Use of an attachment not recommended or sold by the battery charger
manufacturer may result in a risk of fire, electric shock, or injury to per-

To reduce risk of damage to electric plug and cord, pull by plug rather than
cord when disconnecting charger.
An extension cord should not be used unless absolutely necessary. Use of
improper extension cord could result in a risk of fire and electric shock. If
an extension cord must be used, make sure:
• That pins on plug of extension cord are the same number, size, and
shape as those of plug on charger;
• That extension cord is properly wired and in good electrical condition and;
• That wire size is large enough for AC ampere rating of charger as speci-
fied in Table 8.3.

PERSONAL PRECAUTIONS

Consider having someone close enough by to come to your aid when you
work near a lead-acid battery.

Have plenty of fresh water and soap nearby in case battery acid contacts
skin, clothing, or eyes.
Wear complete eye protection and clothing protection. Avoid touching
eyes while working near battery.
If battery acid contacts skin or clothing, wash immediately with soap and
water. If acid enters eye, immediately flood eye with running cold water for
at least 10 minutes and get medical attention immediately.

NEVER smoke or allow a spark or flame in vicinity of battery or engine.
Be extra cautious to reduce risk of dropping a metal tool onto battery. It
might spark or short-circuit battery or other electrical part that may cause
explosion.

Remove personal metal items such as rings, bracelets, necklaces, and
watches when working with a lead-acid battery. A lead-acid battery can
produce a short-circuit current high enough to weld a ring or the like to
metal, causing a severe burn.
Use charger for charging a LEAD-ACID battery only. It is not intended to
supply power to a low voltage electrical system other than in a starter-mo-
tor application. Do not use battery charger for charging dry-cell batteries
that are commonly used with home appliances. These batteries may burst
and cause injury to persons and damage to property.

NEVER charge a frozen battery.

PREPARING TO CHARGE
3.1
If necessary to remove battery from vehicle to charge, always remove
grounded terminal from battery first. Make sure all accessories in the
vehicle are off, so as not to cause an arc.

Be sure area around battery is well ventilated while battery is being
charged.
Clean battery terminals. Be careful to keep corrosion from coming in con-
tact with eyes.
Add distilled water in each cell until battery acid reaches level specified by
battery manufacturer. Do not overfill. For a battery without removable cell
caps, such as valve regulated lead acid batteries, carefully follow manu-
facturer’s recharging instructions.

Study all battery manufacturer’s specific precautions while charging and
recommended rates of charge.
Determine voltage of battery by referring to vehicle owner’s manual and
make sure that output voltage selector switch is set at correct voltage. If
charger has adjustable charge rate, charge battery initially at lowest rate.

CHARGER LOCATION
Locate charger as far away from battery as DC cables permit.
Never place charger directly above battery being charged; gases from bat-
tery will corrode and damage charger.

Never allow battery acid to drip on charger when reading electrolyte spe-
cific gravity or filling battery.
Do not operate charger in a closed-in area or restrict ventilation in any
way.
Do not set a battery on top of charger.

DC CONNECTION PRECAUTIONS
5.1
Connect and disconnect DC output clips only after setting any charger
switches to “off” position and removing AC cord from electric outlet. Never
allow clips to touch each other.

Attach clips to battery and chassis, as indicated in 6.5, 6.6, and 7.2
through 7.4.

FOLLOW THESE STEPS WHEN BATTERY IS INSTALLED IN
VEHICLE.

Position AC and DC cords to reduce risk of damage by hood, door, or
moving engine part.
Stay clear of fan blades, belts, pulleys, and other parts that can cause
injury to persons.
Check polarity of battery posts. POSITIVE (POS, P, +) battery post usually
has larger diameter than NEGATIVE (NEG, N,–) post.
Determine which post of battery is grounded (connected) to the chassis.
If negative post is grounded to chassis (as in most vehicles), see (6.5). If
positive post is grounded to the chassis, see (6.6).

For negative-grounded vehicle, connect POSITIVE (RED) clip from battery
charger to POSITIVE (POS, P, +) ungrounded post of battery. Connect
NEGATIVE (BLACK) clip to vehicle chassis or engine block away from
battery. Do not connect clip to carburetor, fuel lines, or sheet-metal body
parts. Connect to a heavy gauge metal part of the frame or engine block.
For positive-grounded vehicle, connect NEGATIVE (BLACK) clip from bat-
tery charger to NEGATIVE (NEG, N, –) ungrounded post of battery. Con-
nect POSITIVE (RED) clip to vehicle chassis or engine block away from
battery. Do not connect clip to carburetor, fuel lines, or sheet-metal body
parts. Connect to a heavy gauge metal part of the frame or engine block.

