Placement
Place this equipment in a location that is close enough to an electrical outlet to
accommodate the length of the power cord. Place this equipment on a stable surface.
The surface must support the size and weight of this equipment.
WARNING:
Avoid personal injury and damage to this equipment. An unstable surface may
cause this equipment to fall.
Accessories
Do not use accessories with this equipment unless recommended by your cable
company.
Ventilation
This equipment has openings for ventilation that protect it from overheating. To
ensure the reliability of this equipment, do not obstruct the openings.

Power Sources
A label on this equipment indicates the correct power source for this equipment.
Operate this equipment only from an electrical outlet that has the voltage and
frequency that the label indicates.
If you are unsure of the type of power supply to your residence, consult Scientific-
Atlanta, Inc., or your local power company.
WARNING:
Avoid electric shock and fire hazard. Do not overload electrical outlets and
extension cords. For equipment that requires battery power or other sources to
operate, refer to the operating instructions for that equipment.
Grounding
This equipment has a two-prong plug. Properly ground (earth) this equipment by
inserting the plug into a grounded electrical, two-socket outlet. If this plug is polar-
ized it has one wide prong and one narrow prong. This plug fits only one way. If you
are unable to insert this plug fully into the outlet, contact an electrician to replace
your obsolete outlet.
Power Cord Protection
Arrange all power cords so that people cannot walk on the cords, place objects on
the cords, or place objects against the cords, which can damage the cords. Pay
particular attention to cords that are at plugs, at electrical outlets, and at the places
where the cords exit the equipment.
Lightning and Power Surges
Ground (earth) your cable system to provide some protection against voltage surges
and built-up static charges. If you have questions, call your cable company.
Servicing
Do not open the cover of this equipment. If you open the cover, your warranty will be
void. Refer all servicing to qualified personnel only. Contact your cable company for
instructions.

The Interactive Program Guide is a convenient way to see a list of current
and up-coming programs and quickly tune to channels. Press
display the Interactive Program Guide.

the functions and features of your EXPLORER 2000. See General Settings

Preference Description
AC Outlet Multi-feature AC power outlet for your TV:
• Always On - Must power-on your EXPLORER 2000 and
your TV separately
• On with Settop - TVpowers-on when you power-on your
EXPLORER 2000
• Always Off - AC outlet is not active
All Timers Displays a list of all timers you have set.
Audio
Level
Determines the constant sound level (does not apply if you have
set your remote control to control the volume through the
EXPLORER 2000)
Blocked
Blocks a channel from viewing. To unblock the channel, disable your
Channels blocking PIN (see below), or turn off Parental Control. You can also
displayalistofblockedchannels

Defines a four-digit Personal Identification Number, which you
can then enable and disable. The PIN allows you to block or
unblock a channel.
• Disable - To unblock all blocked channels
• Enable - To block channels
Note: You can temporarily unlock blocked channels from within

Bypasses the cable signal (see How to Use the Bypass Option
in this guide)
Clock
Options
Switches the front panel display between the time-of-day and the
current channel number

Displays a list of your favorite channels

Understanding the Icons
Icons in the channel banner and the Interactive Program Guide provide
information about the channel you are watching.

Blocked channel
Unblocked channel
Closed captioned - channel has text subtitles for hearing-
impaired viewers. This option applies only to channels that
offer closed captioning.
Second Audio Programming - channel offers alternate
audio (such as Spanish) with the TV picture. This option
applies only to channels that offer SAP. Note: If you have
SAP enabled, and you experience no sound on some
channels, disable SAP. SAP is only available on channels
that offer it.
Channel transmits stereo sound. This option applies only to
channels that offer stereo sound.
Channel is included in your list of favorite channels
Purchased Pay-Per-View program
VCR timer is set on this channel

Understanding Ratings for Television Programs
The table below describes the rating categories and codes that are associated
with television programs in the United States.

