proper venting of vented fuel-
burning appliances.
PLANNING
Plan where you will install the firebox. This
will save time and money later when you
install the firebox. Before installation, con-
sider the following:
Confined Space and Unconfined
Space
TheNationalFuelGasCode(ANSZ2123.1,
1992 Section 5.3) defines a confined space
as a space whose volume is less than 50
cubic feet per 1,000 Btu per hour (4.8 m3 per
kw) of the aggregate input rating of all
appliances installed in that space and an
unconfined space as a space whose volume

DETERMINING FRESH-AIR FLOW FOR FIREBOX LOCATION
Determining if You Have a Confined or Unconfined Space
Use this work sheet to determine if you have a confined or unconfined space.
Space: Includes the room in which you will install firebox plus any adjoining rooms with doorless passageways or ventilation grills
between the rooms.
1. Determine the volume of the space (length x width x height).
Length x Width x Height = _________ cu. ft. (volume of space)
Example: Space size22 ft. (length) x 18 ft. (width) x 8 ft. (ceiling height) = 3168 cu. ft. (volume of space)
If additional ventilation to adjoining room is supplied with grills or openings, add the volume of these rooms to the total volume of
the space.
2. Divide the space volume by 50 cubic feet to determine the maximum Btu/Hr the space can support.
__________ (volume of space) ÷ 50 cu. ft. = (Maximum Btu/Hr the space can support)
Example: 3168 cu. ft. (volume of space) ÷ 50 cu. ft. = 63.3 or 63,300 (maximum Btu/Hr the space can support)
3. Add the Btu/Hr of all fuel burning appliances in the space.

Other gas appliances* + _____________________ Btu/Hr
Total _____________________ Btu/Hr
=
* Do not include direct-vent gas appliances. Direct-vent draws combustion air from the outdoors and vents to the outdoors.
4. Compare the maximum Btu/Hr the space can support with the actual amount of Btu/Hr used.
_____________________Btu/Hr (maximum the space can support)
_____________________Btu/Hr (actual amount of Btu/Hr used)
Example: 63,300 Btu/Hr (maximum the space can support)
79,000 Btu/Hr (actual amount of Btu/Hr used)
The space in the above example is a confined space because the actual Btu/Hr used is more than the maximum Btu/Hr the space can support.
You must provide additional fresh air. Your options are as follows:
A. Rework worksheet, adding the space of an adjoining room. If the extra space provides an unconfined space, remove door to adjoining
room or add ventilation grills between rooms. See Ventilation Air from Inside Building, page 6.
B. Vent room directly to the outdoors. See Ventilation Air from Outdoors, page 6.
C. Install a lower Btu/Hr firebox, if lower Btu/Hr size makes room unconfined.
If the actual Btu/Hr used is less than the maximum Btu/Hr the space can support, the space is an unconfined space. You will need no
additional fresh air ventilation.
WARNING: If the area in which the firebox and gas log heater may be operated is smaller than that defined as
an unconfined space or if the building is of unusually tight construction, provide adequate combustion and
ventilation air by one of the methods described in the National Fuel Gas Code, ANS Z223.1, 1992, Section 5.3 or
applicable local codes.

minimize the heating of objects and materi-
als placed on the mantel.
• in a bedroom or bathroom
• in a recreational vehicle
• where curtains, furniture,
clothing, or other flammable
objectsarelessthan42inches

the firebox
Minimum Wall and Ceiling
Clearances (see Figure 6)
A. Clearances from the side of the firebox
opening to any combustible wall should
not be less than 16 inches for a cabinet
mantel or 12 inches for a corner instal-
lation.
• in high traffic areas
• in windy or drafty areas
B. Clearances from the top of the firebox
opening to the ceiling should not be less
than 42 inches.
CAUTION: Do not allow the
vent-free gas log heater to touch
or extend beyond the fireplace
screen.
CAUTION: Log heaters in-

operating firebox where impuri-
ties(suchastobaccosmoke,aro-

oil or kerosene lamps, etc.) in the
air exist, may discolor walls.
C. When the firebox is installed directly
on carpeting or other combustible ma-
terial, other than wood flooring, the
firebox should be installed on a metal
or wood panel extending the full width
and depth of the enclosure.
If your installation does not meet the mini-
mum clearances in Figure 7, page 8, you
must:
• raise the mantel to an acceptable height,
OR
• remove the mantel.
IMPORTANT: Vent-free gas log heaters
add moisture to the air. Although this is
beneficial, installingfireboxinroomswith-
out enough ventilation air may cause mil-
dew to form from too much moisture. See

IMPORTANT: Make sure the firebox is
level. If firebox is not level, log set will not
work properly.