When disconnecting charger, turn switches to off, disconnect AC cord,
remove clip from vehicle chassis, and then remove clip from battery termi-
nal.

FOLLOW THESE STEPS WHEN BATTERY IS OUTSIDE VEHICLE.
A SPARK NEAR THE BATTERY MAY CAUSE BATTERY EXPLOSION.
TO REDUCE RISK OF A SPARK NEAR BATTERY:

Attach at least a 24-inch-long 6-gauge (AWG) insulated battery cable to
NEGATIVE (NEG, N, –) battery post.
Connect POSITIVE (RED) charger clip to POSITIVE (POS, P, +) post of
battery.
Position yourself and free end of cable as far away from battery as pos-
sible – then connect NEGATIVE (BLACK) charger clip to free end of cable.

Do not face battery when making final connection.
When disconnecting charger, always do so in reverse sequence of con-
necting procedure and break first connection while as far away from bat-
tery as practical.
7.7
A marine (boat) battery must be removed and charged on shore. To
charge it onboard requires equipment specially designed for marine use.
8.
BATTERY CHARGING - AC CONNECTIONS
8.1
For all grounded cord-connected battery chargers:
• GROUNDING AND AC POWER CORD CONNECTION
INSTRUCTIONS – Charger should be grounded to reduce risk of electric
shock. Charger is equipped with an electric cord having an equipment-
grounding conductor and a grounding plug. The plug must be plugged
into an outlet that is properly installed and grounded in accordance with
all local codes and ordinances.
DANGER – Never alter AC cord or plug provided – if it will not fit outlet,
have proper outlet installed by a qualified electrician. Improper connec-
tion can result in a risk of an electric shock.
8.2
For grounded, cord-connected battery chargers with an input rating
less than 15 amperes and intended for use on a nominal 120-volt
circuit:
• This battery charger is for use on a nominal 120-volt circuit, and has a
grounding plug that looks like the plug illustrated in sketch A in Figure
8.8. A temporary adapter, which looks like the adapter illustrated in
sketches B and C, may be used to connect this plug to a two-pole recep-
tacle as shown in sketch B if a properly grounded outlet is not available.
The temporary adapter should be used only until a properly grounded

outlet can be installed by a qualified electrician.
DANGER – Before using adapter as illustrated, be certain that center
screw of outlet plate is grounded. The green-colored rigid ear or lug ex
tending from adapter must be connected to a properly grounded outlet–
make certain it is grounded. If necessary, replace original outlet cover
plate screw with a longer screw that will secure adapter ear or lug to
outlet cover plate and make ground connection to grounded outlet.

9.1
BATTERY SIZE
Use this button to set the charge rate to one of the following three:
• 2A SMALL or 4A MEDIUM: Intended for charging small batteries such
as those commonly used in garden tractors, snow mobiles and motorcy-
cles. The 2A rate is not intended to be used as a trickle charger for larger
batteries.
• 6A LARGE: Use for charging automotive and marine batteries. Not
intended for industrial applications.
9.2
BATTERY TYPE BUTTON
Use this button to set the type of battery to be charged to one of the fol-
lowing two:
• 12 Volt: This is the type of battery usually used in cars, trucks, and mo-
torcycles.
• 6 Volt: This is the type of battery usually used in antique and some spe-
cialized vehicles.

11. OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
11.1 OVERVIEW
To use this battery charger, first, connect the battery and AC power follow-
ing the precautions listed under sections 6 and 7. Then, select the appro-
priate BATTERY TYPE and BATTERY SIZE for your battery. This section
explains a few details.
GENERAL CHARGING NOTES: If the charger does not detect a properly
connected battery, the CONNECTED LED will not light. Charging will not
begin until the CONNECTED LED is on.
If the charge mode is changed after charging has started (by pressing the
BATTERY SIZE or BATTERY TYPE button) the charging process restarts.
11.2 AUTOMATIC SHUT OFF: When the 2A, 4A or 6A charge rate is selected,
the charger is set to perform an automatic charge. When an automatic
charge is performed, the charger will switch into Maintain Mode after the
battery is charged.
11.3 ABORTED CHARGE: If charging can’t be completed normally, charging
will abort. When charging is aborted, the charger’s output is shut off. The
CONNECTED LED will be lit and the display will read BAD BAT. In this
state, the charger ignores all buttons. To reset after an aborted charge,
disconnect the AC power cord.
11.4 COMPLETION OF CHARGING: Charge completion is indicated by the
CHARGED LED. When lit, the charger will switch to the Maintain Mode of
operation.
11.5 MAINTAIN MODE: When the CHARGED LED is lit, the charger has
started Maintain Mode. The charger will monitor the battery voltage. When
the voltage drops to a predetermined level, the charger will re-initiate a
charge cycle at the 2A rate.
12. MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS
12.1 Before performing maintenance, unplug and disconnect battery charger
(see sections 6.6 and 6.7).
12.2 After use, use a dry cloth to wipe all battery corrosion and other dirt or oil
from terminals, cords, and the charger case.
12.3 Servicing does not require opening unit, as there are no user-serviceable
parts.

13. STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS
13.1 Store charger unplugged, in an upright condition. Cord will still conduct
electricity until it is unplugged from outlet.
13.2 Store inside, in a dry, cool place (unless you’re using an on-board Marine
Charger ).
13.3 Do not store clips on handle, clipped together, on or around metal, or
clipped to cables.

years from date of purchase at retail against defective material or work-
manship. If such should occur, the unit will be repaired or replaced at the

charges prepaid to the manufacturer or its authorized representative.
This limited warranty is void if the product is misused, subjected to care-

Considere tener a alguien que lo acompañe para asistirlo cuando trabaje
cerca de una batería de plomo y ácido.

Tenga a mano mucha agua fresca y jabón en caso de que la piel, la ropa
o los ojos entren en contacto con el ácido de la batería.

Use el cargador para cargar una batería de PLOMO Y ÁCIDO, exclusi-
vamente, ya que no está diseñado para suministrar energía a un sistema
eléctrico de bajo voltaje distinto de una aplicación de motor de arranque.
No utilice el cargador de batería para cargar baterías secas, comúnmente
utilizadas en artefactos domésticos. Estas baterías podrían explotar y
ocasionar una lesión en personas y un daño en los bienes.

Si es necesario quitar la batería del vehículo para cargarla, siempre retire

entre ellos.

8.
CARGA DE BATERIA - CONEXIONES AC
8.1
Para todo tipo de cargadores de baterías con conexión a tierra.
• INSTRUCCIONES PARA LA CONEXIÓN DE CABLES DE CA Y A
TIERRA - El cargador debe estar conectado a tierra para evitar el riesgo
de una descarga eléctrica. El cargador está equipado con un cable eléc-
trico que lleva un conductor interno para la corriente a tierra, así como en
la clavija. La clavija debe estar conectada al tomacorriente, el cual debe
estar instalado apropiadamente de acuerdo con todas normas y códigos
locales.
PELIGRO-Nunca altere el cable de CA o la clavija del equipo. En caso de
que no encaje la clavija en el tomacorriente, instale uno adecuado, por un
electricista calificado. Una mal conexión puede dar como resultado una
descarga eléctrica.
8.2
Para cargadores de baterías con conexión a tierra con tipo de en-
trada de menos de 15 amperios y para ser usado en circuito nominal
de 120 voltios:
• Este cargador de baterías debe usarse en circuito nominal de 120 volt-
ios, y tiene una clavija como la ilustración A en el dibujo 8.4. Un adapta-
dor, como el ilustrado en los dibujos B y C, puede ser utilizado temporal-
mente, para conectar la clavija al receptáculo bipolar como se muestra
en el dibujo B si no existe un tomacorriente adecuado. El adaptador
temporal debe ser usado únicamente hasta que un tomacorriente a tierra
se instale permanentemente, por un electricista calificado.
PELIGRO-Antes de usa el adaptador como se ilustra, asegúrese de que
el tornillo de en medio de la placa esté conectado a tierra. La armella o
argolla rígida de color verde que sale del adaptador debe ser conectada
al tomacorriente adaptado a tierra-asegúrese de que hace tierra. Si es
necesario, reemplace el tornillo de la placa del tomacorriente por uno más