Description
Program is appropriate for children of all ages, and
specifically designed for children ages 2 through 6 years.
Y7
Program is appropriate for children age 7 years and older.
This rating may also include the code FV, indicating the
program contains mild fantasy violence or comedy violence.
G
Program is appropriate for viewers of all ages.
PG
Parental guidance suggested. The program contains material
that parents may find unsuitable for young children.
Additional codes that may be included with the rating are:
• V - some violence
• S - some sexual situations

Parents strongly cautioned. The program contains material
that parents may find unsuitable for children under 14 years.

the following pages. Inquire with your cable company about available options.
Listening to Music
You can listen to music through your EXPLORER 2000 unit. The music is
transmitted via digital signal with quality comparable to that of a CD (compact
disc).

Using VCR Commander™

information.

How to Install the Bypass Module
The EXPLORER 2000 provides a bypass feature that allows you to view an
analog channel while recording a digital (or analog) channel on your VCR.

How to Use Bypass
When you use Bypass, the regular cable signal goes to your television, and
you can watch any regular cable channel. At the same time, the
EXPLORER 2000 sends digital cable signals to your VCR for digital channel
recording. When you disable the Bypass feature, both your VCR and TV
receive the cable signals.
1. Press
on the remote control to activate Bypass. The bypass
LED on the EXPLORER 2000 illuminates. Your VCR can now record the
channel to which the EXPLORER 2000 is tuned.
2. Press
on the remote control to de-activate Bypass, then tune your
TV to the VCR output channel (usually channel 3 or 4) in order to watch the
same channel to which the EXPLORER 2000 is tuned.

How to Install Tape and View
The Tape and View feature allows you to use two EXPLORER 2000 Digital
Home Communications Terminals, connected by an Ethernet cable, to watch
one digital cable program while recording another. You use your remote
control to control the primary (View) EXPLORER 2000. To enable this
feature, contact your cable company.

To Connect the EXPLORER® 2000
The following illustration shows the connections on the EXPLORER 2000
back panel.
WARNING:
To prevent electric shock, match wide blade of power plug to wide slot, and fully insert.
Caution:
Before you power on the EXPLORER 2000, install the AC power plug into the
EXPLORER 2000 unit first, then plug it into an electrical outlet.
Be sure the cable connection to your television and EXPLORER 2000 are
“finger tight” only. Never use a wrench to tighten these connections.

What To Do
No picture • Plug your television and EXPLORER 2000 into an electrical outlet.
• Make sure all cables are properly connected.
• Make sure the TV power is on.
• If your setup includes a VCR and/or stereo, make sure you have
properly connected them to the EXPLORER 2000.
• Make sure your TV is tuned to the proper output channel (3 or 4).
• Make sure the Bypass is disabled. See How to Bypass for more
information.
No sound
• Properly plug your television and EXPLORER 2000 into an
electrical outlet.
• Make sure all cables are properly connected.
• Make sure the TV power is on.
• If your setup includes a VCR and/or stereo, make sure you have
properly connected them to the EXPLORER 2000.
• Make sure your TV is tuned to the proper output channel (3 or 4).
• Make sure the volume is turned up.
• Make sure the Bypass is disabled. See How to Bypass for more
information.
• Make sure all cables are properly connected.
• Adjust the TV to channel 3 or 4.

• Make sure the current TV program is broadcast in color.

How to Replace the Remote Control Batteries
Your remote control requires two AA alkaline batteries.
1. Press forward then lift up on the lever on the back cover of the remote
control. The battery cover releases, and you can pull the cover up to
remove it.

2. Remove and safely dispose of the old batteries.
Caution:
Make sure you correctly align the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals on the
batteries to the corresponding terminals in the remote control.

3. Insert and firmly seat two new AA batteries (alkaline required) into the
battery compartment.
4. Slide the front of the battery cover back onto the remote control and snap
the back of the cover into place.