9.1
BOTÓN DE TAMAÑO DE BATERÍA (Battery Size)
Use este botón para fijar la tasa de carga en una de las tres a continu-
ación:
• TASA DE CARGA 2A o 4A (2A Small or 4A Medium): Destinada para
cargar baterías pequeñas tales como aquellas que se usan en los trac-
tores de jardines, nievemóviles, y motocicletas. La tasa de 2A no se debe
usar como cargador lento para las baterías más grandes.
• TASA DE CARGA 6A (6A Large): Se usa para cargar las baterías de au-
tomóvil y de tipo marino. No se destina para las aplicaciones industriales.
9.2
BOTÓN DE TIPO DE BATERÍA (Battery Type)
Use este conmutador para fijar el tipo de batería a ser cargada en uno de

11. INSTRUCCIONES DE OPERACIÓN
11.1 VISTA GENERAL
El modo de usar el cargador de baterías es muy sencillo. Primero,
conecte la batería y la potencia CA siguiendo las precauciones detalladas
bajo 6 & 7. Luego, seleccione el TIPO DE BATERÍA y la TASA DE CARGA
apropiados para la batería. El cargador entonces hará todo automática-
mente. Esta sección explica unos cuantos detalles.
NOTAS GENERALES RESPECTO AL PROCESO DE CARGAR: Si el
cargador no detecte una batería debidamente conectada, no se en-
ciende el DEL CONECTADO (Connected) hasta que se encuentre una
batería. El proceso de cargar no comienza hasta que se encienda el DEL
CONECTADO; cuando comienza, el DEL CARGANDO (Charging) estará
encendido.
Si al modo de cargar se le hace cambiar después de comenzar el proceso
de cargar (oprimiendo el botón de TAMAÑO DE BATERÍA o TIPO DE
BATERÍA), el proceso de cargar se comienza de nuevo.
El cargador viene equipado con un relé. Este dispositivo hace encender y
apagar la corriente de carga a la batería. Es normal oír de vez en cuando
un sonido de chasquido cuando el relé se enciende o se apaga.
11.2 CIERRE AUTOMÁTICO: Cuando se selecciona la tasa de carga 2A, 4A
o 6A, el cargador queda preparado para efectuar carga automática. Al
efectuar carga automática, el cargador deja automáticamente de cargar
después de que la batería esté cargada.
11.3 CARGA ABORTADA: Si no se puede completar la carga en forma nor-
mal, queda abortada. Al quedar la carga abortada, la salida del cargador
se cierre y los DEL se apagan, menos el DEL CONECTADO. En este
estado, el cargador hace caso omiso de todos los botones. Para reponer
el cargador después de una carga abortada, hay que desenchufarlo.
11.4 CARGA COMPLETADA: La carga completada se indica mediante el DEL
verde CARGADA (Charged); si está encendido, el cargador ha dejado de
cargar y ha cambiado al de operación Modo de Mantenimiento (Maintain
Mode).
11.5 MODO DE MANTENIMIENTO: Si el DEL (verde) CARGADA se enciende,
el cargador ha iniciado el Modo de Mantenimiento. El cargador vigila el
voltaje de la batería. Cuando el voltaje baja hasta un nivel predetermina-
do, el cargador inicia de nuevo un ciclo de cargar a la tasa de 2 amperios.
12. INSTRUCCIONES DE MANTENIMIENTO
El cargador está diseñado y construido con materiales de alta calidad que
demandan muy poco cuidado.
12.1 Luego del uso, utilice un paño seco para limpiar la corrosión de la batería
y la suciedad o aceite de los terminales, cables y la caja del cargador.
12.2 Los cables se deben enrollar cuando el cargador no se esté utilizando

para evitar dañarlos.
12.3 El personal de mantenimiento calificado debe llevar a cabo otros tipos de
mantenimiento.
12.4 El cargador extraerá una pequeña cantidad de corriente de la/s batería/s,
pocos miliamperios, cuando no esté cargando o manteniendo. Si la/s
batería/s se van a guardar durante un período largo (varios meses) sin
cargar, es mejor desconectar las pinzas para las baterías del cargador
con el fin de evitar que el cargador descargue la/s batería/s con el tiempo.
13. ALMACENAJE
13.1 Guárdese desconectado el cargador en forma vertical. El cable conduce
carga hasta que es desconectado del tomacorriente.
13.2 Guárdese en un lugar seco y recomendable (al menos que se esté
usando un cargador Marino a bordo).
13.3 No se sujeten las pinzas a la agarradera, ni las sujete una con otra, ni al
metal o a los cables.