How to Program the Remote Control
Introduction
The Model 8650-ER1 remote control for the EXPLORER® 2000 Digital
Home Communications Terminal is a universal remote control. You can
program it to operate your TV and your VCR using the following procedures.
How to Program for TV Operation
Make sure your TV is powered-on before you program the remote control.
1. Locate the TV setup code in the tables on the pages that follow. If your
TV is not listed, see Searching the Code Library.
2. Point the remote control away from the EXPLORER 2000, the TV,
and the VCR.
3. On your remote control, press and hold
time, until the LED on the remote blinks twice.

LED on the remote control should blink twice. If not, try another setup
code, if available.
5. Confirm by pointing the remote control toward the TV and test the Power,
Volume, and Mute functions.
Note: If you programmed the remote control to adjust the volume on your
settop box rather than the volume on the TV, test only the Power function. If
these functions do not operate from the remote control, enter the next TV
setup code in the list by repeating this procedure from step 1.

To Program for VCR Operation
You can program the EXPLORER 2000 remote control to play video tapes. If
you want the EXPLORER 2000 to manage the recording of events with your
VCR, you must use the VCR Commander™ module. Without this module, you
must manually program your VCR to record. See the VCR Commander™
User’s Guide for more information or ask your cable company.
Make sure your VCR is powered-on before you program the remote control.
1. Locate the VCR setup code in the tables on the pages that follow. If your
VCR is not listed, see Searching the Code Library.
2. Point the remote control away from the EXPLORER 2000, the TV,
and the VCR.
3. On your remote control, press and hold
until the LED on the remote blinks twice.

4. Using the remote control keypad, enter your VCR’s 3-digit setup code.
The LED on the remote control should blink twice. If not try another setup
code, if available.
5. Confirm by pointing the remote control toward the VCR and test the
Power, Play, and Stop functions. If these functions do not operate from
the remote control, enter the next VCR setup code in the list by repeating
this procedure from step 1.
Note: The slide switch must be in the VCR mode to test the remote control’s
VCR functions.
Note: The slide switch on the remote control must be in the VOD position in
order for the Record and Stop features of the VCR Commander to work
with the remote control.

To Search the Code Library
If none of the listed TV or VCR codes work, you can enter a code that
searches the library of codes. The remote control automatically selects the
proper code for your TV or VCR. Make sure your TV or VCR is powered-
on before you program the remote control.
1. Point the remote control away from your TV or VCR depending on which
one you are programming.
2. Do one of the following:
• To search for TV codes, press and hold
and
at the same
at the same
time until the LED on the remote control blinks twice,
or,
• To search for VCR codes, press and hold
and
time until the LED on the remote control blinks twice.
Note: The LED on the remote control also blinks twice when it reaches
the end of its search library.
3. Using the remote control keypad enter 991. The LED on the remote

4. Point the remote control toward your TV or VCR, and press

• If the TV or VCR turns off, go to step 6.

• If the TV or VCR remains on, repeat step 4.

To Identify Programmed Codes
If you need to know what code you programmed your TV or VCR, the
remote control indicates each number in the code based on the number of
LED blinks.
1. Point the remote control away from the EXPLORER 2000, the TV,
and the VCR.
2. Do one of the following:
• To identify the TV code, press and hold
and
at the same
time until the LED on the remote control blinks twice
or,
• To identify the VCR code, press and hold
and
at the same
time until the LED on the remote control blinks twice.
3. Using the remote control keypad enter 990. The LED on the remote
blinks twice.
4. Press 1 on the keypad, then count the LED blinks. The number of blinks
indicates the first number in the code. For example, 4 blinks indicates the
first number in the code is 4.
5. Press 2 on the keypad, then count the LED blinks. The number of blinks
indicates the second number in the code.
6. Press 3 on the keypad, then count the LED blinks. The number of blinks
indicates the third number in the code.

You can program the remote control to control the volume and mute functions
through the EXPLORER 2000, or through your TV.
1. Point the remote control away from the EXPLORER 2000, the TV,
and the VCR.
